  • Welcome back to the continuation into the Esso Synergy 99 issues. Please check out the previous videos in this series to discover our findings with the Supreme (Super) Unleaded Petrol, before seeing the results with this sample taken from Esso "Westside" (booyakasha) Peterborough, Cambs.
I'll update this in due course as it's 1am and I have work tomorrow..
    Thanks for watching!

Great result again for Esso at Peterborough! It must be down to distribution? East of England and East Midlands must be supplied from the same Esso processing point! Thing is, how long will it stay zero ethanol?

Try as I might, I couldn't get hold of an "Iz it coz I iz black?" mp3 online, else I'd have definitely included it.

I would be keen to see you try shell from as many locations as possible aswell as tesco, the key thing is that they are consistent, if I have my car mapped on a tank of 102octane v power then the next tank is 98 octane this will cause issues, if tesco has a much lower spread 98-99) even though it’s lower octane it would still be better in my eyes due to consistency!

I did pick up Shell V-Power from this area too (should be the next fuel test video), but can't go too nuts on it for now unless the channel becomes monitised in someway or I get donations, so I can actually be out somewhere for the whole day collecting samples. You're quite right, a guy at one of the top dyno-tuning places said exactly this and that you can get more bhp from Shell V-Power, but there's no guarantee the batches are consistent and has to map the car to account for that. He then credits Tesco Momentum as being one of the most consistent formulas he has seen, albeit not as good as V-Power is "sometimes."

Thanks for doing these tests etc. The results from this one are at odds with Esso's website that says from Sept 2023 they will be adding ethanol to their Synergy supreme!! I stopped using it after then, I went back to Shell V power due to the 99 Ron (as it looked like Esso was a lower Ron). Anyone know if the Esso station on the A12 at Capel between Colchester and Ipswich is ethanol fee?

You're welcome and thanks for the comment! Don't forget Esso have only quoted the same as the other fuel brands, that their Super Unleaded may contain up to 5% ethanol, when previously they were the only ones openly saying which one was ethanol-free. I'm almost certain the one at that garage would be E0 since they have 2 of their 5 distributors centres not far away. I've been researching their distribution network for the UK and I'll be doing a stand alone video on it in the near future.

Also, feel free to send in a sample (need 700ml) if you wanted me to confirm it.

@@boilerhousegarage it may be the distribution network is really important. I think on the Esso website it said that that ethanol free may vary around the country. I think any analysis of the distribution centres will be really important on this.

I hope sometime ypu get to test some Texaco 99 as its always over looked there aren't so many Texaco around and not sell 99.

Yes, I hope so too. Had UA-cam allowed me to accept memberships and/or adsense, I'd be travelling a bit further afield purely to get a diverse number of samples. I did check at my nearest Texaco recently and they're still only supplying their kaccy 97RON.

In your previous video the octane number was 93 and now it's 100.
In your opinion, what is the root to this difference?

I'm 90% sure Esso's additives package for their "Supreme 99" was formulated for a national expectation for 2-3% ethanol (which in itself is an octane booster). So the areas that didn't have ethanol in fell quite short of the 99RON it should have been. However I've more recently retested the areas that were 93RON and they too show consistent 100+ octane.
