Keitel should have won an Academy Award for his role in this film.
Only problem is if he did that year, Al Pacino would never have an Oscar in his life.
"The Scent Of A Woman", wasn't that released roughly around the same time?
Yep he should've
agreed, he's a treasure as an actor
Word man.
What I love about this movie is that it can be taken two ways. Either he is just a terrible person bottoming out, or it is a Catholic parable like the Good Samaritan or the Prodigal Son. He's the Bad Lieutenant who shows mercy after a life of constant sin, which costs him his life. He knew this act of redemption would have terrible consequences, but it saved his soul.
Yeah it’s weird that with the 30 thousand drug money and the 50 grand reward he could have got himself out of that hole but he didn’t
As someone who is in their own personal hell, this is one of the most powerful scenes in any film I've seen.
Keep strong
I'm right there with you bud.
One of the most underrated actors ever imo. This scene is so powerful. I'm not sure if any other actor could've pulled this off.
I ALWAYS say Harvey Keitel is one of the greatest actors who ever lived and whenever people question me I always go “just watch Bad Lieutenant”
Originally this role was written for Christopher Walken, but he turned it down in the end.
Only Keitel could have pulled this off, with this intensity, most actors would fuck it up and you'd end up laughing.
jaye see and de niro
Sorry, but i laughed
But only at „you fuck, you rat fuck“
@@TT-mx5ll You're right, I've found this scene hilarious and heartbreaking.
Have you ever experienced Delirium Tremens? ;. (
I read an interview with how he explained this movie to his kids. Because in real life he’s a good man, a good dad, a Marine. He said he told his kids that his character is a man who lives without God. That touched me.
in all honesty i think that’s a rlly manipulative and cruel thing to say to ur kids, ‘if u don’t believe in god (which u can’t help btw u can grow up as christian as u want and ur mind just might not let u believe in it) then you’ll grow up to be an angry, alcoholic junkie with no hope left. basically if u don’t believe in god you’ll turn out like him. i think that’s horrible
@@laurengillespie4303 I think it comes from a good and honest place, but yeah, the effect of talk like that is not great
@@laurengillespie4303 I have two kids, the younger one is a strong Christian, the older one is an agnostic. I accept both of their belief systems; they both have strong moral compasses. When my older boy was about 14 we were talking, and I asked him if he believed in God. He looked a little scared when he said, “no, I believe in science.”. I told him it was his personal decision. We raised both in the Methodist church through confirmation, then it was their decision. It was a good community to grow up in.
@@laurengillespie4303 As an atheist you are not necessarily going to end up a lost, tortured soul; but you do however run the risk of posting le reddit brainiac comments all over the internet and inserting your enlightened atheism into literally every conversation like you just did. What if he said 'higher purpose' instead of God, or even 'purpose' at all? Would it have been alright if he said this was a man who thought life was completely purposeless and meaningless?
@@laurengillespie4303Why would a parent who believes in God LIE to their child?
Harvey keitel's portrayal of a lost tortured soul is incredible in this scene and throughout the movie and that's why he's one of my favourite actors of all time.
And now he's making annoying and shit car insurance adverts on British TV! Gotta make money, I guess.
Don't we all gotta somehow!
I think the movie is very overrated but there are a few scenes this being the most this being the best example that are excellent this is the best scene in the movie I like when he wakes up and they show Strawberry hitting that home run but the team is still down by like 11 runs and like when he gets shot at the end but yes this is the best scene by far
seems like everyone has reached this point at some point in life
pontiacGXPfan • Very true.
Or will, sadly
True that my friend!
Amen
I’m at this point right now. I hate my job, I don’t have kids, wife, gf, but I’ve severe coke addiction. In deep fucking depression. I guess it’s not that bad since I have job and can afford coke addiction
If I could give an award to best depiction of major depression ever, this would win.
Still haven't found what

@@user-wo5tc9ux7u Is the answer 🎵" What I'm looking for?" 🎵 😂😂😂
ten oscars only for this scene for me. this is top of the cinema history.
