    here's and idea, if you already know this stuff, or you think it's too long, too wordy, find another video. as guitar players we have to realize that not everyone's skill level is up to ours. so take what you can use and move on. there's no sense bitching about his lessons, let the man teach, and if you think you can teach it better, make your own video. keep doing what you do man, you're helping a lot of pickers.

    I leaned this "method" of soloing and playing by watching VHS tapes of Stevie and Clapton and after a while I started noticing patterns in where they would solo based on what the key was. I spent many MANY hours watching and playing to figure this out back when VHS was still a valid format. It changed everything for me and would've LOVED to have had your video as a resource back then. My advice to up and coming players or to anyone just craving more out of their playing is to learn this and understand it because it'll be a game changer for you

    Eric, I played Bass for forty-plus years and let my guitar playing slide almost away, but recently have taken it back up again. (now, I'm letting the Bass slide a bit) You definitely opened my eyes and immediately showed me that it will help me learn all the notes on the neck, which is one of my goals, along with learning the pentatonic scales. I am looking forward to learning more from you. Thanks, Brother! Retired and well in Atlantic Beach, FL

    no joke man, I'm a self taught guitarist of 16 years, and I'm pretty good at writing songs but could never play improvisational riffs. I've looked for years for a video or somebody who can explain how to play up and down the neck without a bunch of confusing, music theory nonesense, and today I randomly found your video, this is such a huge help man THANK YOU!!

    Hi Erich, I an 75 have played guitar for 60 years, 45 as a pro lead guitarist, I have used this method from very early on and found it the best possible way, I expanded the system by playing around chords in the music and extensions of those. Here is a laugh for you...Some goon once said to a friend that I was searching up and down the neck for the right note, (Yes they are out there) This method as you know gives good light and shade to our playing. Its very nice of you to freely share with others this important method. Well Done

    Wow, this is amazing. I can't believe how many people responded to this video. Guitar has got to be one of the most difficult instruments to learn. Look at all the flack you got from people. Whew! I thought it was a good lesson some guitarists don't know. And all this stuff about theory vs. organic playing. Remember in the beginning there was no theory. It was all discovered on the fly, compiled and passed along. If it doesn't make you happy, don't do it. Peace!

    I started playing guitar at 10 and didn't start learning theory until I was 16 when I wanted to really dive into the theory and more understanding of music. being a music major in college really helped me in the theory in music. you don't need to know theory to play music, but it helps

      wolf you don't need theory to play music, but you need theory if you want to compose your own solos or songs. shortcuts are quick fixes that deter you from getting better or actually learning something. People need to understand guitar is like learning a language, or multiple languages really. learning a few words doesnt make you fluent. Shortcuts work fine till you visit the country of the language and nobody speaks your native language, then those shortcuts bite you on the bootee

    • @MrFlatulentOne
      @MrFlatulentOne 6 років тому

      @ Sage:
      I'm not Wolff nor an expert myself, but you'd want to learn a couple box techniques. What you probably consider 'shredding' is a mix of tremolo and sweep picking, with some tapping mixed in. Like all things guitar, you can learn what it is and how to do it in mere minutes, but take a lifetime to actually master it. Good luck!

    YGS, I have been only recently stated the “first 30” lessons and YOU, my friend are not only a master, but as I’m 41, you have inspired me to keep trying. I have attempted to take up the guitar several time and get into a rut, and believe I’m not getting anywhere, so give up. Doing the first 30 I feel I’m making progress consistently. If I were to win, would really love to be taking the rest of your lessons. As it would change my life more than it already has. As for the guitar, well I live in Australia, and have purchased an acoustic guitar already, so I would ask that you donate it to a deserving less fortunate person, in the hopes that taking up the guitar would change their life as well. Keep up the great vids an mentoring!

