Using an actual engineering degree to play Bridge Constructor Portal...

- Bridge Constructor Portal is bridge building game that adds Portal style puzzle to the mix, and I'll be seeing if my real world professional engineering skills help me solve them (like it definitely did with Poly Bridge 2... Right guys, right!?)
Yes, the title is a parody of RTGame's video title!

I remember back in college in the early '00s, there was a bridge program we used that I believe was called the West Point Bridge Constructor, or something along those lines. It was an actual bridge simulator with real materials and costs and I think there was even a contest to build the cheapest bridge that still worked. Anyway, it would be interesting to see if that is still available somewhere and what a real Civil Engineer could do in that program.
Make a bridge which intentionally collapses when the right amount of pressure is applied, and able to be remotely triggered via pistons.
Yes! We had this in our highschool CAD class. Had to design our bridge on CAD then design on this simulator to see whose design was most efficient
Seems cool
yeah, my brother used that program in his engineering class this year
I wanna look at this tool
When life gives you lemons, you make life take the lemons back. I don’t want your goddamn lemons.
cant believe he didn't get it the first time
Burn life's house down, with the lemons!
Matt needs to hear that amazing rant
BURN YOUR HOUSE DOWN!! WITH THE LEMONS!!
Demand to see life's manager!
That's also how I imagine Matt makes these videos: he sits behind his desk with a hard hat on.
In front of a computer that is not plugged in, we are all in his imagination.
Minus the "hat." Wink.
I'm convinced
@@205badger3 can confirm, I am in your imagination
@@205badger3 and your walls
The problem with trusses in this game is that the standard material stretches a fair amount. Which compresses the middle truss, along with transferring the entire bridge load to it. Hence why under trusses usually work better (the game does not mention them though).
Edit: Oh, he made one!
yea everything squishes in this game, been a bit since i played it tho
that made me quit the game after a while, those damned squishy inconsistent bridges would have been the death of me
@@AMan-xz7tx Friend of mine gave up in the level-40s I think, same problem basically; she could spend half an hour minutely adjusting ONE intersection and the game wouldn't even be consistent.
Pontifex is a great bridge building game from the early 2000s and someone else mentioned Armadillo Run it's a great puzzle game where you have to get a little armadillo from point A to point B using a wide variety of materials
fuck yeah bump for Armadillo Run
Pontifex's sequel Bridge Construction Set is good too. It has a cool 3D support building mechanic
This was a triumph
I'm making a note here:
huge success.
It's hard to overstate my satisfaction.
Aperture science
We do what we must because we can
For the good of all of us except the ones who are dead.
But there's no sense crying
Over every mistake.
You just keep on trying
Till you run out of cake.
And the Science gets done.
And you make a neat gun.
For the people who are
Still alive.
I love the basic portal game. So Portal bridges is super awesome
“Ah, a new game! Looks like RCE might play this one reasonably, for a change…”
Literally puzzle 3:
“I just found the middle mouse button!”
*Absolute chaos ensues*
Ahhh yes. Of course 😂😂😂
?
I want to see more of this, mostly because there are some levels later on that I need help with 😅
This game WILL make his brain hurt, so much more than hydraulics.
@@toastghost4320 he is still going to have better solutions than I could come up with in some cases
This game was SO GOOD when I played it. Makes you feel great when you get through the later levels, they're hard! Love to see this on this channel!
You and you great editor are the only guys on youtube that actually make me laugh out loud, Thank you for being here! And I also learn something on the occasion
Loved the portal games and I’d forgotten that this one existed. Can’t wait to see you play more of it.
As a former forklift operator, I really dig the passengers on this. 😄
Hey RCE, you should make a series about normal portal and portal 2, and maybe then about a mod called portal stories MEL, which is like portal 2 but much more difficult!
would be interesting to know if they added fatigue damage: you could get the amplitude of each of the cycles and assume some material properties and an S-N curve and that would be all you need
As a suggestion I leave you this one: Armadillo Run. As a bonus to the genre it even has rockets! Quite old but aged like wine
PLS play more Bridge builder games, i'd love to see em !
