Roland Martin makes this argument on his channel. Ownership of the news influences what stories are covered and how they are covered. Unequal funding means unequal power, and perpetuates inequality. If you make diversity enough of a priority, then change can happen more easily. Wouldn't it be nice if code switching wasn't as necessary?
A very timely a very good and timely conversation, but I wish they would have discussed what is going on in FL, TX, & other states with the attacks on DEI by state and local governments.
I'm a white guy and I want to see more diversity in the media, in film and just in general. I would like to see inclusion of all Americans. I greatly dislike the idea of white Christians being the identity of what is America as represented in some political circles. Our nation needs to be more accepting of all of us.
The moment religion becomes political, it transforms into a political party with an ideology. No way around it, because the spirituality is subverted by the naked pursuit of power. Like in Iran, like in India today, Saudi Arabia, its all the same. It's all about control and power. And it's NEVER democratic.
@@Mathew-8896: That’s just Net Worth, which is NOT what Soledad O’Brien is talking about here. She’s discussing the disparities in the television ownership market between people of color and non people of color. “Ownership is about equity and economic freedom” is the theme here. Networks, NOT net worth. My comment was referring to the idea that people should be financially equal. Which is the usual understanding of financial equality. When people want to use the definition you gave, they usually just say “net worth.” (Unless you’re in a board meeting at a financial institution or something).

For 33 years I ran a fine dining company named Sammy’s. George Forbes was the president of city council. He told me for the City of Cleveland’s support he asked that 50% of our employees be people of color. I met with Mr. Forbes for many years documenting Sammy’s diversity. Sammy’s only lasted 33 years, but it is proof that diversity works!
Instead of constantly pushing the color issue with diversity and inclusion, try merit and qualifications. Otherwise, we will never cooperate as a nation.
That's true but there are many people of various ethnicities who are not given the chance. Usually getting a good job means having the connections to get you the interview with the right person. Believe me, when the formal interview and application process comes around, the job already has a name.

@marseillesvieux2987 I'm talking about how those who are already established themselves within a system have the money name recognition and capabilities to do things that those who are new do not. Not oppression.

Good to see people with public visibility speaking out in support of equity.
Equity is abstract or arbitrary.
It means different things to different people.
The concept of equity seems pretty straightforward to me. All others are free to grab a dictionary.
Two of my favorite journalists ❤
😂❤
Soledad O'Brien was a former host of MSNBC's The Site
Great segment!👏🏾
Soledad is right.
She's benefitted from institutional racism aka affirmative action.
I miss Soledad!
❤ Ali and Soledad 🌞

Equity is just another word for communism.
It's Pride Month, so shouldn't MSDNC be talking about the alphabet people in their identity politics segments?
Even MSNBC doesn't touch a bud light no more.
Equality is key.
Equity is evil.
Equality UNDER THE LAW. You were promised nothing more than that. All people are NOT equal in everything. Not even close.

It is disappointing that some think "equity is evil". That mindset seems to require a complete dismissal of the past.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion is a racist cult
The White House really needs to back track this railroad across the Pacific fantasy of Biden's.😄
Equity = playing favorites based on skin color. The very definition of racism.
There’s no such thing as financial equity, Matt. That was NEVER part of the social contract. You have no right to expect such a thing.

How do you know Sammy's wouldn't have been in business longer if it wasn't diverse? Sounds more like pandering.
Happy Pride Month Everyone ❤

“Equity” is Democrat code for “I’m lazy, Gimme more Gubberment stuff”.
Start your own media company.
Out up the money and take the risk in the market.

Soledad is an affirmative action recipient.
How does it benefit from institutional discrimination?
I'd rather just hire the best candidate that works hard.
