We have a pipe near our living room and every time the upstairs flushes the toilet you can hear the water rushing down that pipe. 😭
Also less of a chance you’ll nail or screw into it when putting something on the wall. Ask me how I know...😬
Using a cast iron pipe on drains that are near main living areas is a genius way to reduce the sound of hearing the water flushing down the pipe.
Is this worth an extra few hundred bucks on your build? Would you ask for this?

No. In 20 years; the pvc will still be in one piece, cast iron will have holes in it. Take the same 200 and spend it on sound proofing.
This guy^^^
This is true
Agreed… hellz 2 da phuuucckkk noes…
Use schedule 40 ABS roughed in with 1” space all around with Roxal batting around and and you won’t hear…. $4!7
FACTS!!
I mean the first time the home owner goes to hand a picture they will be putting holes in the pvc anyway lol
How about insulating the pipe with spray foam or put sound proofing insulation in the walls. Cast iron is great until it’s not.
Maybe if you had a 2x6 wall or smaller drain pipe
You should use mass loaded vinyl. Same stuff you use in cars to sound deaden panels. Add spray foam too for overkill.
So my grandparents had cast iron pipe, and I have never heard a louder flush then those pipes could deliver.
Isolate your PVC off the drywall, give your subs the room they need to bury this pipe in walls as it should be. Basically plan better.
Or wrap the PVC with insulation .. does the same thing but a lot less expensive.. 😂
Well if the wall is standard 2x4 and the drain pipe is 2-3", there's not enough room for insulation lol
@@daijoubu4529honestly you don't need to put masses of soundproof insulation around it I should know
@@daijoubu4529 anyone who actually knows how to design a house the right way will never have a stack that is 3" in a 2x4 wall .. it's supposed to be a 2x6 wall has been that way since before I was a kid in or lets say more than 50 years .. probably 100..
New builders over the last two decades cut corners in every possible way and I've seen stack pipe in 2x4 walls the 2x4 top and bottom plates lose all strength by doing that .. let alone no space for insulation.
It's sad times.. 😔
Besides what different people said about what size pipe should go in what size wall, there are products out there for this exact purpose. It is a PVC or some other kind of plastic pipe with some kind of rubberized coating around them. Those reduce any noise by a lot.
Myself I know only the versions around here in Europe, which are I think PE not PVC, but our sewer lines are not glued, but just stuck together with o rings. Usually watertight as well.
@@alexanderkupke920 yeah you Europeans love o rings .. 🙂
Cast iron corrodes super quickly especially in sewer lines imagine in 20 years the pipe has holes on it and the poo water starts leaking into ur house, ill take pvc and soundproofing over cast iron every day of the week
It doesn’t corrode that quick. It’ll last 50 years in bad conditions. On the vertical like that it’ll last 100 years easy. I come across 60-70 year old cast iron all the time. It’s still just fine unless it’s in the ground.
My sisters house has origional cast iron sewer drain from house to street and her house has 3 tung and groove diagonal sheething layers and asbestos insulation waa built in the 1930s or sumthing like that pre electricity so think cast iron lasts how ever long tho she does need to have it replaced cuz a tree or sumthing grew into it but plastic would have same isue@brasshouse9822
No way just insulate the pipe and the wall. Maybe don’t build absolutely minimum spec walls with 2x4 lmao
Wish they were all 2x6😢
Brother theres a reason pvc is the new cast iron 😂
“Is that worth the extra $200” a downgrade? For $200? No
Cast iron waste pipes are definitely the answer. Just make sure its heavy gauge and it’ll last forever.
I lived in an apartment complex, and you could hear people urinating three flights up, and they were considered nice places. Can you imagine how a dumpy place sounded?
Don't have to imagine it, fam. For years I lived it. Don't miss it a damned bit!
Our old cast iron pipe split when I gave my son a warm bath on a cold evening
I’m a plumber in San Jose CA and have worked on cast iron waste pipe in 100 year old+ buildings that is in good condition.
The cast iron in one of my residential properties is 88 years old and in another, it is 96 years old. Still going strong!
All pvc with a Castro sleave over the pvc in the necessary areas.
Or you could wrap the PVC with sound deadening material. Works great for vehicles and I'm sure it would help a lot with the noise.
More expensive than just putting in cast iron
@@brasshouse9822 less than $70? I highly doubt that.