This is my favorite bridge building game. I am glad Matt is now playing it.
I love this game, so glad you desided to play it!
“When life gives you lemons, don’t make lemonade. Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don’t want your damn lemons, what the hell am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life’s manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I’m the man who’s gonna burn your house down! With the lemons! I’m gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!”
- Cave Johnson, founder and CEO of Aperture Science
I'm actually surprised it's taken you this long to play this one. So hyped now!
"Bridge Builder Racer" was quite fun. You have to build a bridge and drive the car on your own to get the flag.
"Bridge Constructor: The Walking Dead" was fun because you have a little bit of lore within the game and if you watched TWD it is even better.
Ever play World of Goo? It's not quite a bridge builder but it's very Poly Bridge-ish
World of goo is great
Yes! Yes! Yes! Please play through this completely! I got stuck on the last level and need help...
11:01 "Get in"
GeoWizard vibes right there XD
RCE: 0:04
Hydroneer: am I a joke to you?
The only bad thing about this game is how short it is. Keep it up!
I'd love to see you play Carried Away, it isn't really a bridge builder but it's very much in the same genre. The aim is to make ski lifts!
I'm honestly surprised that you've never played this before. It seems like it would be right up your alley.
this is the first (maybe, i don't have a great memory so) game you've played that i now want to go get, 10/10
that is a lie, i do remember buying like mini motorways and whatnot
Yes, I want to see you complete futuristic bridges in the future! Please play more so we can see how you handle the turrets. Thanks!!
gotta play the OG bridge building game - World of Goo
its so satisfying to see the convoy mode with all those forklifts jumping around
Oh god these are old memories of this game but YES ABSOLUTELY. Please do more I love your bridge building games they are my favourite aside from Transport Fever.
Yes!
I have requested this, almost bought it you relatively recently too :)
Great to see, can't wait for more :D
I think at this point I could apply to be a structural engineer and for experience I can put down “watching Matt play Polybridge 2 and Bridge Constructor portal” and I’ll be fine.
Also Matt would be my reference 😆
0:35 “Make life take the lemons back. GET MAD, I DONT WANT YOUR DAMN LEMONS, WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH THESE!?”
11:27 people who don’t know 😊 people who know ☠️
I also request the Portal Proficiency as you can create your own portals
Makes a nice change from Polybridge, but goes back to what made you successful. More, please! :D
I started played long ago (a year xd) and I'm now at half of the DLC with the base game completed with all the convoys, and I know quite a bit about this game's physics
The last level's convoy didn't work because you dangled the slope from the bridge, where other vehicles were driving, and it made it shake differently and it's why the first vehicle did not make the jump
Moral: if a bridge works with one vehicle but not with the convoy, stop dangling from other bridges
This was so great to see. I feel like the oddball here, having played hundreds and hundreds of Portal Bridge levels, but disliking Polybridge. Except RCE vids, of course. Boosh.
I was really excited to see you play this. I've been watching your videos of polybridge for a while now but the playstation doesn't have it, only bridge constructor. I tried to follow your engineering ways but the game really doesn't work the same way 😅
Pontifex - old but gold! (Pontifex 2)
Bridge it (or bridge it 2)
The (Real) Engineer make stuff like this. Busshhh, Busshhh + Like it ! = . . . BOOOOOM!
World of Goo is an oldy but really great. I think you'd really enjoy it.
Soo glad u changed the schedule of ur upload 1 hour earlier than b4
Wait if things look nice it's architecture. BRIDGES LOOK NICE. I NEED ANSWERS
Ahhgggg
Being in Statics and watching these videos is fun because I’m like oh yeah trusses I can do those calculations
I need to watch RCE play Portal and Portal 2.
I've been wanting you to play this for so long, thank you.
I'd love to see Matt play the old Incredible Machine / Incredible Toon games. Make some Rube Goldberg contraptions.
Yes yes yes! I thought you had played this already but damn, now I am excited to see this games full campaign!