*Harvey Keitel went through a bad break up prior to making this movie, it all made sense when i found that out.*
*Director Abel Ferrara said that he put all of that pain into this performance.*
So it was hardly even acting
it was just gay
Walken was thought for this part at first
Lorraine Bracco was leaving him for Edward James Olmos at the time, after a 12 year relationship and a daughter together (which led to ugly custody battles).
@@InfotainmentScan That'll do it
This is the greatest portrayal of a man on the edge through his vices, such as alcohol, drugs and especially gambling ever produced on film history! I've had all 3 vices before myself so that feeling he has, of being constantly on the brink of a breakdown while hating yourself and what you've become, it's as if you've lost your soul...... Harvey should of got academy award for this ! ......I shit you not !
i 100 percent agree. this film is a masterpiece
Rock meet bottom.
This scene never gets old. Amazing acting. Painful to watch.
There were many, many great films from the 1990’s. This was definitely one of them.
Harvey Keitel is a national treasure.
I have hurt people around me..lost people around me..many mistakes..many years away contemplating it all...I have done what he portraits and I appreciate the acting
You will not find a better actor or actress! One of the absolute legendary actors, I don't know how they do it, they must actually live the role
+Matt Cullum It usually works like that.
It's called Method acting.
method acting is bullshit in my opinion. you shouldn't have to "live" like a bad lieutenant before filming begins. either you have the talent to 'turn it on' when the director yell 'action' or you don't. I don't know if HK is a method actor or not but he's damn sure talented.
@@WELCOME2PATSPLACE he knows what it’s like to be angry at God , and to how to relax let his defenses down on abut movie set and focus. I’m sure he wasn’t going around asking production assistants to suck his cockthere’s a big difference between this scene and say a soap opera, where people cry in every episode. It’s truth, that’s what method acting, Brando, Stellla Adler,, Deniro brought. No performing. Real pain wind complexity.
@@WELCOME2PATSPLACESo why are some of the best actors of modern times, been method actors? (Jack Nicholson, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro etc.)
Absolutely brilliant scene. Always shakes me to the core.
Truly one of american cinemas best scenes in the last 30 years. Every time I watch this movie i like it more and more
Unfortunately, there are not a lot of movies close to being half as close to this good.
Rose Keyes very true
He kept his morals......in a way.......he struggled....he really "understood" his role as an addicct....and the full scope of spiritual debauchery......he thought his soul was destroyed.....and his only out....was solving this case.....he thought it would redeem him....for his sins.......and possibly" save his soul somewhat....in process..."BRAVO"!!!!!
I haven't seen this film yet but I've been there, felt that crushing separation from God, asked that same question, "Where were you?" , felt that agony.
I think I will have to see this film.
Amazing movie. And amazing performance from Harvey Keitel. To the younger kids/guys, don't just settle with the newer versions of movies. But look up the originals. Don't be afraid if it lack CGI, and lave longer scenes instead of short cuts.... ;-)
Screw CGI, like who needs it, eh?
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner
Darn it ! I have been there before ! Such great acting you forget it's only a film . Harvey Keitel ....amazing actor !
Quite an exceptional performance he gave in this scene !
Addressing Jesus: "You rat fuck"
Possibly the greatest line ever in a film.
If it was said about Gods of other religions, then there would have been riots especially if same was said about Muhammed or Hindu Gods for that matter. Possibly a lawsuit. Art is good but abusing sacred figures in the name of art is sheer BS.
@@anthonygibson3861 yeah? So fuck.
@@anthonygibson3861 You misunderstood the point of this scene. Keitel's character is at the pit of despair and is crying out to God for help. Anger at God is a form of prayer and this scene shows it. Don't be so quick to jump to conclusions
Brings a Tear to even the Toughest Guy Period..So Sad.. I'm Sorry. "Incredible acting !!
rock bottom... and once ur there, u find out all the secrets about life...
yeah, people always find their faith when they run out of friends and alibis
Not really. Or else you wouldn't end up back there. So a big pfffft you stupid ass fucking comment. Some things are revealed to you but you don't really seem to learn them
@Mrs.Nickadeemus EXACTLY
All I found was more fuckin questions
billbo jackson funny how that goes but it’s true
always liked Harvey kietel what a amazing piece of acting this was
You'll need to take a shower after watching this movie. Depraved. Love it. Happy birthday, Harvey.
