The Giant isn't simulating a fake really tall piano. It's sampled from an actual really tall piano. It's sampled from the Klavins Piano Model 370i, a two story tall upright piano. The Una Corda is also a real instrument from the same company, which has one string per note.
OK, sir, I have to tell you. This is by far the best "demo some VST" video I've ever seen, especially of piano VSTs. Everyone rapes pianos with contemporary harmonies, blending everything in one big mess. I don't even like classical music that much, but you delivered exactly what a musician needs to hear when deciding on a new VST. All the nuances, all the dynamics, all the individual characters. Kudos. Thank you very much.
absolutely beatiful. I wish there was a video of you just playing piano for hours, especially alicia's keys w hall reverb was an out of body experience
The Maverick, Noire, or Grandeur with Raum sound better, in my opinion. That setup instead with a skilled player. Maybe some accompanying pads in the background from Massive X or FM8 would be killer, or a soundscape from Ashlight or Straylight with the pianist playing over it. 😎👍
I love me a good clear and crisp sounding grand piano. You can always take away from the sound and make it darker, but it's much tricker to put it back in and make it brighter. Noire and Gandeur are definitely my favorites here
Actually The Giant is not a simulated or emulated piano but a real piano. It’s the Model 370i (3.70 meters in height) by David Klavins who also built the Una Corda (one string per note) and just recently the Model 470i (4.70 meters in height). And what happened to ALL the other pianos by Native Instruments? I could spot at least another 7: • Berlin Grand (which was dismissed when the Gentleman/Grandeur/Maverick arrived but just recently showed up in the downloads again) • Kontakt Factory Library: - Band/Acoustic Pianos/Grand Piano - Band/Acoustic Pianos/Ragtime Piano - Band/Acoustic Pianos/Upright Piano - Orchestral/6 - Keyboard Instruments/August Foerster Grand - Orchestral/6 - Keyboard Instruments/Concert Grand • Cuba Library - 4 - Melodic Instruments/Piano :-D
Thanks for the info! I was going mainly off of their current acoustic piano list: www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/keys/acoustic-pianos/
The Una Corda is really interesting, especially without the added "textures." The Noire probably my favorite of the grand piano styles. More presence and accuracy than any of the others, but no harsh high end.
I heard that, too. The Grandeur and The Maverick have "Deep" presets that sound more impressive like the Noire. The default presets that load when you load each library will not show off each libraries' best, in my opinion.
Also have the pianos but running out of drive space, so came here to decide which ones to install... stayed for the great playing! Beautiful technique, man 👌
@@pete3816 Imagine a world where we talk to people on the internet like they're actual human beings while still getting a point across. Hope you have a lovely day.
How come his VST plugins have more resonance out of all of the other youtube samples I heard? Was the audio and the video recorded separately? What mic did he use?
"Alicia's Keys" reminded me of an extremely good Steinway B. In a studio with acoustically dead walls, so no wall reflections that muddy it. (Each instrument has its own character and depending on preference you may like the one in the showroom, think "meh", or dislike it.)
Props to your chops. I've mostly watched your modular stuf until now. It's clear to me how equalizing synth gear is -- one can get great musical results with minimal virtuosity or even music theory training. Watching you tickle the ivories just now shows me that you're coming from a place of many hours of a traditional music practice (maybe everyone already knew that about you? Am I late to the party?). That's definitely something special in my eyes. I'm inspired. Anyhoo... I thoroughly enjoyed watching and hearing you today. Thanks.
Your authentic French and Italian pronunciation of the pianos' names is hilarious (0:10, 0:13)! I love your spontaneous improvisational ideas. If you ask me, The Grandeur is the most intimately beautiful and flexible of them all. That is why I chose that one for "My Fondest Memory" on my channel. Thank you for sharing your exceptional skills with us!
Yes, the grandeur is definitely the best sound out of the first three. Big rich bass and crisp highs. I know he says the Maverick has a darker more mellow tone, but if you want that you can just turn down the tone color of the grandeur halfway and you get the same result, but with the same full sound.
Alicia's Keys and The Giant go really well together. Pair the lower keys of The Giant with the higher keys of Alicia's Keys, split 50/50 on one keyboard. Bask in the fullness.
Lovely playing. Nice demo. You obviously know your stuff! I have Native Instruments Ultimate Collection but its great to hear it through someone elses fingers and technique. You show how each piano is suited to different styles of playing very well. Brilliant.
Thanks for your video. Because you play so nice and relaxed - not too many notes, not too impressive- it's easier to just listen to the sound. Well done!
thanks man their are lots of videos like this but most of them i find unhelpful and hard to watch when trying to find options for different piano sounds, you had just the right amount of talking and playing!
i can't decide wtf. You're playing so well in all of those libraries. this tells me no matter the piano, that depends on the pianist. guess I'll go back with FL keys.
The Gentleman is not as good as others but has something magical. I have it and I also have the Noire. Noire is perfect at all levels. But I love the Gentleman, I don't know why. I play with it at most time.
Actually, The Giant and the Una Corda are very different pianos from what you would normally buy or get... They're specially made and handcrafted... So you're looking at a full-on "custom" piano instead of a traditional one... Side note here... Nils Frahm actually played a big part in the making of these pianos (especially with Una Corda which it's mostly his idea) along with David Klavins (the luthier/inventor)

The Giant is actually based on a REAL really tall piano developed and built by the same guy who did the Una Corda, Klavins. Those are real samples! The piano was built in 1986, if I recall correctly, and WAS the tallest upright piano in the world... up until he built the M450i, which is larger and sounds just as incredible.
I was really glad to discover this video. I don't have the skills to test these pianos myself. From your tests it seems that Maverick is very tailored to pizzicato type playing. In contrast Alicia's Keys seems to lend itself to more flowing pieces. I like the full body of Noire. Grandeur seems like a generic grand piano. Gentleman has a very friendly tone, and probably would be good for demos, songwriting and pop playing. Una corda and The Giant are niche players that have their place. I would be interested in your take on the pianos and e-pianos in IK Multimedia's Sampletank 4.
