Do you have a local fish store that you like to support?
Here is a video of a visit to a small store that recently opened up: ua-cam.com/video/CUdTIjgHU88/v-deo.html
The picture of the dogg, the 80s school pic background, b/w effect - this might be your best video yet!
I remember my first trip to aquarium/fish store as well. My mom bought me a red oscar and 55-gallon tank with an aquaclear HOB. I have enjoyed the hobby ever since. I think it was 1987. Lol
I have a local pet store in San Rafael who has always gotten me the fish I want. I don't know where he gets them, but I've had great success. One of these days I want to venture to San Francisco again and visit a couple fish stores, just for fun! Have a great day. thank you for your great videos, too! I enjoy them.
I am so fortunate to be able to buy my fish from Aquarium Co-op. And before them I bought at another local store. I agree, local is best. They get to know you and that is part of the fun of being in the hobby, connecting with other fish nerds. Because as we know you really can't discuss fish with people not in the hobby, they just don't get it. The quickest way to quite a party is start talking about water parameters 😂 I still remember starting my first tank and going to my LFS, and the excitement I had when my parents took me. And that was back in the 60's!! Love this hobby and fish community.
I have a great relationship with my LFS. The owner and workers there are super friendly and knowledgeable. I’ve consigned fish with them, traded in hornwart, amongst other things. It’s a great thing for sure
My favorite local fish store is 2 1/2 hours away and it's worth it!!
My local fish stores owner his name is Steve and yes, I do have a rapport with him and have sold him fish lol great video, super true, that it’s important to support local fish, stores and businesses ❤
All the staff at my local pet store know me. I'm pretty much known as the crazy fish lady there 😂
I’ve been trying to find somewhere better to buy fish because local stores stock hasn’t been as good as it was a few years ago and I believe that’s mainly due to wholesalers quality declining (or at least the main issue that I’ve witnessed, other things contribute as well) so I’m looking into well known and widely trusted sources online since there’s not a lot of local breeders here. I haven’t bought fish in a while except for one occasion recently where I bought a ton of fish that ended up being sick. As far as local water, keep in mind an LFS may be using RO systems or filtering their water in some way that’s different than yours. They may also be adding things to it. They will be monitoring their water parameters more than you’ll be looking at yours. I’m hoping in a few years to get a small store set up for fish and reptiles so people have a quality store that they can trust! Running it to be the best that it can be won’t bring in as much profit as other stores do, but hopefully it will pay off in the quality of the animals and customers will no doubt recognize that. I’ve taken a step back from aquariums while still maintaining my existing ones and recently rekindled my desire to keep more fish and reptiles. Let’s hope my dream comes true :)
Great info and thank you for sharing
Agreed
Agreed 😊 I usually go to the little stores even though the chain stores in my area aren't terrible
My buddy actually just started a small fish store been trying to show him support and help promote his business etc
Sweet that's my dream someday

I’ve never kept fish, only dogs and cats, but I’ve thought about having an aquarium off and on but was always scared I’d do something wrong and kill them and feel bad. I know there will be a learning curve, but I think if I can handle hydroponics, I can handle this. I’ve been doing a lot of research and watching a lot of videos to learn. I’m definitely buying my fish and probably supplies from a local store instead of a big box store because I’m sure I’ll need their advice and want to support them. I’m willing to pay a little extra in exchange for that advice. Certain major online retailers with fast shipping, if you catch my drift, can’t give me advice specific to my situation.
I recommend a betta fish! They’re easy to take care off and i recommend a 5 gallon tank for them
Not only is our local fish store family run for decades, it's significantly cheaper than the big box franchise near me (in the UK). Usually the independent one is half the price of the chain. In the case of some desirable fish like betta, it is about 1/8th of the price. The downside it, it has significantly shorter and less convenient opening hours. Also the owners aren't getting any younger so I worry about what I will do if they ever retire
Shopping at my favorite local fish stores is always money well spent!
I work very part time at an LFS, and my favorite part is interacting with the kids! If I find out that the fish are for them, I do everything in my power to make the experience perfect for them.
This is awesome! We need more like you in the hobby!
@fishtroverts I was once explaining to a little girl the importance of water changes and she was very freaked out with the thought of touching fish water. When I had her convinced, she asked me how to do it. I looked her dead in the eyes and said, you have to stick your face in the tank, suck the water through her nose and spit it into a bucket. Her dad thought it was the funniest thing he'd ever heard.
I think your absolutely right, the fish stores have helthier anda much better selection of fish., not to mention munch mare knowledgable.
I remember my first pet fish as a kid back in the 80's. It was these two small goldfish I got at "Petland Discounts" on Liberty Ave in Queens NY. It was a total dump of a place. Back then they were all over NYC but I believe the entire chain of stores shut down for good a long time ago. There were dead fish all over the floor and the crickets used for the weird idiots who keep lizards for pets were crawling all over the place and some were even floating in the tanks. A cramped and disgusting place even more so in hindsight now that I've come to learn how much of a personality many types of fish can have. It's sad to think of so many likely jumping out of their dirty water tanks as a last resort and winding up drowning on a filthy floor in Queens all those years ago. It's the same scene you see at larger chains like PetSmart today - always dead fish in the tank, 'feeder' goldfish will be in overcrowded tanks devouring one another, crusted fish corpses on the floor, and let's not forget how they were caught throwing away LIVE fish and birds into their dumpsters time and time again, which to me is enough reason to never go to those stores again. IMO, pet store chains need to be shut down for good and only small, private businesses with knowledgeable, caring owners should remain.
Hahahaha Dogs!!! My wife and I had a great laugh about that :) getting ready to clean our fx4s. How log has it been foe you? ;)
I don’t have any local fish stores outside of petsmart 😢
Im pretty well known at my lcf. If they have rare fish hiding in their basement, they will let me see it before deciding to buy or not. Im about the swap 4 hillstreams for some rarer hillstreams because the owner thinks he got duped by the importer on them. The 4 hillstreams were bought a couple months ago too.
And then there's places like 6th Avenue Aquariums (in your town) that has terrible conditions but great selection and prices.
👍🏻👍🏻
Dans fish!!!
agreed!
In my experience my local had amazing fish for 15 years.. then the owner passed and a new person baught it all the fish were horrible quality… nowadays the local Petco near me has the best quality never get ich and they always live! Been shopping there for four years now after my local got re owned couldn’t be happier
Says the guy representing a company but using their own UA-cam channel....
