Soledad O'Brien on Her Mixed-Race Heritage

- Growing up, journalist Soledad O'Brien's mother used to tell her, "Don't let anybody ever tell you you're not black, and don't let anybody tell you you're not Latina." She tells WNYC Radio's Rebecca Carroll why it took her nearly four decades to understand what that meant.

Her mother is Afro-Cuban and her father is from Australia of Irish and Scottish heritage. She had all the privileges of life, growing up in a white neighborhood and even her husband is white. I think if her mother wanted to ensure that their culture was represented she should have insisted that Soledad speak in Spanish and learn it fluently. It seems like that there was a conscious effort to assimilate to white culture because there are more fringe benefits.
I don't know. I am a black woman of caramel complexion with Cherokee heritage in my family but I don't get the "benefit" of choosing white privilege. People like Nicole Richie like to quasi-identify with being "black" when they are trying to look cool or exotic. However professionally, they benefit from the cultural preferences of what whiteness offers.
Soledad O'Brien's husband Brad Raymond is a white banker, they have 4 children. Only 2 of them look like they aren't white. If the kids marry and have children by white people, at that point would they just be considered white?

@@ihaveavintageheart Nicole Richie is mixed-race. Neither of her biological parents are white. Her mother biological mother is biracial (½ AA/½ white) and her biological father is Pete Escovedo who is of half Mexican American and half Louisiana Creole descent.

I mean this is the most respectful non-condescending way, Soledad’s mom was Afro-Cuban and I believe her mom was trying to protect her of what she thought her daughter would be viewed as, but her mom must have not realized that in America her daughter would be viewed as a Latina. I’m a black man but when I see Soledad, I don’t see a black woman or a black person, even culturally, I don’t see black cultural influences in her, other than her wanting to shed light on inequity’s that blacks face, which I do think is commendable. Soledad is not viewed as a black person, not even in corporate America or by white people, but I think she knows that.

A drop of black blood doesn't make you black either. Sorry. It's up to the individual on how they want to be identified. If you want to consider yourself bi racial, then you are. Consider yourself Black? then you are. With all couples being racially diverse and having racially diverse children, this one drop rule is DUMB.

Soledad, doesn't necessarily, look white, and you can clearly, see she does, have some Afro, in her. I went to a predominantly, white elementary school and white people don't have Frizzy hair, big lips, wide nose, and dark eyes.
Her kids, 2 look like their white father the other 2 have obvious African blood, so beautiful.

Solidad is cool. I had a friend from Brazil who was almost ebony named Solidad. She was very dark but did not have African features. Everyone tries to pretend there is only one black, Africans and that anyone who is not African is white. That's beyond insane. Especially to a mixed person myself that is mostly white. So many colors and combos out there people.
PoGirl You mean Sub-Saharan African. North Africa countrues are whites (Egypt, Tunisia ..etc). Horn of Africa region (Somalia & Ethopia) don't have the same features as West & sub-saharan Africans. Bottom line is, Africa is to big for some to claim they are tje only one from it.

Tracy Thomas since antiquity the horn of Africa has had contact and exchanges with Arabs, same reason North Africa looks more Middle Eastern and European too, or why Arabia looks more African than the rest of the middle east or why Southern Spain and Italy look more Middle Eastern and African than the rest of Europe.
