What is a black cow drink made of? Combine 1/2 cup of evaporated milk with 2 cups of root beer (your choice of the brand but we used A&W Root Beer for this particular one) and 2 ounces of your favorite bourbon. Mix then split between two tall cocktail glasses. Add ice to fill the glass. Drizzle chocolate sauce on the top.
Most of us have heard their tunes hundreds, even thousands of times over the last 40-odd years, and we're just as grooved as you are hearing them for the first time! Steely Dan NEVER gets old! You have so many more superb tunes of theirs to discover!
This came out when I was in University. Stereo stores began using the album Aja as their speaker test music - definitely a headphones album.. BTW, at that time, Steely Dan was probably your favourite band's favourite band!! Welcome to the rabbit hole!!
I'll roll with you on this unending rabbit hole. Steely Dan, the music musicians listen to when they get home. So many incredible songs in this catalog. Do all studio. Technical pefection without auto anything. The 70s. Nothing like today. Just reverb variations.. chorus, fuzz pedals and wawa for Hendrix and Jerry Garcia. Just working those instruments. No buttons.
As others here have said, this is a masterpiece album. If you're interested in continuing to listen to SD, they have an extensive list of classic songs, full of more masterpieces. SD is in a category all their own, they fuse blues, rock, jazz and funk and with brilliant lyrics and the best studio musicians ever, you have Steely Dan. Enjoyed your reaction!
Excellent late night chill and relax album, drink and some smoke, lights down low, or on a road trip, around 2 am but still wide awake driving on some distant unknown city streets...never misses
If anyone listens to the majority of Steely Dan they know this is the most creative guys ever in arrangement and lyrics....Donald Fagan now 75 years old and Walter Becker who died a few years ago....they are still "dropping jaws" of all music lovers who take the time to seriously listen!!
The Black Cow in the song refers to an adult beverage made with Kahlua, half-and-half, and Coca-Cola, or evaporated milk, root beer, and bourbon... The large black disc called LP Vinyl Records have made a big comeback in the last 10 years and they are made in different colors also but black vinyl is the standard . ..
LP record jackets (sleeves) are often considered works of 🖼️ art, sometimes suitable for framing. I have several signed (autographed) album covers from some of my favorite musicians and friends, on my walls that I cherish. A vinyl record sounds differently than a digital sound file with some improvements and a few detriments. The details are fascinating but listening convenience on an iPad or phone with high quality earphones is a phenomenal luxury that I enjoy tremendously. Not to mention the availability on UA-cam to listen and watch the greatest jazz, folk, rock, classical, world music, and fusion, musical artistry from the past 75 years is pure joy. And, this was science fiction when I was a young musician and fan.
I think you’re talking about vinyl records. We would bring a Steely Dan record with us to buy a good stereo system because it was the epitome of great crisp clear sound. You might play it on a few systems at the store to see which stereo had the best sound before you would buy it. I’m talking about the huge turn table and speaker system. That’s what we had back in the 70’s!😊
Before the 90's, everything $ was about radio play. And all radio play was dominated by songs that were 3:30 or less. Some F.M. stations bucked the system and played longer songs. For most stations, this had everything to do ad revenue. But it made artist create shorter songs.
This song late nights 😎 Being dressed to the nines ,dancing in the club. I am curious are there songs now that give that hip sophisticated sensual feeling. ☮️
I guess you haven't picked up on their snarky, pettiness yet 😆. When they came out in the 70s I was in grade school. I picked up on it then and I was hooked😆 My alcoholic chainsmoking great aunt(RIP) used to drink Black Cows in the 70s. She'd let us "taste" it. It was an "adult" root beer float. Miss that crazy dame😢
Welcome to the world and rabbit hole that is Steely Dan. When you listen to Steely Dan you should have the lyrics handy. Even the way they came upon their name is clever. So, let's start at the top. So what is the story behind this song? What is a Black Cow? It's basically a root beer float using Kahlua. The adult version however uses bourbon. Rudy's (Bar and Grill) still exists here in NYC on 9th ave between 44th and 45th. Then and now it is essentially a dive bar. In the 70's 42nd St was a hub for pro's and johns, and Rudy's was often where pro's, musicians, artists, and actors would mingle. On the bar when he sees her are her remedies (alcohol and drugs), and her book of numbers, so she was more a high priced pro. The pros also strolled from 26th and 11th ave to the Javits Center on 34th and 11th Ave down to 42nd, down to 7th Ave. There were many on the east side on Greene St from Houston to Spring St as well. He is a man who was hopelessly in love with a prostitute that cannot change her ways, and his many attempts to change her have proven fruitless. This is now perhaps his goodbye to her.

We always put ice cream instead of ice, but yes Yes YES so good!!
Entire album is fire! You will not be disappointed!
Dude is so young he don't even recognize the hip hop sample from UPTOWN BABY. Love it.
Yeah, when I watch black guys react to Black Cow I just wait to see their eyes light up with familiarity of hearing that intro.
One of my favorite albums!!
That's because it is one of the greatest albums of all time.
You’re going to want to sit and hear the entire album !!

That big disk we called a Record. They used to be the only home music media available to buy...They have made a bit of a comeback lately..

"Black Cow" is the focal point of the end of the relationship. Finish the the Drink. It's over. The Black Cow represents the end. ✌️

I have a recipe for a Black Cow. Nothing more than an ice cream soda with root beer. No booze, NY has funny names for drinks, egg cream for instance.

@@ed.z. For serious vinyl collectors this album is essential
Your reaction to this masterpiece is exactly the same way we all felt the first time we heard it.
Hahaha. I remember it well. Especially Peg (2nd on album). And then I looked at the personnel… so many jazz professionals. 👍

This whole album is smooth as silk, or bourbon.
Yes yes yes! I mean these vibes, right?! Just incredible. Keep on diving into more Steely Dan. Aja (the song) will blow, your, mind.
The very definition of smoootthh to be sure.

Next one should be "Hey Nineteen." Let's goooooo!!!!!!!
The whole album is legendary among other incredible albums that The Dan have done. Check out their Countdown to Ecstasy album. It will dazzle you!
Lololol....A Black Cow is a like a root beer float. Can be made with liquor.
A Black Cow is a soda fountain drink like an egg cream.
You’re gonna love “Kid Charlemagne”. I’ll be keeping an eye out for that! 🤗
I gave my big black things away. Is that rum you're drinking?
#SoOutrageous

Did you say Saint Lucia as in the island? If so, I was actually there once about 15 years ago. I loved it.

You could go blind into another song with a name that's close to this, with no context to the song. "Black Dog" by Zep
Yes. Records sound better. Analogue vibrates the air greatly. There are UA-cam about it.
Tenor sax.
Write in and suggest alternative titles. They need a good laugh.