Jon Voight and Harvy Keitel are just as good and talented as highly celebrated actors such as Robert Deniro and Alpacino, they are some underrated geezers indeed.
Is this when Mr White finds out Mr Orange is a cop?
Awesome!😂😂😂😂
Wow ! Blown away by Harvey's performance 😮 Amazing and very emotional the way he expressed sorrow, anger and apology all at the same time, best, by not knowing how to. Haven't seen the whole film but i can say that this is truly his best performance I've seen by far 👌🏻
When I turn 40 I am going to my nearest Catholic Church dressed in a cheap suit, packing a .38 spc and replay from memory.
I'm getting you a high boy...hold on! 😆
I am 40
@@thesolarengineerMake sure it's cold 😂😂😂
This was actually a true emotional release by Harvey. He had alot of personal issues at the time and he dug deep into the center of his soul and what we see in this scene is the actualization of his pain.
As a alcoholic, I was in this EXACT situation, I got in with some really bad people, did alot of awful things for money or otherwise. My life was violence, drugs...the worst. I used to think God wasn't listening anymore, or he forgot about me and my siblings because of how we suffered at the hands of our own blood. I begged exactly how this character did, and raged when I asked " where were you?" ..until I faced the man that hurt me, hurt us. I won. He's there as much as the air you're breathing.
Now Dat's What Cha Call A Sobering Moment😎
Yep. that'll do it..
I just read that Christopher Walken was the original Bad Lt., but he backed out just 3 weeks before they started shooting!!! Makes what Mr.Keitel brought to the movie even more amazing.
Also read that the script was only 65 pages long which left plenty of room for improvising.
One of the best movies of all time, and easily top 10 performances put on camera.
His crying is so heartbreaking its like he's dry heaving what little emotion he has left out. Its also hilarious out of context ahahaha
Has Harvey always been in his 40's...
Haha
Watch mean streets
Watch Taxi driver.
How odd.. was just thinking the same thing!
He was a marine so he already old as hell
Greatest scene in cinema history.
this is a true actor. although he always tries to get his bare ass in every movie, Harvey always gives it his all, always BECOMES the character. True method acting. I would be surprised if he wasn't actually shooting something during the drug scenes.
Great acting
This was a great scene from a great film. Not sure if it's possible to get original version anymore
Thanks for pointing that out.
Gives me goosebumps every time.
The best thing about his performance is just how much of a fucking baby he becomes in these moments. Like he’s REALLY breaking down
The Keitel mating call.
He's responding to the Mad Drummer Lady from the Japanese cover version of Back In Black, lol!!!
His best performance, which says a lot. Phenomenal actor.
People who knock Cage simply haven't seen Leaving Las Vegas. It's one of the greatest leading actor performances of all time. It's intense, depraved, heart breaking, emotional, true....everything.
With that said, I came on here to talk about this performance (Keitel) and it's also one of the greatest performances of all time.
I love the "ugly crying" in movies. When emotions spill out uncontrolably it rarely looks pretty. And this wailing feels natural yet terrifying.
how do u write it down? the ugly crying thing, how does it goes?
Even though I'm an out and out athiest, this scene still manages to shake me down to my core.
I'm a dianetics man myself.
@Pook W00t depends where you live. most christians are normal. i think it's gotten past the point of "BELIEVE IN JESUS OR YOU'RE GOING TO HELL" the only comments i see like that are online. i lived in the deep south and nobody said shit to me. depends. plus i'd rather have a christian telling me about jesus than a muslim preaching about allah but that's just me.

I love everything about this scene. Genius acting!
