Cabo Verde has an incredible culture and its peoples are absolutely amazing. As a Portuguese, I really feel that relations between Portugal and Cabo Verde flow both ways. Portugal is also largely influenced by Cabo Verde in many areas, but probably music is on the top of that list. A country with a huge charisma!

Wow. Your video was a youtube suggestion since I'm from Cabo Verde and I'm so glad it did it because it was so well explained that I trust your research to get to know the other countries through your channel. Just a litte and humble observation. The well known dish is called cachupa (you said capucha). But with so solid information, I can say it is just a detail. You just gained a new subscriber. Nice work 😊
Hi! I am Cape Verdean living in the UK. Loved your video and hopefully more people will visit my lovely country as most people still don’t know where Cabo Verde is or heard about. Just a small correction though, the typical food is called “Cachupa” not “Capucha” and it’s just amazing, miss it everyday! Keep up the good work! Regards from London 🇬🇧
Cachupa is soo good. Depending on where you go it can be more like a soup or more like a hash. Still delicious either way. I would have loved for you to mention Brava - A Ilha Das Flores (the island of flowers) just to the west of Fogo. It is the smallest but most lush island. There are two micro islands near it that are sea turtle sanctuaries as well. For this reason a turtle is pictured on their coins (escudos). Another awesome thing is their coconut bread- different depending on the island, and how the dialects vary depending on the island with the northern and southern islands bearing distinct similarities within themselves. The islands are grouped in halves called Barlavento and Sotavento though I can't remember which was the northern/southern one or not.
Very nice, our biggest resource is definitely our people. Over there clubs run till the morning, and neighbors don’t get upset if you blast music lol. Deff the closest to a cultural shock I had when I moved to the US
As a Cape Verdean, I like my people , our hospitality and joy, even in hard times, the hot waters during all year, the good food, and good places to visit in the different islands!!

Congratulations! This is a very good and accurate survey. I hope you can make another video with more details, as there is a lot of information you can get about the country's History, Music, Literature and Traditions. Everybody pointed 2 negative notes about the spelling of "cachupa" (which we say "catchupa", in creole) and the picture of a church from The Azores. As a Capeverdian, I can say you did a good work. Hi, Paul. I am a subscriber of the Langfocus channel, it was a pleasant surprise to find this video. Congratulations, you did a pretty good job! You nailed it at almost everything. A few remarks, though: 1 - Traditionally, we consider that they are 10 islands, not 9, even if one of them is uninhabited. 2 - Please, correct from “Aristide” to “Aristides”. 3 - We cannot be sure if the only active volcano is the Pico do Fogo! According to geologists, for a volcano to be considered extinct it must not have activity for 10,000 years. The only records about volcanic activity in Cape Verde date from the 15th century. 4 - Please, correct from “capucha” to “cachupa” (IPA: [kɐˈʃupɐ]).

The music of Cabo Verde / Cape Verde was worth mentioning in more detail. It is absolutely wonderful and unique, combining the bluesy-ness of Portuguese Fado with African rhythms. Cape Verde's most famous export to the international music scene was the incredible Cesaria Evora, who you can see here performing one of her signature tunes, "Sodade": ua-cam.com/video/qx4z9V2hydQ/v-deo.html
the "bluesy-ness of Portuguese Fado" ?!? you do realize that Cape Verdeans are descendants of the people that created the actual blues itself. That is something that it definitely didnt come from the portuguese. But yeah Cesaria Evora is by far the most famous export.

