Hey Gabriel, welcome to Tunisia. I am Tunisian and I have been to Djerba several times. The best beaches of the island are to be found around the area of MIDOUN and more specifically the ZONE TOURISTIQUE where you can also find most hotels , restaurants, clubs and cafés... Enjoy

Love that a lot of locals actually seem to shop at this souk and as Gabe mentioned no hustlers. Makes it so much more inviting and authentic and not a place where you have the feeling everybody is just trying to rip you off. Some places looked so classical North African it felt like you were on an Aladdin movie set or something, simply amazing! What a difference it makes to for example the experience in Morocco, when you actually get to enjoy the place and take it all in on your own terms.

Very nice to see an island which has deserts, is in hot desert climate. Thank you for sharing this with us, Gabriel. As I recall, only Socotra (Yemen) and Bahrain are like this as bigger islands. And I like this white-blue Tunisian style of houses, remind me so much on some Greek Islands but is very different in some way as culture is different.
Have a nice time in Tunis and surrounding areas like Carthage and Sidi Bou Said. Maybe it is still possibility to rent a car some day and go to El Djem (2,5 hours ride) as things on south like Matmata, Ksar Hadada, Tozeur etc. are not an option anymore, it seems.

11:00 Lost in translation. Ottoman Turks liberated Tunisia. Here's the story: The Spaniards settled in the huge castle they had built in the valley since 1535. At that time, Kheireddine Barbaros and his Turkish pirates were looking for a harbor for their ships. The Tunisian Sultan allowed them to use the island of Djerba, from which the Spaniards were expelled and settled there. Including the Spanish army occupied. In addition to the island of Djerba, Dargouth Pasha conquered Gafsa in 1556 and Kairouan (capital of the Almoravid Shababid emirate) in 1557 and Beyler Bay (supreme commander) Ali Pasha or 'Alij Ali' entered Tunis in 1569 before being evacuated by the Spanish in 1573. The Ottoman Sultan Selim I was determined to eradicate the Spaniards from African countries for strategic reasons (control of the southern bank of the Strait of Sicily), political (completion of the conquest of the countries of this bank from Egypt to the borders of the Maghreb) and religious (jihad was the constants of Ottoman politics). With the help of the inhabitants, the Ottomans were able to storm the huge castle of La Goulette and then liberate Tunisia and finally eliminate the Spanish presence during the summer of 1574. Yes Gabe def avoid smelling that sargasso seaweed as much as possible, the gasses coming off of the rotting seaweed give that noxious
Smell and it is very toxic if inhaled for long periods of time and can cause some pretty nasty health issues. Obviously just casually walking by and smelling that terrible odor is very unpleasant but nothing to worry about.

Do you prefer driving on the right side or left side of the road?

As he is American, it would probably be the right hand side

Definitely the right side. I went on a road trip in the UK a couple months ago (didn't film that trip). Driving on the left is a little confusing, but what is a lot more difficult is dealing with a stick shift. Shifting gears while going through multi-lane roundabouts and trying to figure out where to exit is pretty crazy. If you have an automatic transmission that makes it a lot easier.

@@GabrielTravelerVideos I drove in Slovenia 🇸🇮 in June and they drive on the right hand side and I was renting a manual car where I had to use a gear stick. It was really strange for me driving a manual car where the gear stick is on the right hand side because in the U.K. where I come from, they drive on the left as you know. However, I did get used to the driving in Slovenia after 10 minutes or so in the car 🚗

@@dee74raz Yeah the stick shift is the main problem, otherwise it's pretty easy. Although, when I flew from the UK to Greece and rented a car there, at one point I realized I was driving on the left side of the road and had to remind myself to get on the other side. Luckily no accidents transpired.

Right after he mentions hustlers, someone proves why it's often not worth trying to engage with locals. You want to meet and learn about the people, their culture, and their country. All they want is your money. People suck. I figured out a long time ago why he doesn't try to engage with people on the videos, like Ace or Kurt Caz does. Sometimes they're quite interesting to show on the videos, and I enjoy it, but I can also understand not wanting the hassle. It's an insult when you introduce yourself and just want to talk to people, while they're completely disinterested with you and are only interested in your money.

People need to make a living but its very annoying and probably puts off a lot of tourists.

@@northernstar4811 Exactly. It puts people off when locals treat travelers/explorers like tourists, when they're people who enjoy exploring other cultures and countries, versus being just sunbathing beach goers.
