  • We're back with another sample of Esso Synergy Supreme 99. This time from Bangor in North Wales, thanks to Thomas Davies who sent it in to the channel for us to test for ethanol content. Due to the issues with the fuel in this area resulting in 93RON, I'm including this in the octane testing series as it would serve well to back up my theory as to why Esso's petrol is substandard in the areas where ethanol is not added. Apologies for repeating the said hypothesis several times in the video, but too many people seem to struggle to understand things I've mentioned in previous videos, so explaining the same thing a few different ways I hope helps.
Again a massive thank you to Tom for sending in the sample and too all my subscribers old and new--the channel has seen a lot of love recently!
Please see the previous video on discovering the issue with Esso's octane here: • Testing Petrol / Gasol... and consider subscribing if you haven't already. Given the channel analytics, none of the types of video seem to be more popular than another, which is why I do have a mix of car repair, driving, servicing, fuel testing and other random videos (as each series seems to have that one video that does very well) so I'll keep with the same format for as long as it takes to see a change in what's popular or not. Please also leave any feedback (good or bad) in the comments and what you would personally like to see more of (sounds like an Only Fans! 😆)
    Thanks for watching!

Due to closures on New Years Eve had to use Esso E5 as.only station open. Definite drop in performance with this fuel. I normally use either BP Ultimate or Shell VPower. This is near to Cambridge. Definitely not recommended!!!

Yes it would, thanks! Coincidentally I was just thinking somewhere between Peterborough and Norwich would be the ideal distance and give us a good spread of samples from across the country. If you do have the facility to send any, I'd obviously reimburse your costs.

@boilerhousegarage I live in Peterborough and own a 2018 phev Prius. Is Esso supreme likely to be 0% ethnol here, even after Esso has changed their advertising about this. I assume fuel sitting a few months in my tank would benefit with 0% ethanol

We'll know for sure soon, as coincidentally I was planning on heading either to Peterborough or Cambridge to get some Esso samples from that way. A subscriber sent be this sample from North Wales, so I was interested in seeing what we get on the East side of the UK. I think the UK's only ethanol plant is in either Lincoln or Norwich (can't remember) so that'll be interesting to see.
As hybrids use an Atkinson cycle on their combustion engines, fuel quality is actually quite important, so if Esso 99 is 93 there (the ethanol would benefit to boost the octane) you'll probably notice a rough transition from when your engine fires up from moving under electric drive--saying that, the Prius CVT is really well made, so it might hide some of the jerkiness. Generally on cars in regular use, having 2-5% ethanol in it will make little difference other than fuel economy.

That's great, looking forward to it. I appreciate your detailed reply. Now things are making with that information. Thank you

@@ashb8572 I think UA-cam "vanished" your question, but I saw it on my notifications.. I'd recommend Shell V-Power over all of them, however if I'm not letting my bias against BP get in the way, then there's nothing wrong with Ultimate at all and you'd best just go for the cheaper option. If there's zero ethanol, the mileage expectation will be the same.

@@boilerhousegarageIt will certainly be interesting to see the results from the Peterborough/Cambridge area!

Very disappointing again. Not only has Esso E5 has ethanol, the octane level is very poor. This would suggest Esso E5 is a sub standard fuel compared to others such as Shell V Power E5 and even BP which is only 97 RON. Very worrying with regard to Esso!

Thanks! Just to clarify, this Bangor sample's octane is being measured with the ethanol removed, so it would have originally been higher (5 more RON from 3% ethanol is questionable mind) so the ethanol would boost octane. It just shows that Esso aren't compensating for the loss of octane, and the general view from dyno tuners on Esso Synergy Supreme being crap seems to be a national thing, whether ethanol or not.

    Disappointing result!

It is. Esso "99" either has ethanol in some areas and others could potentially blow a hole through your piston for being way under its advertised octane.

@@boilerhousegarage Really appreciate these videos. I'm a long time lurker. I currently drive a motor that's tuned for at least 97RON, leaving me with little 'safety' buffer to the advertised 99; so Esso is something I definitely avoid...
