I was convinced that this swap will be boring as hell, but damn this AR2 swap became one of the most sophisticated swap on the planet. 2AR is the new K.
@@steveodorito keep in mind the k series has more aftermarket support and R&D than the 2AR, once people start to get their hands on the 2ar, it'll eventually become the k series killer.
@@VinceroAlpha People had said this about the 20V 4AG but lack of parts and cost to develop/buy those parts made everyone build out a 16V 4AG with 20V ITBs. I'd rather build my car with support today rather than for hopes of parts and support in the future.

Ben wanted to do this as an OEM+ style build so we're only revving it to 7600RPM. If you go check out on my channel you can see me revving them a bit higher with aftermarket valve springs.
@@FrankensteinMotorworks question for you, Darton makes semi-deck sleeves for 2az motors, do you know of any company that makes them for the 2ar ? I have a standard 2ar-fe block laying around but was always hesitant to tamper with them cause i like to turbo my vehicles (5-10psi, never more) and was always afraid of cracking the "thin" cylinder walls. Love your vids and awesome job on the MR2!
@@xoriatmike6857 I'm pretty damn sure that Darton would easily make some sleeves for this motor but go look at Papadakis' teardowns. The stock block is pretty damn strong as-is and there's no way you'll run into any issues at 5-10psi. the tC guys regularly push more boost than that on an unopened motor.
3SGE/GTE are the best, also in Aus lots of people are starting to use 3RZ FE out of hilux , they can make HUGE power and being big bore have great bottom power
The 2ZZ has a lot of potential if you get it built by the right people but getting k20 horsepower out of it is rather expensive compared to a Honda engine.
Rewatch this build, look at all the shit they had to do to it to make the engine viable. Now think about how you don't need to do any of that with a K24. This swap is a novelty. The 2AR is not a performance engine. When you put that HP rating into context it isn't even making 1HP per Liter. When you finally try to get legit HP out of it the limitations of the internals and head design will become clear.
The 2 video a week is so good! Helps me stay engaged in some of the build instead of having to wait a whole week for one build video that I will forget
I'd really like to see a fair comparison with mark's 270hp configuration vs his 2gr swap. I'm interested in the cost, finishing weight, and difficulty aspects as well as final HP numbers
I can't post pictures to a youtube comment but if you reach out i'm happy to share dyno charts and discuss the details of both of these on the exact same dyno. But in short, the 2GR still makes more power and has 40% more displacement so it will of course make a pile more torque. Keep in mind, even while i own all the parts to make a 2GR V6 swap in a spyder i still race with the 2AR I4, i really believe it's a better motor for the platform. Depending on how you plan on using it you may be better off with the 2GR but most will be perfectly happy with the 2AR and it's certainly a significantly easier swap.

We've been really successful nationally(reigning champion and 2nd place 4yrs running). We've been talking about running SSM in a spyder with either motors. The low end torque, top speed in 2nd gear, and weight penalties really matter to us. That's where we wonder if it's worth the 2gr at the cost of weighing alittle more as well as changing the weight distribution even more
Little bit of Camry, little bit of tC2, and hint of Haltech spice is very nice! I kinda want to see what a GR86 would've been like with this type of engine 😏
Yeah, i have all sorts of configurations of 2ARs with dyno charts form 175lb*ft all the way to 206lb*ft. This thing flows well at the bottom and at the top end. VVT-I is pretty awesome for that.
Always like watching these cause you guys actually go through what you’re doing and why, instead of just going through it super fast and showing the end product. Makes it way more personal and feel like it’s your own build. One of my favorite people to watch on here truly.
Cant believe that's the sound of a 2AR-FXE which doesn't even revs beyond 5500rpm when it's in a hybrid configuration now this thing sounds like a mix between a tuned 2ZZ and a 3S-GE and ofcourse the power it's making is I never expected it would make that easy
Beautiful sound! I bet this MR2 Spyder is so fun on the track. Seems like a lot of work and $$$ for 200hp to me but NA racecar right. I would love to see a low volume 8-12psi lil spooly snail on this engine and closer to 300hp tho
I don't think there's a better engine than the 2gr for street driving in the 3.5L displacement. You have power everywhere, it's relatively light and simple bullet proof engine.
@@chE3z1 Oh I am fully aware, the 2GR is a barely closeted monster but I'm more of a 4cyl guy courtesy of my addiction to Toyota coming in the form of an All-Trac. I will say, my sister owns a Sienna and even in that boat the 2GR does not waste any time.
The MR-S really is an example of a car that doesn't benefit from ludicrous amounts of power. Like, you could fit a crazy build in there with 500+ HP, but you'll just be going off the track sideways that much faster. I think around 300 is probably the most you can reasonably hope to use in that car unless it eats a really heavy engine.
Good job guys! for suspension upgrades and aero you guys might want to check "techno pro spirit shop tour" as a reference. He emphasize on the car balance of the rear. i don't know much about the compatibility because he used 2zz.
heat soak from the forward exhaust. try to vent that better, try to get a box from side intake to engine air filter. try to ventilate engine bay better somehow? bigger holes in the lid and the rear?
Unfortunately the MR2's strut tower in combination with the 2AR's timing cover means you're going to have a hard time getting a belt to a supercharger. You could do it with some kind of jackshaft configuration but it would not be straightforward.
I'm a glasses wearing sweaty boy myself so get a fan in the shop please I was feeling it for Marc This is pretty cool tho, can we get a cost break down like the STI and other cars you've done?
Not a fan of the exhaust exiting towards the cabin then having to go under the oil pan. I know I'm nitpicking but it's nice that kswaps and ZZ motors send the exhaust towards the rear without having to cross the pan. I'm going to assume that the 2AR is much cheaper than going K. The cost will make this an overall win. The car also stays all Toyota

This is a cool swap. Usually, the go to swap for the 3rd gen MR2 is the 2zz ge, so it's nice to see something unique.

I had a 91 Turbo MR2 with some light mods, back in the day guys were doing Supercharged V6 Tacoma engine swaps that I had always wanted to do.
This dude is by far one of my most favorite builders ever.

I daily a 17 RAV 4 with the 2ARFE, it's a non hybrid. This gives me major ideas for a pretty fun reliable sport SUV.
