This is all George. The only guitar McCartney plays on this is bass (overdubbed). John played some rhythm guitar during the “out of college” portion. The rest is George.

The Beatles began recording ‘You Never Give Me Your Money’ on 6 May 1969. They laid down 36 takes of the song, which at this point ended abruptly immediately before the “One two three four five six seven” refrain.
Paul McCartney’s guide vocals were recorded on track one of the eight-track tape; his piano was on track two; Ringo Starr’s drums on three; John Lennon’s guitar on five; and George Harrison’s guitar on six. Lennon’s rhythm guitar is first heard as the “Out of college” section begins.
McCartney alone returned to it on 1 July, overdubbing his lead vocals onto take 30. It was left again until 11 July, when he added a bass guitar part, which was recorded onto track seven of the tape.
Four days later, on 15 July, he added more vocals to track five, joined by Starr on tambourine. McCartney also overdubbed tubular bells onto track eight, and manually double-tracked his second-verse lead vocals on track one.
Six rough stereo mixes were also made on 15 July, only three of which were complete. None were used on the album, and the song received further overdubs at a later date.
On 30 July six reduction mixes of the song were made. These were numbered 37-42, and take 40 was considered the best. Additional vocals and tambourine were added to it, although the mix and overdubs were later discarded.

Actually, just about everything in this video is George.
This particular guitar part was played as part of a live take in the studio, recorded in May 1969 at Olympic in London. Paul was on piano and vocals, George and John were on guitars (possibly both Epiphone Casinos), and Ringo was on drums obviously. One of the outtakes from this session can be heard on the Abbey Road deluxe edition.
On the tape box for this session, it was apparently written that George was playing a "bassy" guitar, which certainly describes the lead tone on this song quite well. It's also clear that the same guitar that's playing this lead was doing the fills at the beginning and either turned up the volume or kicked on a fuzz pedal for the solos. The fills have been confirmed to be played by George, as session tapes reveal that he was going over what these parts would sound like with Paul prior to the taping - George's intention was that they would harmonize with Paul's vocal line, as they do on the released version.
All of which is to say that the guitar solos in this song were played by George. I'm guessing he was using his Casino because I think the humbuckers on a Les Paul would have handled the distortion a bit more smoothly; moreover there are images of George using his Casino during the sessions for the Billy Preston album That's The Way God Planned It, which occurred around the same time. George later double-tracked the lead part before the "one sweet dream" section, and the second guitar part can be heard in the other video on this channel. The arpeggios and the outro riff were played by John; ADT was applied after the fact so they sound a little like they were put through a Leslie but actually it was Paul's piano that was using the Leslie when the track was recorded (it was switched on during the "out of college" section, but it was later mixed out and replaced with the sped-up saloon piano). In fact Paul doesn't play any guitar on this song.
People think that the arpeggios were played by George because a) it sounds like the riff from "Badge" by Cream, b) George probably played the "reprise" version at the end of "Carry That Weight" and c) because people incorrectly associate the Leslie - which, again, wasn't even used here - with George exclusively during this period. While George did use the Leslie a lot, John did too: for instance there's his finger-picked rhythm guitar (arpeggios, no less) on "Octopus' Garden" and "Sun King."
EDIT: For good measure, I'll point out that this really doesn't sound much like John's guitar work anyway. Even John's most melodic lead playing, as heard on on "Get Back" or "The Ballad of John and Yoko," tends to be highly rhythmic in nature. He'll go for short and snappy phrases with little sustain, whereas this features a lot of fairly adventurous bends and longer held notes, which are typical of George in the later Beatles era, probably due to his being influenced by Indian music. The closest John ever got to something like this was on "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" and even then he was just mimicking his own vocal line.

Thank you!!! Some one finally shares my view on who plays what. This has been one of my biggest mysteries regarding the Beatles songs. Who played which guitars on this track? It’s not an easy thing to figure out. Beatles Rock Band sure got it wrong in the Abbey Road DLC. But I digress, I think I have something to add to this. I think the “bassy guitar” George played was the Fender Bass VI. The nature of how much the intro parts sustain and how much bass frequencies there is always made me think that. Then this isolated audio was the final proof to my suspicion. During the “Out of college” part, the rhythmic strummed “jazzy” chords reveal the secret. There are chord voicings that are just not possible to reach on a standard tuned 6 string guitar…but they are possible on the Fender 6 string bass. It also was not unlikely for John/George to use the Bass VI to strum really low-voiced chords (Dig It, Back in the USSR). What is so cool about this revelation is that it’s the only occurrence of a beatle playing a guitar solo on this instrument. Thank you for properly and perfectly explaining George and John’s contributions to this song. It’s always been a pet-peeve of mine with the stories surrounding this song.

This is George! I know this is controversial, but please refer to Dimitri Mitrovic’s comment on this video. He perfectly explains this phenomenon and I furthered his explanation to explain how this part played by George, was also controversially played on the Fender Bass VI. I love discussing this stuff! Such a great revelation that I’ve been searching the answer for, for a very long time.

George plays the Les Paul on its neck setting. He plays all the parts at the beginning and all the lead, including the end. John plays the Epiphone Casino and can first be heard on the ‘out of college section’. His playing in the ‘one sweet dream’ but is some of my favourite rhythm playing.

According to Ian McDonald, this is John Lennon's part. McCartney didn't play guitar in this one. Harrison's guitar is clearly the one doing all the arpeggios. It 100% sounds like his Rosewood Telecaster though a leslie speaker.
In The Beatles Rock Band this is the part that Lennon appears playing too. And that game was made under the supervision of Beatle historians.

    • @D.A.99740
      @D.A.99740 2 роки тому +6

McDonald didn't have access to the original session tapes. He probably just assumed that based on the fact that it sounds sort of similar to the riff on the Cream song "Badge," which George co-wrote. If you listen to the alternate takes, which are available on UA-cam, you'll hear that the Leslie speaker was actually applied to Paul's piano, not the guitar. The reason the arpeggios sound the way that they do is because they were treated with ADT after the fact.
And RockBand animations aren't really infallible. For instance they show John singing the "aahs" in A Day in The Life (most people who've analyzed and dissected the tapes agree that it's Paul) and for some reason they give George Paul's high harmony part in the "She's So Heavy" sections of I Want You.
