I was on that trip. I was lucky to have spent 30 days with the wonderful people of that area. I learned three things: NEVER talk politics with an Irishman, NEVER refuse a drink offered by an Irishman, and NEVER slam your beer mug down sideways. The people in the village were welcoming and wonderful One of our trip officers was African American and was a good pool (snooker) player. It made for some interesting evenings in the pub! Great times!!!
60 Minutes documented Reagan's visit to Ireland, and captured one frightening encounter for Reagan at an elementary school. Reagan was having a look around at the school, and in one of the classroms Reagan glanced into, an Irish boy turned his own head around about 280 degrees in the blink of an eye. This was caught on 60 Min's cameras. Reagan also saw this happen, and was greatly disturbed, expressing worry that the boy's head would soon fall off.
Well, if that was the case it wasn't Clinton's business either. And to be fair to Clinton he did his best to help. Reagan was too busy cosying up to Thatcher to really try anything meaningful for peace.
