I'm from Atlanta and I lived thru it. It didn't get a little bit wild, it got a whole lot wild. Kids today have no idea how bad and freaky their parents were. A Spring Break HBCU outdoor party that started small and kept expanding each and every year until it almost permanently scarred the city. Throw in the Olympics right after it and Atlanta hasn't been the same since.
You right bro I went to school down in the A and it’s was great from my 1st year of 93 by the time the Olympics hit 97-98 wasn’t the same no where near
I attended some of the original Freaknik celebrations in the late 80s when it was confined to a small park (John A White Park ) on the west side of Atlanta. It started as a spring break celebration for kids that could not afford to go out of town on spring break that attended the Atlanta University center. (100 - 150 people in the park ) Freaknik amazingly grew to over 250,000 people by 1999. The large crowds overwhelmed Atlanta, and the city started to crack down on the events, by closing a lot of streets and exits to prevent cruising, especially in downtown Atlanta. All the exits on the expressway in the city was closed so by the time you found an open exit you were out of ATL. The last few years of freaknik was very dangerous. Attended by mostly dope boys, and Hoochie mamas that had never been to college. College students chose to go to other cities on their spring break because the original fun and joy of the event was long gone.
why as Black Americans do we allow celebreties to portray their aberrant and frankly abhorent behavior as normalized behavior that the rest of us should aspire too I guess on the basis of their fame and celebrity. I admire the talent…but we can and should do better. What would our Grand Parents think?
