    Because of my extreme old age I can verify Lancer published Conan before ACE. When Lancer went out of business ACE acquired the rights and reprinted them, covers and all, with a different numbering system. The first Lancer to appear was Conan the Adventurer in 1966, the final volume with any Howard stories was Conan of Cimmeria in 1969. The King Kull cover at 13:22 was painted by Roy G. Krenkel.

    Hey Larry.
    Hope you're well.
    It is I the " Cat woman of east End " guy 😂
    But I'm not here about that superb Omni.
    No...I'm a big lovecraft fan and looking into his life it turns out he was a good friend ( only through letters, they never met ) with Howard.
    So I looked into Howard and found out he wrote the original Conan series.
    With Lovecraft being the genius he was and his appreciation of Howard's writing skills I decided to buy some of Howards work!
    I bought the big hardback " The complete chronicles of Conan " and it awaits reading.
    I'm assuming you have it.
    I look forward to begining the series.
    I'll let you know what I think. 👍

    • @LarrysLibrary
      @LarrysLibrary  5 місяців тому +1

      I do not have that! Most of my Howard reading (and book purchasing) was done way back in the early 80's!. So I don't have many of the modern editions...yet.

    • @geminisundone
      @geminisundone 5 місяців тому +1

      @@LarrysLibrary It's supposed to contain all his story's so I'm sure you've read them.
      How great a writer is he? Up there with Tolkien and Lovecraft?
      And are the Conan omni's based off his story's?
      Cheers

    • @LarrysLibrary
      @LarrysLibrary  5 місяців тому +1

      @@geminisundone I think he is just under Tolkien. I am a huge fan. MOST of the stories in the Conan Omnis were adapted (or suggested at least) from Howard stories. Not all...probably 60 percent maybe? Eventually Roy Thomas ran out of Conan stories to adapt so he started adapting other Robert E Howard stories into Conan stories. That's how he came up with Red Sonja. REH"s "Red Sonya of Rogatino" wasn't in the world or era of Conan but Thomas reimagined her as a Conan contemporary. Worked rather well!

      @@LarrysLibraryHey Larry!
      Man....where do I start with this!
      I've just finished The complete chronicles of Conan by Robert E Howard and I'm gobsmacked!!
      This collection of all Howards Conan story's has simply blown me away.
      I liked them all with his longest 2 being the standouts - The black stranger and the hour of the dragon.
      And to think he wrote almost all of these in his 20's!?!
      Brilliant prose, fantastic action scenes ( way more brutal than I expected ) and utterly immersive!
      I'm shocked at how good a writer he was!
      Such a sad end to his life at 30...just imagine what else he would have gone on to write!!
      I'm a big Lovecraft fan too ( who was friends with Howard and sadly passed away of bowel cancer 6 months after Howard shot himself ) and Tolkien aswell.
      Apparently Tolkien was asked what he thought of Howards writing and he said he liked his Conan story's but thought them very violent! Lol
      When Tolkien wrote his Lord of the Rings it's a shame he couldn't have gotten Howard to write the fight/war scenes!
      Love Tolkien but for straight prose, Howard was a better writer.
      Tolkien imo got away with being a basic writer by having an incredible world, unforgettable characters and a tight plot.
      If Howard had lived another 30 years or more he would have swept Tolkien aside.
      And having read the 3 Lord of the rings novels numerous times ( obviously I love them like you ) I can honestly say during the 30's when weird tales were publishing Howards Conan work, Tolkien would have been influenced especially with the world building!
      I've just ordered Howards horror story's collection and Solomon Kane collection too. Also some of Darkhorses Conan graphic novels covering his Conan story's.
      Can't wait to dive in!
      The man could write about anything.
      What a terrible loss to literature...
      👍

      @LarrysLibrary  2 місяці тому +1

      @@geminisundone I agree.....REH would have continued and been an even greater legend! A tragic loss for fantasy for sure. I think Hour of the Dragon may be my favorite if I had to choose one REH work. Glad you are getting into his whole catalog!

    I became a fan of Howard's in the early 70's like most fans My age. Roy Thomas & Barry Smith's Comic work is why. My Junior high English teacher, Ms. Scott, saw my interest in the character & fortunately she was a fantasy fan. She loaned Me her copies of Conan & Conan of Cimmeria. She saw how much I loved them & gave Me both copies. They were the old Lancer editions. I read them until they fell apart. When Lancer went out of business, I thought they were gone forever. Thankfully, Ace put them back in print in the 80's.

    Nice collection of old Conan. I have all of those PB as well and a lot more. A lot of people now want to denigrate that deCamp series because of additions and edits but I think they dovetail into the outline of Conan s life. Some nonconan stories were adapted into Conan stories but it's just as if Howard did it himself. He did do that to some. The first Conan stories was a repurposed Kull story.
