My understanding when you are abeam the numbers is not that that is when you start descent, but rather that is when you pull power back and MAINTAIN altitude until you bleed off enough speed to deploy flaps then starting descent. I suppose there are a million variations to doing anything. Those variations could be considered options available to you if you find you are consistently too high or too low on final.
