Good luck on your channel. Crosby used to dedicate this song in concerts to a past girlfriend, Christine Hinton, who was tragically killed in an accident. Later in life, he would dedicate it to his wife Jan.
thanks for the wishes and for sharing the background story
David never gets enough credit for his amazing voice (his harmony with Nash is second to none, maybe Simon and Garfunkel ) but he has the voice of an angel ..............Peace and love
David Crosby's voice was beautiful in his youth. This song has a wonderful longing in his lyrics, and an old fashioned poetry to the word selection. In 2014 he wrote another song that has a similar feel to this, in that it has a meloncholy feel in the lyrics. You sound like you want to rock, but when you want to be serious, hear his newer song.
Its called Morning Falling. I had to play it again and again when I first heard it. I wont tell you what it is about. It would ruin the brain game of coming into the story. I recommend having the lyrics to read with it. Just in case. I have the song on my bedtime playlist. Even tho it has melancholy lyrics, from a musical soundpoint, its very relaxing, and some of his best writing. He worked with his son on that album. Which is a WHOLE story in itself.
One of favorites by them.
Stay w/record, Wooden ships,49 bye byes should satisfy your quest for more rocking tunes. This was ‘69’ when folk & rock were merging. Following the release of The Band’s first 2 albums music changed & became more acoustic after 3 years of acid laced sounds. Everyone needed to take a break and this record was the breath of fresh air that was needed.
nice, glad to hear it was original and an origin of a new sound
Very well said.
Wooden Ships
The reason why the guitar sounds so ethereal is that David Crosby is using an alternate tuning EBDGAD rather than the standard EADGBE guitar tuning. This sets up voicings and intervals that simply cannot be achieved with standard tuning. Stephen Stills was also a practitioner of alternate tunings...an example of which is his Suite: Judy Blue Eyes which is tuned EEEEBE. Some guitarists use only alternate tuning. The amazing guitar instrumentalist, Pierre Bensusan, for example, uses DADGAD exclusively. And Joni Mitchell never used standard tuning, preferring to invent new tunings...of which she invented dozens!
thanks for sharing. I don't play any instrument, but I heard the other day Scar Tissue by RHCP is also out of tune on purpose.
What is the easiest way to notice this in sound for someone like me?
Guinnevere! Such a beautiful song about a woman. Right up their with the Allman Brother's "Sweet Melissa", but with unprecedented vocal harmony. I literally learned to sing harmony by trying to sing along with such songs by CSN in the day. I was listening to them when they performed at Woodstock. Epic progressive rock, and not folk rock.
Fantastic song, like every other song on this album.
“Marrakesh Express” was more than a filler song. It was the first Top 40 hit for C,S,&N.
oh rly? well, makes sense if it's a single, since it's a catchy tune.
I love comments like this, brings so much more context into the picture
Indeed. I was very surprised back then that my favourite music, that was deemed alternative, was getting mainstream appreciation.
You're probably going to find yourself enjoying Steven Stills' work best from CSN. You seem to be craving something with a bit of an edge.
I'm enjoying your journey of discovery. Keep 'em coming -
Thank you for stopping by. I am glad you find the content appealing
I like your reaction , whether or not you like it or not..can't like em all. thanks for checking album out..👍
glad you understand the honesty. my goal is to interact with the audience so you guys lead me in a direction that I will possibly like more. and folk music from end of 60s is a completley new genre for me
This song I didn't like fir the longest time, then I liked the format (if one calls it that).
I don't think there are drums on this. I recall reading something to the effect that Stills, who was performing the majority of the other instruments (but not here) - and "calling the shots" on a lot of the musical decisions - wanted Dallas Taylor's drums to be very low in the mix, so your early perception about them is correct.
Listen to Thier song Dark Star
will do, thanks
