Sometimes they make you cry.
Sometimes they don't.
Sometimes those movies are about dogs. Sometimes they're about sick teenaqers. Sometimes they're about other things.
But are all tearjerkers created equal?
Some would say no.
In this video essay I try to talk about some things, and along the way, mention movies like "Titanic," "Arrival," and "Old Yeller," among other movies.

Just because emotional beats are struck does not make the writing, directing, etc. better. Sometimes these films that do make people feel emotional are sometimes the worst films because they’re manipulative. Emotional films are con-artists in movie form. The best films are the ones that make you feel because they’re well made and earn their emotional beats because of the writing, directing, etc.
