Analysis on the "Cut it close" VS "Nailed it" debate
"Cut it close" is by far the superior joke. Not only it's original, but also focuses on the specific situationTamago was in.
It talks about the "cutting" part of the challenge, but also references the timer bomb with the word "close".
"Nailed it" doesn't do that . This could be used in anything that has to do with Nails. But it doesn't reference the timer bomb at all.
However, there's something else that makes "Nailed it" funnier. It doesnt matter if "Nailed it" is funny or not. Just because that was the
obvious joke, saying the obvious joke makes it funnier to the audience. Especially with the "Thank you, we will be right back"
part of the joke afterwards, it makes total sense
So on one part we have a more clever joke that we can appreciate, on the other hand a funnier joke which is not really original and specific to the situation that he was, but it works either way.
I understand both sides of it. I don't think there is a "better" answer, it is just a matter of preference at this point.

I was so expecting you to say nailed it, and I was still going to laugh because I love puns, but it would've been more of a preemptive laugh because I knew it was coming. But then you said cut it close, which not only completely subverted my expectations, but I also just found it much funnier, so both of those things combined caused me to genuinely laugh. I actually can really relate to this video because it gets really tiring whenever I make a mistake in a video (or in your case a missed opportunity) and then all my UA-cam notifications are just some strangers saying "BRO ACTUALLY YOU COULD'VE DID THIS INSTEAD OF THAT!!!!" when they didn't even look to see if that was already a common comment.
I know that calling out "how annoying this repetitiveness is" wasn't the point of the video, but many people can interpret things in many different ways.

Imagine the only reason his last video blew up was because everybody was rushing to correct tamago about his mistake.
Just some extra analysis. Using “nailed it” over “cutting it close” would’ve increased the percentage of viewers who actually thought the joke was funny by an amazing 34%. As stated before by someone else, the funniness factor loss of 24% really is whopping. Putting into perspective, let’s say y’all jokes were started with 50% funniness. The joke instead went down to 26% where the joke could’ve instead been at a fantastic 84%. Really lost a great amount of laughter out of that one, tamago.

You could have clickbaited the video by naming it "Responding to the criticism."
In my personal view I do think he could have said the phrase known as ‘Nailed it’. A clearly superior choice rather that the pathetic puny ‘Cutting It Close.’ Regarding the allegations of that particular phrase being stolen I would disagree with that statement, as I purely think that the joke known as ‘Nailed it’ was a completely fun and original joke made by one person that inspired plenty of others to try and make similar jokes but to then fail, therefore it was reused over and over again countless times by plenty of individuals on the internet. So for a conclusion, I think the joke known as ‘Nailed it’ is a significantly better pun to use in the situation he had found himself in. The pun known as ‘Cutting It Close’ is not entirely the best option that he could’ve used but I greatly respect his attempt to make his audience have a great chuckle over the situation he was just in.
