Ah, but most citizens in W40K likely don't how horrible it is to be under Chaos influence. They're likely uneducated and isolated workers slaving away as cogs part of the machine of the Imperium. All they know in life is work, no breaks, no fun, no individuality, and they want a break from all that, and that's what they see when Chaos gods or followers tell them of the benefits of joining their ranks and cults: a break or significantly better change from their miserable lives.
And who can blame them, when their entire lives they've told that the Emperor is their savior, yet doesn't save them or their loved ones from disease or death?

Taking a look at how life goes in chaos worlds it does not look any better for the ones at the bottom of the pile than it does in the empire.
well, it is accurate. the thing with Chaos is that in the degree as he said it it is rather tame, problem is that these desires in the case of Chaos escalate. More need for Pleasure, more knowledge, more war, holding tighter and tighter on life.
its not the basic concept of Chaos that is the problematic part. it´s the extremes.
Empire itself is not uniform entity, and the picture painted by the video of the empire is all about the worst parts of it.
While it ignores almost all the bad parts about chaos.

The main problem here is the Imperium's bureaucracy, which requires some serious unfucking.
What fascinated me way back when playing WH40k 2nd edition was the genestealer cults, various classes of hybrids and so forth. Emphasis around then was more on them inflitrating imperial worlds in subtle ways, more like chaos.
Finally a system where good vs evil is not the primary idea. I love how complexity is preferred to mere morality
Weird... pretty much being human is being a chaos worshipper. There should be a more logical explanation, it's really one sided for the loyalists.
Being human is being loyalist, chaos pushes everithing to MEGA EXTREME, like lets take simple small cigarete as example - you smoke 1-2 during break, its life for you, nobody gives a skimpy fuck about what you do. But every cigarete have a latin on it and fancy eagle logo on box, which you may or may not like. Chaos on the other hand allows you to smoke different cigarets, but THEY WILL MAKE YOU SMOKE SO MANY OF THOSE, THAT YOU WILL CHOKE ON BLOOD OR TURN INTO SOME HORRIBLE ABOMINATION (some shiity hard rock theme). Thats how it works.
Loyalists are completely fucked in the lore. Even Guiliman says this isn't the Imperium that the Emperor had envisioned and is currently seeking to change it. Right now the Imperium is an oppressive, theocratic socialist dictatorship where the common citizen gets shit on because the higher ups lack any sort of empathy whatsoever.
If they manage to survive long enough. Wonder how the lore progresses... I guess there will be a massive civil war where the Imperium gets divided, the corrupted vs the true followers who share Emperor's vision. Tau and Eldar will help but to satisfy their own goals while holding chaos back.
Unfortunately I think Chaos is too much of a unifying enemy for another civil war to break out. Also the imperial citizens have a very heavy metaphorical boot on top of them that prevents a lot of them from turning to chaos.

The problem with chaos is the fact that no matter what you originally join up for (relief from disease pain, knowledge, pleasure, more fightin') it inevitably leads to you going batshit bonkers as you get more and more depraved by digging deeper into the ruinous powers. You're most likely not going to be badass enough to become a daemon prince; more likely you'll become a mad cultist who's sacrificed quickly, or a jibbering pile of mutations, or some other horrible thing. And what you help contribute to in the best case is an anarchic society of destruction, and at worse a new daemon world where up is down, black is white, and everyone is a meat slave.
If people had more self control, maybe they'd be able to benefit from the chaos gods in some strange, chaos-based lawless commune where everyone rots/does magic science/fights/gets freaky in peace. But sadly in the grimdarkness of 40k, that's just not gonna happen. It's either one extreme or the other.
And why is it worse than living under rule of dead body that is treated better than anyone who is still alive?

Chaos offers the only potentially good ending in 40k; daemon princehood. Hell, you could even shoot for godhood if you have the ambition and cunning. Though you'll likely fail on both sides you actually have a shot at both.
It isn't all sunshine and rainbows. Princes of Slannash HAVE to spread pleasure and corruption. Just like Khorne's need to spread war and blood. The ones with the most independent freedom are Tzeench's but hes the most fickle so double edge sword.

The Imperium and Chaos represents the two ideological opposites of Absolute Law and Absolute Chaos.
Neither is very pleasant.
The best choice would be a balance of the two... an organized system (law) where the citizens are still given the freedom to decide about their destiny (chaos). Buuuuut that wouldn't be grimdark enough for WH40K fans, so I doubt it will ever be implemented.

I’ve noticed a trend. Chaos followers often grow powerful by living in ways appealing to their gods or even to other Warp entities they entreat with. The Chaos followers who get screwed over are those who make promises they can’t keep whereas the likes of Abaddon and other successful ones perform deeds and then ask for a reward so they can do a better job. Chaos doesn’t punish failure (though the more stupid of its commanders do). Chaos punishes failing to uphold your deals. But, it rewards upholding your end even without a deal. So, if you just get shit done and then ask for a reward then even if you fail you have nothing to worry about. Don’t get greedy and don’t get arrogant and Chaos is your friend. Even Tzeentch’s mutations are usually useful unless you piss him off, his dedicated worlds still grow their populations through natural methods after so he clearly doesn’t get too extreme.
Chaos isn't bad, it's the chaos gods that make it bad. If it was just an unknowable force you can draw upon like the Dark Side in Star Wars, it'd be a lot better, which is why Chaos Undivided would be my ideal faction for 40K among the humans.
