    I worked on this movie! I could tell you at least 10 things that you don't know. Rachel was pregnant during the shooting of the movie for one. Do you know why it takes place at night? The script was written for the day. The head of MGM marketing took the movie and made it unwatchable. The real editor fixed the movie afterwards though but there was no time left to find the movie. MGM rushed to finish and then demanded a PG13 rating on a movie that was shot as an R rated movie. It was never going to be a Great movie, but it a lot more potential than we were allowed to do. I was the assistant editor. I also had to work with marketing which was not at all fun. The movie was shot and edited on film except when marketing was cutting on an Avid.

      If you don't mind, i'd like to ask you something about the troubled editing and re-editing of Tank Girl. I am a fan of the film, and ever since i first saw it, i've been looking into any info about "an hour of deleted footage" which Rachel Talalay was always talking about. Correct me if i'm wrong, but that would mean that movie was originally about 165 minutes long? Damn! Anyway, if you look up the IMDb Trivia for Tank Girl, they do have pretty good list of some deleted scenes which i know were filmed but deleted, just based on stills and clips i've seen of those which showed up over the years.
      I've seen one very old workprint copy of the film which was sourced from VHS, but it only had few extended scenes, however for some reason the voice of Sub-Girl (Ann Cusack) is strangely dubbed and it sounds much deeper. Apparently at least one more workprint version was in circulation because if you search for deleted scenes from the film, you can find several scenes which were lifted from that copy and uploaded right here on UA-cam, like original opening and ending.
      Here is the weird thing. Another deleted scene from that workprint which was released shows Tank Girl and Booga in the bed after they had sex and when T-Saint finds them. What i'd like to know is, and of course, if you even know about any of this in first place, was there an actual sex scene filmed and were there any versions of the film, maybe some which were shown at test screenings, with that scene included? Of course, as Minty said in video, Talalay and Lori Petty always said how it was filmed, and Petty even has behind the scenes pictures of the infamous "anatomically correct" Booga.

      @@jackcraven2266 I'm not sure about an hour of footage. There were definitely scenes lifted out. Maybe an hour in total of lifted scenes plus a bunch of little pieces. I have a cut form January 1995 that might include some of these scenes. I'll have to take a look at it. The famous sex scene was in the movie for a time. It was one of the scenes lifted out to achieve a PG13 rating. I really remember the sex scene as an "after sex" scene and I don't at all remember a member, I would have taken film clip like I did with the naked women.
      There was never more than one work print floating around. This movie was cut on film for the most part. The same pieces of film get recut for each change and that gets screened.and videotaped. It's the videotapes that must be floating around. I'll look and see what notes I still have, and one line continuity sheets, whatever. Scripts were hard copies back then, so I no longer have that, but I'll get back to you.

When MGM/UA approached Sound Garden about using their cover of Devo's Girl You Want, Sound Garden wanted too much money to license it. I worked some days on ''Tank Girl'' in the Grip or Electric departments. The tank was a Stuart M5 WWII surplus light tank, with a goofy turret. I had to ride on the rear deck holding a small lamp so it wouldn't fall off in one shot. The exhaust was hot and unpleasant. That same location, [then - Anaconda/Cypress pit mine at Sahuarita, AZ] was later used for another Post Apocalyptic box office bomb, Kevin Costner's ''The Postman,'' ]1997], We jokingly referred to that project as ''Dirt World.'' But at least Mr Costner's paychecks were good. I recall payroll issues with Tank Girl.
    The Titan missile silo you refer to belongs to the Pima Air and Space Museum, and is also close to the Sahuarita mine. Paramount was successful in using the silo and Titan missile as Zephram Cochrane's primitive warp drive spacecraft in ''Star Trek: First Contact,'' [1996]. I rigged the Silo, worked some days on Production, and de-rigged the silo. One day when rigging, I was wearing a black T-shirt and woodland camo trousers. The next day, I was told to take my tools and get off the lot. I'd be paid for the day. WTF? Turns out the Russians were still monitoring the missile site via satellite -- and the way I was dressed -- I was mistaken for an Airman, re-rigging the silo for a future strike.
    Russkies have no sense of humor, no imagination, no appreciation for the cinematic arts, and no understanding of military surplus as civilian wear. All Red Army surplus is sold to 3rd World dictatorships to dress their soldiers.

    • @havareriksen1004
      @havareriksen1004 2 роки тому

      So you were the culprit that prevented the missile silo being a filming location? Russian satellites must have had very good image resolution, then. As for the tank. One would think a M5 Stuart would be available locally, instead of buying one in Peru and having the shipping costs to get to Arizona.