Sewer pickles 💀
I guess the Bunkers on All In The Family had PVC in their house, Edith and Michael and Gloria heard Archie at every flush.
He would leave the door to the bathroom open .. while he went 😂
You were hearing the flush valve and bowel emptying. You didn't hear the matriculation of waste through the pipes. Didn't help that the loo was at the top of the stairs. Like hooking it up to a megaphone.
@@lifestories1446 yeah, and the volume was also jacked for TV because it was funny!
I agree with using cast iron. But you will still hear it. Trust me I know I hear it in the office every day.
You’ll still hear stuff in cast iron… the PVC will also outlast the cast iron most likely. Insulate the walls and sound dampening and it’ll be fine.
Cast iron will rust on the inside and eventually break
I can hear every flush with cast iron piping going through the basement at my buddy’s house. It might help, but doesn’t solve anything really.
Just remember, cast iron rusts from the inside... Mostly...
You won’t accidentally puncture it either.
I dont have walls from paper 🇸🇰🫡
Better yet. Don't put your toilet above the dining room.
I don't worry about it unless the customer makes a request for it.
Cast iron isn't even up to code in most places. And it certainly wont "silence" your toilet.
It does make it quite more silent but the rest is pvc so u still clearly hear in the ceiling. Keep all PVC and blow the wall bigger to insulate the entire pipe and wall. Im a plumber
Have you ever installed cast iron? If you have have you ever read what it says on the pipe?
@@tommybokelman5565 Have you ever worked on a house older than a few years. If you have, have you noticed why cast iron isn't advised? Don't come at an old pro with your "10 years" of experience. I already had 30 years by the time you got started son. Sit your smart mouth back down.
@@kevinthompson7649 Little bit defensive huh..lol I didn't know you were so insecure with your 30 years experience I just asked a question.. if you've ever installed it? and if you have have you read the pipe? Because it's actually called quiet pipe it says it right on it. And I got a little more than 10 years BTW been plumbing since 2009.
I've been in plenty of houses with cast iron pipes and I could hear it just the same. Sometimes they make even more noises...
If you only convert the vertical stack to cast iron you're still gonna hear it overhead.
No behind the wall you won’t be able to hear it. Not worth the extra 200
We have all seen All In The Family, most people aren't bothered by that sound anymore.
Thought cast iron was a thing of the past with how bad it rusts
Cast iron is best for silent drains. There is not another practical way to silence the drain given the space provided.
1000% worth it. PVC May last but it expands and contracts making noise every time you use it. The only way to make it work is put it in a 2x6 wall so you have room for proper sound insulation
Well they could have put a clear pipe right in the middle of the dining room.
What's embarrassing is having a house full of PEX
You still hear in cast iron too.
Do not use cast iron, we have learned from our grandparents mistakes
That just needs to be a 2x6 wall and insulated
Love the sound of flushes. A frequent reminder that others are getting shiit done.
Everyone complaining about it breaking over time… not knowing there is something called a sacrificial anode
You're still going to hear the toilet flush. You should of put Rockwool in the walls and floor.
$200 can buy a lot of foam/fiber insulation.
I just replaced all the cast iron pipes in my house there wasn't a single one that didn't have holes in it.
As a plumber I think that’s your best offer. On a vertical riser like that it will take much longer than 20 years for it to start pitting anyways. You’ll be retired and they probably sold by then too
No way I'd use cast iron in new construction. I'm about to have to have mine replaced and it's outrageously expensive to do
When a handy man gives plumbing advice 😅
Is it worth having to tear open the wall & replace it when it gets corroded? You could probably just use extra insulation.
Cast iron is nicknamed The quiet pipe for a reason. Or insulate the piss out of the PVC
Hell no because cast iron rust out in 20 years and cast iron doesn't meet today home inspection
Just moved into a brand new house. When the toilet in the master is flushed it sounds like a damn waterfall in the living room 😂
I am currently replacing cast iron pipes with PE. The cast iron ones are all clogged up with rust.
Yes it is worth the extra 200 bucks my dear fellow freind thank you for your help and support of fellow people who don't want to hear toilet flushing especially if you living basement suit thank you
Was that Mr. Hankey going down the drain? 😂😂
Yes, especially since it acts like a grounding rod adding an extra layer of protection to the house from
Gimmick. I have built homes and lived in new homes and not a single time have I heard upstairs flush
The extra $200, the extra weight, the extra time fastening joints, the extra swearing when it leaks, the extra expense in maintenance.............NO!!!!
cast iron won't leak in my lifetime or my kid's. Most of the stuff installed pre WWII is still out there and doing fine.
