    Thanks for the video. Following was really easy and so too was taking apart.
    People who are curious (like I was) about using it as a cheap sonos connect amp - unfortunately it doesn't work very well. The speakers in the play 1 have cables between the amp and each speaker (unlike speakers you buy in the shop). This means you either get all low + bass or high for tweeters.
    The pairing of amp with speakers is very specific. Using another speaker with correct wiring was still too basey
    Would love to know how you got USB power working!

    Hi
    Just wondering how you got on with the next stages of these Mods? I'm also interested in altering a play 1 to make a cheaper rca output sonos.

    Would it be possible to hook up new extern speaker to the play:1? that would be great to expand my old jukebox, which got no line in, but has more speakers inside.....

    One year later....any movement on this? Perhaps using a raspberry pi to convert audio to digital and broadcast onto the sonos frquency?

    Thank you for sharing this video. I can't wait to see the next part. I have been wondering about the possibility of wiring a powered sub to the speaker level out using a line level converter. What do you think?

    Thanks! Something was splashed on mine and I just can't rub it off as some dirt is stuck the tiny holes of the grill and I want to take it off to wash it. It looks so aesthetic, but not when it looks like someone spit on the grill. :)

    Hi, bad news. I just want to let you know that i'm giving up on trying to get audio line out out of the Play 1. With help of a scope and a logic analyzer i did some research on the Play 1 internals and here are the reasons why i'm not investing further on the planned hardware mod. 1) Unfortunately the I2S output of the Play 1 really is mono. The audio will only
    output to one channel of the PCM5101A DAC which makes sense here since the TPA3112 AMP is being used in MONO mode (see Datasheet). So the DSP inside the Play 1 is mapping the stereo signal to just one output channel. I tried to get the DSP to output the signal as stereo but had no luck. The only thing i got working was switching between L+R and R+L.
    I even created special audio files with sinus tones to test that. 2) The audio signal is heavily optimized for the speaker enclosure so even if you get the signal out it won't be a clear raw audio signal. 3) The DAC chip is quite small so it can be easily damaged if you try to alter any solder points. I really was afraid to turn my Play 1 into a brick but luckily it is still working. So my suggestion is to just get a Sonos Connect if you wan't to get line out. However since i can't afford a Sonos Connect right now i'm planning to do some experiments on the software side. My plan is to grab the audio stream and play it with a rapsberry. Thus i could get clean audio out. With this there is however an issue regarding audio sync.

    Since Gil hasn't responded i assume he didn't try the modifications yet. I just ordered another Sonos Play 1 and
    a DAC module (Sabre ES9023). Once i get the parts i'll definitly try this rca line-out mod. I'm also curious
    whether the Play 1 is capable of stereo-out. I'll post a video when i successfully did the mod.

      Best of luck, and please do post back, I had thought doing a PAC SNI-35 line level car audio converter off the speaker output, but was worried that sonos might be outputting different frequency ranges to the tweeter and driver and haven't been able to find anyone who has done it yet. Best solution would definitely be to tap in from the digital signal if possible.

    • @gg48gg
      @gg48gg 9 років тому

      Daniel, I doubt you'll have good quality audio with that method due to what you suspect regarding the EQ of the output. What we need is someone with experience with converting I2S output to SPDIF output. Most I2S/SPDIF boards that are currently available have a lot more functionality than we probably need and cost around $60 USD. Plus, they require a little work and know-how to (maybe) get working. Hopefully someone with a strong electronics background can help us all out. I have yet to purchase any Sonos equipment.

      Gil Harari isn't the I2S data already equalized by the Sonos controller? I don't think this will be raw audio data.

    • @gg48gg
      @gg48gg 9 років тому

      HackThatNow There may be some eq done by the processor, yes. I would think this would be user settable through the sonos interface though. I would think that the sound shaping to suit the speaker would be done q

    • @gg48gg
      @gg48gg 9 років тому

      By the amp circuit on the analog side though. I'd think that the DAC i2s input would be very good to use as a raw signal. I'm speculating though.

      I think it should work, but you will have to convert the speaker output to the line input of the sub.

      YourWizBlog Thanks for the reply. I ended up grabbing the spec sheet. My unit had the TPA3116, which said it can drive up to 50w and up to 100w in Mono mode.

    Is it possible to make line out.? I hate Bluetooth.

    • @The-Student
      @The-Student 7 років тому

      Yes it is. I've actually done it on my speaker. If you think about it, the speaker must be driven by an analog audio signal, therefore, there must be an amplifier driving the speaker(and there is). If you can disconnect whatever is driving the amplifier and connect your own signal you'd be in business. I did this and it didn't work, so I dug deeper and found a digital signal connected to the "mute" line of the amplifier was disabling the output of the amplifier so I shorted the mute line such that the amplifier is always driving whatever input signal is there. After that it was bhangra all day!

      Hi Can you do a video or how-to-guide how to this? I have simply connected a headphone plug to the speaker connectors (combining the high and low speakers) but when playing this works up to a volume level of "5%" or so and then the audio is dead untill i lower the volume again. I guess this has to do with your problem?