    • @HootOwl513
      @HootOwl513 2 роки тому +2

      @@havareriksen1004 Your timeline is all off. ''Tank Girl'' shot in '94. They [the production people] probably did not make a favorable impression on the Air and Space Museum staff, who are kind of straight.They were rejected. They never got near the Silo.
      The next year Paramount Pictures [with a big budget] asked the Museum Staff to actually even use the Rocket itself, with a plastic/fibergras cockpit module overlay to be filmed as Zephram Cochrane's Warp Speed spacecraft. Money talks so Paramount got the OK.
      I don't know if the concrete slab disc, that's supposed to be permanently half-on-half-off the silo was moved to fully open -- at the request of the Director of Photography maybe -- or if it never moved. If so that would have freaked a Soviet-era observer.
      But the image of a technician in army surplus camo trousers, combat boots, black T-shirt going to his truck. A '68 Chevy C/10 in Orange might've looked like an Airman/Missleman going to a military vehicle to a Russian. The USAF stopped using that vintage GM truck decades before, and were using Dodge Crew Cab trucks and in Air Force Blue. An American observer would know that, a Russian might not pick up on the nuances.
      Only I was asked to leave. The film operation continued. Because I'm in the Union I was back the next week with the production crew when Jonathan Frakes was directing. We heard no more ''Technicians preparing for launch.'' Even though were were creating that exact effect on film. Go figure.
      As for the Peruvian* sourcing of an M5 tank for a shoot in Tucson, I'm at a loss.
      I knew of a local guy who owned a drive-thru liquor store in the SW block of Ft Lowell and Stone who was an avid military vehicle collector. He had several Deuce-and-a-Half army trucks, some light tanks, Half tracks, Jeeps, Dodge command cars. Some foreign rigs, too, Unimogs, etc. They were in a fenced in compound adjacent to the store. After buying your package of cold beer, you could not help notice all the Materiel as you turned a left circle around the tiny concrete block structure and rolled back onto Stone Av. He lived to rent his gear to movies. But he got no deal with the Tank Girl outfit.
      *Maybe there was some ulterior motive to bring a tank [with a lot of small concealable openings] from a place like Peru, where a certain botanical -- then in high esteem by the film community elite -- could also be sourced. Just a thought...

    I sometimes rewatch this film just because it's one of my faves, and I used to collect the comics back in the very early 90's. Often when I rewatch, it is to show the film to somebody else who had never seen it before, and too often they ask how does the tank listen to her commands like a pet... That was when I noticed that they left that one tiny detail out of the film. In the intro story issue of the comic, when Water and Power killed her pet water buffalo, she transferred his brain into the tank. That is why the tank acts like her pet. Watching very carefully during the animated sequence of building the tank, I think a shot from that comic issue can be barely seen for just a second, showing her holding the brain, wired into a part to be put into the tank.

    The Titan Missile silo in Tucson, Arizona (technically Green Valley, just south of Tucson) you spoke of was, however, used in Star Trek: First Contact. The actual ICBM missile in the silo was the Phoenix in the movie.

    I LOVE this movie! 😍🤩😝😘 Especially the musical number! HAHA Also, I'm surprised the animation had to be added due to production forgetting to film them... they were great and I thought it was part of the GRAND DESIGN to include an homage to the source material comics. 😖

    I LOVE Tank Girl the Movie. Would love to have seen it before the studio got their hands on it (Director's Cut ???) but what we got was the perfect level of quirk to fire my imagination. Lori Petty's performance made it all work.
    Mad Max for stoners. (with a Kick Ass OST to boot!)
    Thank Minty, this "10 things you didn't know" was unexpected and VERY welcome!.

    Lori Petty also appeared alongside Pauly Shore and David Alan Grier in In The Army Now, around that time. I love Tank Girl when I was a teenager; this many years later, I'd be interested to see a director's cut.

    Truly one of my all time favorite films outside of PCU. I had two older sisters growing up, one of them who was really into "alternative" comics so when they sat me down to watch this I had no idea what I was getting into, and looking back on it I am so glad because even though this is a loose adaptation for me at the time it pushed so many creative boundaries I thought I was maybe at least partly aware of, and totally flipped them around.

    I didn't hear anything about this movie when it came out, but my older brother showed it to me shortly after and it instantly became my favorite movie. When I was old enough to get a job, I spent weeks searching for it, and eventually it was the first DVD I ever owned.
    When I was about 15, I went to a punk concert at a tiny record store. The place had a separate room specifically dedicated to Tank Girl. I was amazed, as I didn't know the movie was based on a comic book. I almost missed the show, because I didn't want to leave the room.
    Fun fact: The band "Gorillaz" is a collaboration between one of the creators of Tank Girl and one of the members of Blur.

    I saw the movie, found out it was based on a comic series and then read all the books. I love em both even if the creators hated the movie. Lori was a _perfect_ Tank Girl.
    And the soundtrack was epic! Especially because one of my favorite bands (Face to Face) wasn't only on it, but one of my favorite songs by them was used for a bigger action scene in the movie.
