    What I love about this movie is that it can be taken two ways. Either he is just a terrible person bottoming out, or it is a Catholic parable like the Good Samaritan or the Prodigal Son. He's the Bad Lieutenant who shows mercy after a life of constant sin, which costs him his life. He knew this act of redemption would have terrible consequences, but it saved his soul.

    I’ve felt that squeeling crying before, when you’re just at rock bottom. Maybe because I’ve watched the movie. But I find it extremely realistic in really broken individuals.

    in fact, the church scene was totally improvised, keitel wanted to make a truly repentance with god cause, as you know, he wad a drug addict and in the movie, he took real drugs . But he wanted to stop and make repentance to god so this scene is very powerful because of this too. He stop taking drugs forever after this movie so its a good ending finally ; )

    at 1:07 he is doing sense memory, creating a stimilus that will make him break down. This is one of the main tools of the Method, taht keitel studiet at the actors studio. Funny that they did not cut it out, but somehow at actually works in the scene even though is him using his acting technique. Sense memory is the most powerfull acting tool, takes lots of training to learn..

    Harvey Keitel is the perfect role for this movie..however if he was not available I would have called up Christopher Walken.

    • @philiprobinson256
      @philiprobinson256 7 років тому +6

      Strange you should mention that as rumour has it that the role was originally written for Christopher Walken but he said he wasn't suitable for it.
      Harvey Kietel read the script once and didn't like it, but I think was encouraged by his acting coach to read it again. The rest they say is history.