    Why do people act like music theory is like a certificate you get after you take a piano lesson? This video isn't about "skipping over music theory" at all, is about getting yourself more familiar with the fretboard by it doesn't help you conjure up new melodies/changes/etc. music theory is why x sounds good in terms of a compositional perspective, not "guitar proficiency". This video is informative in a way but the title is misleading as hell

      Kaz Matsui you forgot the how. music theory explains why it sounds good and how the piece was composed. in a way it is misleading, but all he did was break down motiffs and repetition. Those two take a big part in improv theory. but i agree with you. everyone needs to stop taking short cuts and learn theory.

      Imelda Berumen Not learning theory is not a short cut. Theory is really an option, not necessary. It's a good tool. The way he explains it is one way, but there are other approaches. If someone wants to learn theory they should. If they don't, they don't have to. They can know how it was composed in a different way than theory.

    Been self taught on all instruments and this truly helped me out in developing my style for guitar. This is kinda funny but I'm 39 and I'm just now learning notes on the guitar, been playing since I was 14 but never went to a lesson. That in itself has been a large part of how I play now but a new door has opened and suddenly I find myself wanting to know scales, octaves, keys and notes, told you it was funny. It all started when I bought a synthesizer and a keyboard. So yeah man thanks a lot for the very clear lesson, much appreciated. May God bless all your endeavors. -KC Buckler Psalm 30:1-3

      Sean Conroy couldn't agree more. Started playing and had a 3-piece band until we found a singer. Started playing rhythm and then went to bass because we couldn't find a bass player and was always trying to follow the guitar player, who was and still is exceptionally good. I'm still asking him questions once in while. Love to play acoustic when a few people are around, but don't have that confidence in my ability to play well.

      dude, I disagree, if you assume that this is all somebody knows, sure, but I've never learned technical theory, I just seem to have an ear for music and note patterns that sound good, and my friends who know theory constantly tell me "do you even know what you are doing right now? you are using advanced theory and don't even know it" I'm sure I'd benefit from learning more theory (mostly save me time writing songs! lol) but feeling out every notes over the years has helped me write unique music that sounds unlike a lot of other guitarist I hear out there. (though the irony here is I will never know JUST HOW unique they really are, not knowing music theory)

    A great lesson. Knowing music theory is great but it can be very confusing. Using this lesson and others like it can help you to, all of a sudden, understand what the theory is trying to 'teach' you. This lesson is almost teaching the theory without you realising it. Then when you do try to learn the theory it can all fall into place much easier. Techniques like this really helped me.

    Hi, there ! First time viewer with a first time guitar and first the first sensations of trepidation and "fear" are setting in at the not so first time age of 62. Picked up myself a '73 Les Paul Deluxe in memory of Les, who I had a "connection" with regarding his 87th birthday. Anyway, here I am. Got a guitar, got a Boss JS-10 eband, got a Fender Princeton Chorus amp, new strings, and a desire to play.
    What I need to make sure of is to take little , little steps so as to set the stage for experiencing little , little successes. My second concern, after the fear of not being able to succeed in this journey, is losing interest. Now's the time to go there. And maaaaaan, will I need help !
    Les will inspire me, and we can laugh together . I hope to gather a great amount of information and assistance from this site. It feels comfortable here, and comfort is cool ....... Peace from the Mohawk Valley in NYS

      Pick up your guitar and do this with me. Play the 5th fret of the low E string. That note is A. Now play the 7th fret of the D string. That is also A but in a higher octave. To make this simple, playing the same note in different octaves means playing it with a higher pitch (7th fret on D string) or lower pitch (5th fret on A string). Now play the A string open, no fretting just let it ring. Note that that is the same octave as the 5th fret on the E string.
      In non-string instruments you typically cant play the same note in the same octave in multiple positions. On the guitar you can. Thats all, dont think about it too hard because it isnt more complicated than that.

