Just getting into hoya. I'm really appreciating their slow growth and the fact that I can buy a small starter plant and not need to up pot it for a couple years. I've got a ton of pothos and philodendrons, which need to be repotted every year.

Hi! I love Hoyas too! One little point for you: Hoya is not a species name, but the name of a genus of plants containing many species. It's very hot where I live, and succulents can get burned on my deck, but not Hoyas. They can really take the sun. Thanks!

Great information as always. I have the most luck with propagating when I use soil. I don’t even put them in a prop box. Just plant the cuttings in small, clear plastic punch cups that I burn holes into. They are small enough to propagate in but large enough to let the plant grow for a while in them. I love watching the roots grow. They fit perfectly in some coffee mugs I found on clearance at Hobby Lobby 😀

This was absolutely on spot. I loved it. My favorite Hoya is the Bella. It got a bloom last fall that disappeared when I replanted it. I had to repot cause it was tipping over every time it got the slightest dry. The soil had become hydrophobic. So it blasted. Now I have mealies on it. I haven’t seen them on others but I’ve got others to add systemic granules into the closest plants.

I water mine about twice a week. Mine are in south facing windows in terracotta. They can dry out within a day depending on the size.
Mine grow startlingly fast seasonally, and then are completely doormat after their growing season.

People need to stop calling Hoyas "succulents". Many have succulent leaves ("succulent" as in a descriptor adjective) but they are not succulents (noun type of plant). I have so SO. MANY. people mistreating their Hoyas because they care for them the same as succulents. Because they're epiphytic (or some that are complete epiphytes) they can have similarities to some succulents in that they store water in their leaves to help survive dry periods and tend to like drier conditions, they are still not succulents. Call them epiphytes, not succulents. Putting Hoya and succulent in the same sentence is like saying orchids are succulents just because they also have water storing leaves. /rantover :)
