Wow, I've seen people on UA-cam try to grow orchids in semi-hydro and normally the orchids are surviving but not thriving like yours! They look amazing!!! I tried growing orchids in these self watering vases, but I used their own media, which came pre-fertilized, it scorched the plants and killed the new roots 😭
sorry to be so offtopic but does anyone know of a way to log back into an Instagram account..? I was dumb lost the account password. I appreciate any tips you can offer me
@Nova Robert thanks for your reply. I found the site on google and Im in the hacking process atm. Takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Gorgeous, gorgeous phalaenopsis orchids you have!!! I also just love your accent, lol. Beautiful job, though. I'm just a beginner w/orchids, I only have two so far so, I really appreciate your tips and experience you're sharing w/us. God bless you!😇
Thank you! Oh I definitely make some pronunciation errors, someone corrected me on Cattleya recently but I can't stop myself now 😂🤦♀️ It's harder to un-learn! It's good to know they aren't too noticable 🙂 Hope you are keeping well!
Loved that! They look great and your tip on putting sh like holes in these pots is super valuable to me because now I can also use some set up like this. :) my succulents love it as well.
Only downside is you can't then see the roots! but sometimes when they get this big, all the good self watering options involving inner clear pots are difficult 😅 So glad to hear your succulents are doing well! I need to try my desert roses next! 😉
Beautiful, beautiful orchids. Bright green leaves and so healthy. Wow beautiful. What fertilizer do you use. Is there a video regarding the type of environment Phalanopsis like.
I use rain mix, I grow them under LED lights, in general they like good light but not so much sunlight as to heat the leaves, they're relatively heavy feeders compared to some orchids, and warm temperatures, ideally bretween 18-30C :-)
@@TheOrchidRoom My full size don't but my mini phals like to send out aerial roots. Funny, I don't believe I have ever purchased a phal, except 3 minis from the death rack at Lowe's, because people give me theirs when they quit blooming.
Hi Annabel, Watched this with great interest as I have a phal which has loads of aerial roots and one coming through the flushing hole. Although it seems very happy, I thought I should pot it in a larger pot? I think I heard you mention when repotting the phal into the pink pot that it was ok for the roots to go into the reservoir as it was already transitioned. Have I got that right or should I keep the roots above the reservoir when potting up.
Always amazes me how well phals grow in leca for growers like yourself ... me? 👎🏼 I just said goodbye to another one yesterday ... 🤷♀️ in Swahili the word is sijui, meaning I don’t know 🤷♀️ it’s slow adaptation, or none at all in my case. Yours look soooo beautiful! 🤩
Sijui soinds like such a nice word though 😂 I may have to find a place for it in everyday conversation 😄 It's crazy how environments that seem similar, can have such different effects on how we grow. I would have thought yours would love it in your warmer (more humid?) climate! Fernanda's orchids and succulents also commented that she struggled with phals in SH I think. It's not you! There must be some other factor we don't anticipate as growers? My phals are the only ones that don't even care about the dry layer in SH here 🤔🤷♀️
The Orchid Room it’s a great word for sounding like you, you know... intelligent, when expressing you don’t know something! 😆 I’m hell bent on getting my phals to do better. The spikes, on some, once long enough, will come off. Others are rooted well, but their new leaves are small / a fraction of size they should be 🥴🤦♀️ summer bloomers are doing well as are the minis that I still have (said goodbye to my favorite mini a few weeks ago) ... so... it’s 🎢🎡 with that lot 🤪
The Phal with the curling leaves, this is a trait of Phal gigantea, so it may be in the parentage somewhere. My Phal Gigabell always grows new leaves that are curled at the end but they straighten out by the time the leaf is fully grown.
Oh yes I have a primary gigantea hybrid that does this! I also have a gigantea but after having it 6 months it refuses to grow another leaf. It's trying for some roots 😅 this NoID complex hybrid phal is spotted from what I can remember so there could well be some gigantea way up there in the parentage.
@@TheOrchidRoom gigantea is not a rapid grower, that is for sure. It likes brighter light than other Phals, so maybe increase the light if you can? They also take a while to settle into a new environment.
Your Phals look great! Tell me, do you make sure they have water in the reservoirs at all times or do you water and allow them to dry? My environment is dry, summers are warm and winters are 60 degrees Fahrenheit. My Phals seem to lose roots when I keep constant water in The reservoirs.
Hi! They're in semi hydro so reservoirs are full at all times. Not sure about conversion to Fahrenheit but I make sure the orchid room stays above 18C. Moist environments and clay media lead to cooling of the root zone- for hot growers like phals this will result in loss of roots as you say. So it's important to keep them warm if they're going to be constantly moist in order to avoid root loss.
Hello 👋🏻 What kind fertilizer are you using? Any recommendation for tap water? As my collection is growing I’m trying to find a powder fertilizer because I think would be more economic. Thank you in advance 😊
Hi! I use rain mix- here's a link to my video discussion on fertiliser ua-cam.com/video/ux9WzRnMZmg/v-deo.html . MSU is a great formula if you live in the US. Both are designed for rain or RO water to give good calcium and magnesium values. However, these are found in tap water, so using these mixes would depend on the TDS of your tap water? Bear in mind that tap water high in dissolved solutes isn't ideal for orchids, as there will be excess salts that accumulate around the roots and can contribute to root burn. Depends heavily on your tap water and the type of orchid though.
I’m in Germany and I can’t find any powdered formula.😔 My water TDS is 325 and so far I haven’t kill none of my orchids 😄 The liquid formula that I’m using from orchideen garden works really well but getting expensive as my collection got quite big after I found you ladies and gentlemen videos 🥰
@@suemay2955 The only powdered formula I can really recommend from experience is rain mix, which is what I use in the fertilising video above and for all my orchids, You can buy direct from the source which is Akerne orchids, I believe they are in Belgium so shipping should be cheap. Ive ordered from them before and even to the UK shipping is very reasonable. You could give it a go and see how your orchids respond but your TDS will be very high with any fert added to 325ppm- I'd start off with low amounts and see how your orchids go, you can always increase.
I'd reflect that question back at you and say why leave them loose if they will be equally happy in a pot? They attach to walls if left out, damaging paintwork, go into each others pots as shown here which makes picking one orchid up impossible... In nature they don't grow potted, but I couldn't manage 400 orchids mounted in a UK home 🤷♀️
Hi Annabel, very interesting video, I am learning more things about semi hydro. Is it true that when switching from pine bark to leca most "bark-adatpted" roots will die and will eventually be replaced by new "leca-adapted" roots ? Will this process place the orchids at risk of dying ? Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
A store called In-excess which is like a discounted hardware/garden store. I'm not sure if they might just be in the south though? Their website is terrible unfortunately, or it was last time I looked, so I don't think they update stock or anything. They seem to get cheap branded products in to sell on in bulk (sometimes they even have B&Q labels and the old prices still on them 😂 )

I think this is the funniest orchid video I ever saw :))) And you had business spoiling their fun :)))
They should learn to respect eachothers personal space! :-D They won't though... you just know they'll find a way into eachothers pots again!
Great job! Like you said, the environment makes a huge difference. You grow phals great in leca with self watering and in my environment they die....

Do you mean LECA? The potting medium?
Gotta be it. I wondered the same thing....the what are those little beads/balls all thru the roots.
Can another medium be used if I can't find leca?

@@jokennedy2943 yeah they're ridiculous, this brand is emsa aqua comfort casa 22cm. I bought them for £2.95 but think they are 10x that on Amazon.