I have to check if I have the dlc
A taller truss has better leverage and therefore can support the same weight with less force through the member. Essentially you are supporting the bridge by resisting the moment gravity applies to the bridge about the endpoints and therefore having a longer moment arm in your truss allows it to support more weight. If my understanding of the physics is sound, being equilateral offers no advantage
"Companion cube: it's like the Paddy of the portal world."
If only he knew what happens to every single companion cube after the test.
Nice Game I definitely want another Video about that
I love this, keep it coming!
You gotta do a portal play through. I play it often just for the dialog lol
RCE you need to try satisfactory. Incredible game about automation and logistics.
I believe you would love it.
7:50 . My man reacted like a nine year old 😂
"that guy is shaking his head, like 'who put this engineer in charge?'"
Good question😂
If this is how bridge building in Aperture Laboratories looks like, then God knows how it would work in Black Mesa
when life gives you lemons, give 'em back. like why are they free? are they mouldy? are they poisoned?
I think the issue with your first truss is that the bridges in this game are saggy, and you couldn't afford for the bridge to sag at all without it melting in the acid. If you had arched the road surface to pre stress the bridge, I bet it would have been fine.
I think that this is the latest thing Matt's addicted to being addicted to.
There's a walking dead version of the game you should check out as well as a standard game that's similar to poly bridge, but probably not as realistic
I enjoyed that they added the kind of combat element to that one. I think it's still free in Play Pass.
He does a bridge review in every game except for the bridge building games
We need a cw McCall convoy cover for the next time you play this game
Definitely play more. I love this game.
I'd only sanction this game if we had a scoreboard and/or examples with the strongest shape
Thanks RCE for making me want to revisit this game in my Nintendo Switch library
I really want to watch this episode, but I also want to just play this myself without spoilers... I'll be playing this game thinking WWRCED the whole time
Great game! This is like poly bridge on oppioids
One goes in and another goes out. thats how portals work.
did you know when RCE was a child he wanted to be an architect
Day 180:Dear Matt,
I have a very good video idea
Gather all your editors and make them all have a fight on like a PvP game (e.g. Minecraft,Rust,Ect,ect...) And see who is the best editor and is worthy of the rank of a classified engineering. From me.
Please add this game to your content rotation! I really enjoyed watching.
If you think Forklifters are fat, you should see a spoonlifter. I screamed
Dark blue???? That’s purple!!! 5:00
Hey Mat, play some of Zachtronics games, I think something like Spacechem (you are a engineer in that game) and Infinifactory would be awesome
On some random Thursday, you should do a throwback to "Armadillo Run"
If life gives me lemons, I can do some mighty fine lemon cookies... no incinerator though, the temperature is too hot and would just ruin the biscuits...
I would definitely like more Bridge constructor portal videos
FINALLY!
I Love portal, and I've played this a ton
Definitely want to see more of this one :D
Aperture Science: Making life take the lemons back since 1947.
It does look like a great series
Anybody remember Armadillo Run? I had an exe file of it back in the day; I'd love to see RCE play it.
Yeah, that's a good one.
A little jank by modern standards, but worth a play.
Hey RCE,
In your next video, i'm curious about your thoughts of NASA/Boeing's project, "SUGAR Volt."
I think you may even have your next bridge review!
Cheers,
P-NC
Matt, have you not played portal 2?
You didn't recognize the Lemons quote!
this was great! look forward to more!
Definitely poly bridge 3 when it comes out!
I hope Matt continues to play this.
I just spent 3 hours playing this game and then was thinking if RCE had played it yet so I searched it up and here I am.
I loved this game which I had and still have so could you make a series as I would like to see you play levels very high like up to level 40 or so as they get very fun
you should try: When Ski Lifts Go Wrong!
I cannot believe you didn't know what to do when life gives you lemons
8:48 *kills over half the people
“Everyone made it!”
Back in the day I loved playing Cargo Bridge, unfortunately it is a flash game, so it's tricky to run currently.
Yessss! Need more of this RCE