    Well it an interesting concept - go back to your primal organic roots and just find out how to play by ear. Experimenting by going up and down the string and make a slight mental note of whether the distance you traveled was one fret or two frets distance.. The nitty gritty of sitting own and memorizing the notes is in fact boring and irritating and takes a lot of time and effort to do so not many people are interested in it - hence the huge massive amount of people who only play by ear. You remember the old joke "How do you get a rock guitarist to turn his amp down?" - "Put some sheet music in front of him!" At some point you do realize that you need to know more about what you are doing - whether that means scale patterns, note names or shape locations. Even the most crude musicians find some way to write down or memorize things they come up with - from just writing four slashes to indicate 4 beats or even people like Allan Holdsworth drawing a Circle with a Plus sign in the center of it to indicate a MinorMaj7 chord - undecipherable to everyone except HIM (until he explained it). When I was a small kid in the 60's I wrote 10 slash marks on the wall above my radio in my room to memorize the riff to "Sunshine of your love." really crude and stupid - but what else was I supposed to do being 8 years old? So really whatever works - up until you graduate from being a white belt and start thinking you have a thirst for MORE info!

He played in an couple albums with KISS, Built guitars for Peter, Paul and Mary, Prince had one and dedicated 2 pages in his autobiography about my dad, and many others. Anyway, he was proof you don't have to read music, though I'm sure it does make things easier at times.

      If you followed the system of tuning each string up a fourth from the string below, the B string would become a C string and the top E string would become an F string. There's nothing wrong with that tuning, it's just unconventional. Some chords and scales would become harder to play, and some would become easier. The standard tuning has evolved probably thru the Blues. Another popular tuning is DADGAD, which is used a lot in Folk music (and Folk-Blues).

      Maybe it has something to do with getting the 1st and the 6th strings to have the same notes in the same positions on the fretboard? Because the B note on the 6th string 7th-fret is now 5 half-steps away from the B note on the 5th string 2nd-fret.

  • @MrBuzzzzz
    @MrBuzzzzz 7 років тому +11

    You claim that people will be able to play all over the neck and do not need to know any music theory. You then start talking about the guitar being tuned to 4ths with the exception of the B string and you even mention a Major 3rd. I am afraid your students have no chance of understanding you already if they do not know music theory. I also have no idea how they are supposed to target chord tones at the end of their phrases if they know nothing about music theory. They will be fumbling around the scale shapes targeting 4ths half of the time because they have no idea what chord tones even are. I spend a great deal of time trying to get my students to warm up to the idea of music theory so they can actually grow as a guitarist and learn to target notes properly. When you post a video like this, you are doing the opposite of what so many of us are trying to accomplish. You are basically telling people not to bother with theory and that is exactly what they want to hear because the new generation has become ridiculously lazy. Way to go. You are assisting them in becoming even more lazy. NOBODY should learn a musical instrument without learning music theory. It is like being a carpenter and never learning how to read the tape measure. The internet has completely destroyed guitar and we have a whole generation of kids out there now who do nothing but print off tablature and blast out the notes as fast as they can, thinking that is guitar playing. This video further enforces that idea and I think you are doing way more damage than good. To anyone reading this comment, PLEASE learn music theory. There is absolutely no substitute for understanding what you are playing. At the very least, learn what intervals and chord tones are. You will always suck if you do not unless you are one of those very fortunate people who is born with a really good ear. The title of this video made me cringe.

      The internet destroying guitar statement is so astonishingly false, it's actually laughable. It has put a lot of teachers out of business I am certain but learning material has NEVER been more accessible than it is now. You can literally learn as much or as little as you want but all the material is there. Learning guitar is like learning anything else, you can immerse yourself with it or just learn enough to play a few chords around a campfire. To use your carpenter analogy, is learning to read a tape measure necessary to hammer a nail? Not everybody wants to play an instrument for a living, maybe they just want to have fun with it..

    I played guitar most of my life, and it was a very good lesson; for me i had fun, like i was 16, without stressing about other things. Just to play was enough for me. Will watch more vids.
