- Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence (Japanese: Senjō no Merī Kurisumasu (戦場のメリークリスマス Battlefield Merry Christmas?)), also known as Furyo (俘虜 Prisoner Of War?) in many European editions) is a 1983 film directed by Nagisa Oshima, produced by Jeremy Thomas and starring David Bowie, Tom Conti, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Takeshi Kitano.
It was written by Oshima and Paul Mayersberg and based on Laurens van der Post's experiences during World War II as a prisoner of war as depicted in his works The Seed and the Sower (1963) and The Night of the New Moon (1970). Sakamoto also wrote the musical score and the vocal theme "Forbidden Colours," featuring David Sylvian, which was a hit single in many territories.
The film was entered into the 1983 Cannes Film Festival in competition for the Palme d'Or. Sakamoto's score also won the film a BAFTA Award for Best Film Music. (1)

Everybody talks about David Bowie and Ryuichi Sakamoto, but Tom Conti was so damn good in this film.

I thought that guy looked alot like David bowie!
His moderate, liberal character was very hard to cheer for in a film with such intense characters but he did a brilliant job
When the movie came out so much was made about the obsession of Captain Yanoi with Celliers. But I think the more interesting relationship (and on screen chemistry) is between Lawrence and Sgt. Hara. Wonderful scene and superb actors from a beautiful and very, very under-rated film.....
I like David Bowie as much as the next guy, but people are nota giving Tom Conti the credit he deserve
All 4 men were great in their own way in this but I totally agree. The relationship between Hara and Lawrence is my favorite aspect of this movie. The ending brings me to tears every single time.

The friendship between Lawrence and Hara is so complicated but beautiful. Their friendship really showed the collision between culture differences.
Especially the ending. I wanted to see the film and bought it on Blu-ray, at first it caught my eye because of David Bowie. Who I’ve only now become a fan of unfortunately, the film is truly beautiful and amazing. The ending had me tear up and grin, as they’ve become close and respect the hell out of each other.
Bowie's performance is great, but so is Conti's, and his and Kitano's interactions are memorable. The ending in particular had me tearing up.

I’m half Japanese and half English. I sometimes feel as though my existence symbolizes the flower that grew out of the seed of friendship between Hara san and Lawrence and that people may learn to overcome their differences one day and understanding each other.

Beautiful imagery, but I did not think their friendship was beautiful
I really feel that Sergeant Hara, not Celliers or Yanoi, is the central character of the film. There's this running theme of how the British prisoners' (relative) sympathy and tolerance for weakness is threatening to the principles of bushido masculinity. Hence Hara's incomprehension about Lawrence's attitude towards imprisonment ("How can you stand the shame?"). Hence Yanoi being defeated with a kiss. And what a beautiful and bittersweet surprise it is when Hara, of all people, gets roaring drunk and pardons Lawrence and Celliers purely out of goodwill. I think it's a commentary on the humanity that was suppressed under a brutally rigid code of honor. "So, Sergeant Hara, you're human after all."
この映画の中で、たくさんの印象的なシーンがありますが、このシーンは大好きです。戦場の狂気の中で、唯一ハラとローレンス、セリアズが微笑みあっている。これだけでも大きいのに、このシーンがエンディングにつながっていく。何とも言い難いシーンですね。でもこのシーンが本当に、好きで慰められます。

相方のビートきよしも頭を坊主にしてロケについていったけど、映画には出してもらえず。
映画は、両国が勝ったが、勝利のために何か素晴らしいものを失ったことを示しています。 日本はアジアでの影響力を拡大し、アジアの大部分を西から解放したかもしれませんが、日本の息子たちの命を犠牲にしていました。 英国は、日本や他のアジア人にそれを与える前に、一時的にいくつかの領土を維持することができましたが、英国の魂を犠牲にしました。 両国は今や素晴らしい友達であり、私たちは永遠に繁栄します。
徴兵されたのではなく17才で自ら志願して軍人になった。

This movie was so intoxicating to me back then. My vocal coach even thought David was a genius. He will be missed and NEVER fogotten!!!! RIP
Lawrence and Celliers’ relief is so amazing. They went through so much. Lawrence collapsing always breaks my heart. They are both exhausted.

Even in war the folklore of Santa Clause brings relief and happiness, even for a brief moment. The hard realities wash away with the spirit of Christmas. Merry Christmas everyone.
Despite his social and military conditioning, somewhere deep inside Hara was a spark or even a tiny glow of empathy and kindness. The time of year helps. It is a traditional focus for such things. And for Hara, tradition would have been everything, and as an honourable warrior, it was important to him to honour his enemies tradition. Any conflict he had with orders were possibly ameliorated with a nice drop of sake. 'Tis the season to be jolly. Melly Chlisama one and all.

Well, considering that were both men (Major Jack Celliers & Colonel John Lawrence) were scheduled to be executed for a false accusation of smuggling a radio into the prison camp, I am sure that any folklore would have had the two men reacting in the same manner.

ハラの魂が最後に救われるきっかけとなる場面ですね。

Do you know what's also great about this scene? How obviously knackered Celliers and Lawrence are, bags under the eyes and all. Never seen anyone in a film look so convincingly tired as in this scene.

I think this part of the movie is really good and quite funny as well when they start saying about Father Christmas and Santa Clause but the seargent is very pissed on his Sake and thinks everything's funny but it's still one of my favourite parts in the movie.

第一次世界大戦の頃にクリスマスの日だけ戦闘が停止し、両軍の兵士達が交流したって話があったよ。
だから、この話もあながち創作と言い切れないと思う。