lnteresting video, on a country one does not usually hear about. l knew about the country insisting on that its name always having to be said in Portuguese, which is ridiculous; similar to lvory Coast always wanting to be called Cote d'lvoire, in all languages. l still remember when Cape Verde became independent, when l was 11 years old.
Paul, to echo your comment about CV being a transport crossroads, many years ago I visited CV without setting foot there. I was on a South African Airways flight from Johannesburg to Atlanta and they stopped there in the dead of night to refuel - we weren't allowed to disembark. Interestingly, during the Apartheid period SAA used to refuel there on flights to Europe (due north) because most African nations banned them from flying over their airspace (for obvious reasons) thus SAA had to fly 'around' Africa instead of in a straight line. Hopefully I can return some day and actually get off the plane! Thanks for the interesting content.
Great video, just a little correction about Pico do Fogo: it's not the highest in Macaronesia since Teide volcano is 3715m. I love Cabo Verde and specially it's music
I had an amazing time watching your video! Thank you for making it! 😊 I'm from Cabo Verde and I've been following your channel for a couple of years. I'm sure you'll get the name right once you try some katxupa 😁😅 Another interesting thing about our country is, since we don't have many natural resources, there has always been a strong policy towards the development of human resources (it was one of our national hero's Amílcar Cabral's goals) - which partially explains our stable democracy and why you find Capeverdeans in important political positions in our diaspora. Cheers from Praia
One thing you left out is the reason, we that live in the Atlantic Hurricane basin, know all to well about Cabo Verde....as that is the origin point of the most powerful & destructive of the hurricanes each year.
1st gen American of Cape Verdean parents here 👋. Truly amazing video you've created. I think it's safe to say how accurate the video is by the only critique from other Cape Verdeans in the comments is the misspelling of Catchupa 😅 I'll start sending coworkers this video instead of Wiki when I share what my background is 👌

Just fyi: in Portuguese from Portugal and I'm assuming Cabo Verde, we don't pronounce the E at the end of words. Also, the O at the end of Cabo is pronounced like in the English word "boo". So it would be pronounced [kabu veɾð]
Yeah, but when I looked up the pronunciation of the name, there was an Anglicized pronunciation used by non-Portuguese speakers. So it went from the English translation to an Anglicized pronunciation of the Portuguese name.

lnteresting video, on a country one does not usually hear about. l knew about the country insisting on that its name always having to be said in Portuguese, which is ridiculous; similar to lvory Coast always wanting to be called Cote d'lvoire, in all languages. l still remember when Cape Verde became independent, when l was 11 years old.
Nice explanation about my country, just a correction: is catxupa ( in crioule ) our cachupa ( in portuguese ) !
Been there 3 years ago. Fantastic country with a fantastic happy people...
I'm a cape verdean from rhode Island. Other than the mis pronunciation of our national dish katchupa, u did a great job on this video! Good research!
Yes indeed it is like the Azores for us in Europe, but for us it is the heat waves that comes from the azores
Admiro teu trabalho. Parabéns
1st gen American of Cape Verdean parents here 👋.
Truly amazing video you've created.
I think it's safe to say how accurate the video is by the only critique from other Cape Verdeans in the comments is the misspelling of Catchupa 😅
I'll start sending coworkers this video instead of Wiki when I share what my background is 👌
Thanks! I’m glad you liked it (even though I messed up the name of CV’s national dish 😅).
I'm so proud of my heritage 🇨🇻🇨🇻
Syrian woman refugee wants to marry cape verdean man in order to get citizenship for humanity reasons

Yes 😊 I will regret saying “capucha” for the rest of my life 😄
I really like this channel because it's like if Geography Now kept to simpler, 10-minute videos like they did in the past.
Very informative. 😎👍

One of the most important ressource from agriculture IS Sugarcane , which produces sugar used in the local gastronomy and the most Genuine and Natural Rum in the World still hancrafted in a traditionnal way : The Grogue
Another great video Paul. Greetings from Mexico.
I’m currently in Cape Verde since I am Cape Verdean and I’m also from Boston, this is the first time I’ve seen people put so much thought into the country.
@@GEOfocusChannel you are very thorough.
@@GEOfocusChannel
your attention to detail is always pleasant, both here and in LangFocus
@@GEOfocusChannel I am Cape Verdian and you are pronouncing it correct.
You are pronouncing it correct . We say [ Kabu verd ] but It’s normal if you say “ Cabo verde “ like you’re saying
Glad to see you doing a video on Cabo Verde.I enjoy your other channel Lungfocus as well. You could do a video about Cabo Verde creole and its sister language papiamentu .
i´m from Cabo Verde
A small correction is not 9 islands, it is 10 islands but only 9 that are inhabited, 1 not inhabited (Santa Luzia) because it is a natural reserve in the country. the staple dishe is " catxupa/cachupa, not capucha.
thank you very much for choosing my country among many other options
Very informative video, thanks and love from India