Once it rusts, you'll get a whole lot worse than sound
It was sound proofed by the insulation 🙄
I think I'd rather them move that pipe someplace else and continue to use PVC.
2x6 or 2x8 wall in that area and insulate the pipe. Cast Iron won't last.
Probably more so that you don't accidentally make a hole with a screw or nail just because you want to hang a picture or shelf
Lmao if you put a cast iron main in a new build you need to be fired immediately
2x6 walls, sound dampening insulation, pipe insulation on pvc, osb firewall, rc1 channel, foam board insulation, sheetrock. Done. Won't hear shit.
Dude they doing plastic pipes who has extra layer of isolation to absorb sounds xD
We had cast iron pipe Crack vertically like 6 feet! Don't use it
Cast iron stack in the wall but, pvc everything else above their heads??? Lol
That's not a house. It's made of bad wooden sticks and some plywood.
$500 a stack
Save the 200 and use it on making code with a breather pipe and insulation
Not long term. But only for noise? Nahhh...
Cast iron can rust over time ?
Cast iron is for the pan
Hell no bro I've spent years getting rid of cast iron, just use special drywall that Cancels out noise,
Or sleeve the pvc with cast. Then you never have to worry about it rusting out. Of course vertical risers seldom rust out like laterals
OR or like Europeans do it. Don't make your walls out of cotton candy paper and failed chalks ticks but wood or bricks. Never had that problem here. But my fav is, Ritch people problems. We don't have an upstairs bathroom and we manage fine
This is why I read comments
You can get sound proofed pvc
How about we say no to a 3" pipe in a 2×4 wall and just insulate it properly 🤦
No pvc won't fail . Cast will
Nah if use see through pipe, with translucent flooring. Real good way to get people to take their shits at home.
Both work well!!
Just wrap the pvc pipe with sound proof blanket I’m sure they exist
Yes. Use sound deadening material they use on cars.
Question: how is your toilet pvc pipea so thin 😮... Our toilet pvc and main drainage pipes inside the yard, towards the main street drain, is all 110mm! Just the pipes from shower, basins and sinks that is 50mm (sometimes 40mm) pipe...
Hell!! Avoid cast iron at all costs!! Just use sound insulation and pvc pipes, NOTHING ELSE!
Why the fuck would you use two different types of piping for plumbing? Just use PVC, spend 1.50$ on some soundproofing foam, and stick it between the pipe and wall, how hard is that?
Just created the homeowner a ton of problems in 15-20 years
That family must be dumping all day.
Buy a castle next time.
Use sch 80 pvc risers. Cast iron will give u problems sooner than later.
Every single comment: No, that was not worth the $200. 😂
OP: 😢
what is code for you 3" pipe in a 3 1/2" stud cavity no room for insulation
let me ask you this, did you have to hack the shit out of the bracing board to install the cast iron pipe or could you have bored a hole removed the board and slide it over your pipe. i like having solid clean work and just that, things start falling apart when we lose focus of that perspective
Just use denser pipe, pvc heavy schedule, car or system 15.
All of a sudden everybody is a plumber.. 😂 both are good for vertical runs as in the case of this video. Cast Iron only lives 20 or less years if you're constantly pouring chemicals down the drain, same as pvc/abs it becomes brittle. Case closed.
Just use isolation man
No
I rather keep my 200 bucks
Is that a thing with PBC?, you can hear the dump plop at the bottom of the pipe
This is literally the most ret@rded conclusion ever. Use pvc.
Use EXTRA HEAVY CAST IRON AND OR SOUND INSULATION!
Will cast iron break when frozen? Serious question
no, it isn't under pressure
Why would a cast iron pipe running through the middle of your house ever freeze?
@@Osono2diWorld I dunno. That’s why I asked. If you live up north??? Winter time? Wind chills and tens below zero below??
Plaster casting over pvc like a cast on broke arm just wet aply and dry then install with insulation if it's critical egg crate the interior and off set 2x4 in a 2x6 wall like previous comment plan better
Double 5/8 drywall over that PVC and don’t worry about it. Maybe throw some of that fancy acoustic glue in between if you wanna really go all out.
