- Elif Şafak, acclaimed author of "The Bastard of Istanbul", says the rise in the numbers of female parliamentarians is not enough. And, she warns, recent statements by Turkish politicians - tellling women to focus on motherhood and not to laugh aloud in public - are counterproductive. BBC Arabic's Hanan Razek has the story.

Also, in the 2018 Presidential Elections in Turkey - one of the candidates who lead the Good Party - Meral Aksener - was a woman ! This makes Elif Safak's claim women are ''almost non existent'' in Turkish politics almost laughable.

It is simply not true to say women are almost non-existential in turkey, it would not be an accurate portray of turkey! My mom and many other women are more likely to be leaders of the families and relatives and the people i get to know in my area and also in various parts of turkish society too! Yea there are brutal unfair treatments for women but it doesn’t reflect the whole picture.

Ms Safak's claim ''women are almost non-existent'' in Turkish politics is factually incorrect. If anything, Turkey has around 15 percent of its parliamentarians being females, dozens of females serving as ministers over the decades and even a women Prime Minister in the 1990s. The number of female parliamentarians in Turkey is higher under the AKP than at any time in the past. Everyone is entitled to their views, but nobody is entitled to their own facts and it is most unfortunate the BBC has chosen to interview a lady whose facts are factually incorrect about women in Turkish politics.

she is not telling the truth, we have a lot of female representatives in politics more than some western countries! we have even had a femle president, tansu ciler for gods sake! she is not talking about politics she is talking about domestic issues, i.e. mens treatment of women in general at home, workplace etc which is a problem anywhere but making it sound like women are oppressed in turkey is a joke.

Give women reservation in parliament up to 50 percent and it would be equality for all.
