Gliwice (Polish: Gliwice, Silesian: Glywicy, German: Gleiwitz) is a city in Silesian Voivodeship in southern Poland, the first mention is in 1276. Gliwice ranked 19th on the list of Poland's largest cities, both in terms of area and population. As of December 31, 2021, Gliwice has a population of 172 628 people.
Since 1742 the city was in Prussia, and since 1871 in Germany under the name Gleiwitz. The city was annexed to Poland in 1945. From 1945 to 1950 it belonged to the Silesian Province, while from 1950 to 1975 it belonged to the so-called Large Katowice Province, and from 1975 to 1998 to the so-called Small Katowice Province.
Gliwice is one of the old Silesian cities whose urban layout in the center still retains the shape of its medieval location. Most likely, Gliwice was granted a city charter back in the 13th century. In the 14th century, the city on the Klodnica River was surrounded by walls. They protected Market Square with a town hall and the nearby All Saints' Church. The layout of the streets resembled a checkerboard. All this has survived to this day in almost unchanged condition.
The heart of the city has been, since the earliest times, the square Market Square with the City Hall in the middle. This brick building was erected as early as the 15th century, but it remains today mainly the result of 18th- and 19th-century reconstructions and modernizations. The market is surrounded by townhouses with arcades.
Traditional street names tell us about the former occupations of their inhabitants. Thus, there are Weaver's (Polish: Tkacka), Cooper’s (Polish: Bednarska) or Miller’s (Polish: Krupnicza), among others. The streets used to reach the city walls, which are preserved, for example, in the vicinity of the castle. They encircled the city along the course of today's Dolnych and Górnych Wałów streets.
On today's Zwycięstwa Street we can admire a whole overview of historicizing and eclectic architectural styles. Such as Neo-Renaissance, Neo-Baroque, Neo-Gothic, Neoclassicism and finally Art Nouveau. However, the greatest artistic significance is attributed to modernist buildings.