Best scene his when he is in the club,
laughing his ass off at being told his life is in danger.
That is my favourite movie scene ever.
Just put $120 000 on tomorrow's game.
This scene. One of the best performances in the history of cinematography imho.
Fred Norris from Howard Stern has used these crying soundbites whenever somebody complains.. haha
Mister Sarajevo I used to think it was a clip from a gay porno, lol.
they are kinda funny
It's funny because Fred used to look like Keitel in the 90s
I’ve felt that squeeling crying before, when you’re just at rock bottom. Maybe because I’ve watched the movie. But I find it extremely realistic in really broken individuals.
Wow. What a scene?!?! Harvey Keitel is....oh his performance is just heartbreaking! He's such a fine actor...
I love him,brilliant ❤️ actor
When you watch the complete movie this Scene gets you, burned in my brain forever, thanks harvey
Keitel really pulls off the performance of a man who knows his soul is damned.
I saw this movie when I woke up. At like 2am on IFC
I was blown away by his performance
Love this guy, great job, superb acting.
A powerful scene!
One of Keitel´s greatest moments...
Omg, I cant believe I've never seen this. My dad always told me how good it was but I just never got around to it. One of the best acted scenes I've ever watched.
Keitel for this performance and Denzel Washington for Malcolm X Should have tied for best actor of 1992.
The Grand Inquisitor by Fyodor Dostoevsky
What great actor to do a scene like that
Epic performance!
The best movie ever produced. you won't find better acting in any other film, no way
in fact, the church scene was totally improvised, keitel wanted to make a truly repentance with god cause, as you know, he wad a drug addict and in the movie, he took real drugs . But he wanted to stop and make repentance to god so this scene is very powerful because of this too. He stop taking drugs forever after this movie so its a good ending finally ; )
No shit...Wow if thats all true not that I doubt it. Wow...dudes on a upper upper echelon
This scene and Bryan Cranston s scene in the crawlspace in Breaking Bad, are the most accurate representation of a breakdown I've ever seen
This is the same noise he makes at the end of Reservoir Dogs.
he makes that disturbing agonized groaning sound in City Of Industry too when he's playing solitaire in his hotel room and pounds his fist on the table and flips it over because he's so upset that his little brother (Timothy Hutton) got killed.
this movie was great . boy was he in deep real deep
1:09 Me, when I saw my wife just spent $350 on Advocare products.
Shit, that's my whole paycheck!!
So sad, greatest acting ever period!!

Abel Ferrara walked so the Safdie brothers could run…
The first time I saw this scene I had to leave the room & compose myself before I could continue. Amazing movie.
at 1:07 he is doing sense memory, creating a stimilus that will make him break down. This is one of the main tools of the Method, taht keitel studiet at the actors studio. Funny that they did not cut it out, but somehow at actually works in the scene even though is him using his acting technique. Sense memory is the most powerfull acting tool, takes lots of training to learn..
90s last great decade for movies
Goosebumps, every time i watch this.
Best scene I have ever scene. 54 g views? Should be 54 million!
a thousand acting awards for this man
I'm brought into tears everytime I watch this scene
Greatest scene ever.
This scene tears me up every time
"cut! Now do that scene again Ferrara" lol
Harvey Keitel is the perfect role for this movie..however if he was not available I would have called up Christopher Walken.
Strange you should mention that as rumour has it that the role was originally written for Christopher Walken but he said he wasn't suitable for it.
Harvey Kietel read the script once and didn't like it, but I think was encouraged by his acting coach to read it again. The rest they say is history.
Check out the comfort of strangers for walkens amazing acting.!!
It's the most unusial but vital pray i've ever seen. And Keitel...god, i've seen a lot of good acting but this... outstandin.
Last temptation of Christ, reservoir dogs and this make a great trilogy.
also clockers. his character in clockers almost seems like a prequel to bad lieutenant
1:25 was the part that cracks me up the most in this movie.
I know the way he crys my mom and I laughed when I just showed her that part of him crying like that I said that she does that sound when something upsets her.
