I think a mid sized city is best. I went to Japan this spring and found some surprisingly quiet areas in Tokyo, which I liked. but my favourites were Atami and Kamakura. Atami is hilariously steep and from Kamakura you can get lucky and get Fuji views with Enoshima. (or get tackled by a crow, because you thought you were save to eat your onigiri)
Obviously it would be rare as you are TOKYO Portfolio, but I would be thrilled to see more videos about properties in other areas of Japan, particularly in other places in the Kansai region, such as Osaka
The way western and Japanese is blended in this house is one of the best examples I've ever seen. Usually the divide in function is a lot more obvious. This house just flows like it's all natural.
While I really love the videos of these beautiful properties, what I really have to give you props for is your production quality! Especially your sound, which 90% of youtubers get wrong. Nice consistent levels across the whole video. Thank you for the excellent quality!
I really loved seeing a home in the mountains. As someone wo lives rurally I really like the idea of having a sink right by the front door , no more muddy hands/boots! I would love to see more of what's out there rurally in the way of farm or ranch
here in the UK a rethatching would cost you around £30-50k, and you're expected to go up to 40 to 60 years between full replacements if you do regular maintenance. its interesting to see the difference elsewhere!
looking at these is just a dream, im from switzerland working hard to hopefully somehow life in japan, since it prop wont happen, im glad to atleast be able to watch these videos
OMG! If I have that much money, I would love to buy this house. Not only due to it's location but also do to it's uniqueness and historical background.❤❤❤❤❤
This is such an interesting place! Would be really neat to see unique places outside of Tokyo as well if you're going to continue looking outside of the area.
At 7:49 you put kanji for constellation (星座)and not for the traditional way of sitting (正座) Other than that, really cool video. Maybe make a video some day about sharehouses and other communal style buildings in Japan? I live in one right now in Osaka :D
It's actually a very nice place. I hope you do something like a series where you show what 1M gets you in Tokyo, Kyoto etc and what 1M gets you in some less popular area of Japan. 😅 Maybe in Sapporo 😅
The engalla (probably not spelt right), this is the picture perfect Japanese sitting area to look out at the perfect Japanese garden. I do find in total it doesn't quite have the character I'd hope for through out, but I guess this is typical Japanese style. I think if they put a lot more natural rustic wood in the kitchen that would be incredible. Japanese don't get too creative inside I keep noticing. I love the fire pit inside. I'd probably myself use it as a meditation and story telling room. You get a good amount of land with it and it'll be a perfectly quiet neighbourhood I'm sure.
That water tap right outside of the door is phenomenal to clean off your boots after a long hike through the mud during rain season. That's how I'd probably end up using it anyways... Quick and easy way to get the worst dirt off my feet before I ruin my pretty little genkan with it and have to spend the rest of the day sweeping and or wiping down the floors...
What a beautiful home! But i wonder what the ventilation is like in the room with the fire pit? How would you not suffocate or prevent your whole house from getting smokey?
When we drove through the country side we saw those sexy black roof tiles on all these beautiful homes, I was so jealous. I'll pass on the thatch, though!
I recently visited the Cotswolds in England, where i viewed some Thatched roofs homes. it takes skilled tradesmen to install them. They have an apprenticeship program and accept only a few lucky applicants. Beautiful home. I’ve been to Tokyo, but not Kyoto. Maybe next time.
I love the area and the house is really nice. My first thought was that the style didn't seem to be for me, but thinking more on it, there are definitely certain touches that I can do to make it so. Now I just have to find $1,000,000 somewhere....
It’s funny the economy are so different around the world, with that kind of money I could easily find a house double the size and double the yard without problem. However…. it would be a pain to clean x’)
@@NaeniaNightingale Absolutely. That kind of money around where I am would easily get me a 6 bed house, 4 car garage, and at least a half acre of land.
Congratulations once again on 100K subs, well deserved 👏 Thanks for clearing up the confusion about the different names I hear dropped during your videos. I was always confused by Hearing different names in the videos, Blackship, Tokyo Portfolio, and from Chris' old videos I-Home. Again congratulations
100k!! Congratulations ~ Instantly looked at the careers page on the website 😂 Almost checked all the boxes, but the Japanese level is not quite there yet :( Keep up the good work. I hope one day I will be able to afford on of your listed properties.
I'm curious to know; are there any particular building regulations for properties? For example, here in UK you aren't allowed to have a toilet/wc open directly onto a kitchen so you essentially have to have 2 separate doors between the 2 rooms. Also why the owner didn't structure the walls so as to make the 2nd (european) bathroom an en-suite to the bedroom? Great vid, makes a change from Tokyo!
I won't lie. This is gorgeous, and the owner did a bang-up job. But I'd rather pick out a nice older Kominka style, have it disassembled, renewed and upgraded to modern safety standards, and have it shipped and erected on my own plot of land here in America. The Wyoming Rocky Mountains are really pretty you know? These older homes are built with old-growth oak, mahogany, cypress, cedar, Etc. A quality you just can't buy new. So I'd rather save the old wood home, and give it a new life in a place I'm already comfortable in.
That's what it is actually for lol. Love Alex and this channel but I definitely had a "oh bless your heart" moment when he said it was for hands, if the owner/builder told him that, he was trolling him for sure.
1/4 an acre is a ton of land?? Holy moly. In the states thats a normal sized lot in a housing addition! *Also it would be nice if you included the link directly to that property, instead of to the homepage not the easiest to find unless you know the address or area*
It's cool, but while old, seems to have lost a lot of charm of being an old home. I'm not that much of a fan of it honestly. I don't think there's enough of a value preposition there. You're spending a lot of money but you're far from civilization and you're not exactly getting some massive estate as compensation for that.
Hey Alex will you make video about apartment in Royal Season Azabu Nagasaka i saw it at your website and woud realy like to see the tour. It seams as the beutiful place.
Finally, he starts telling us in-video that he has a realtor company and these places are for sale through his site. I can imagine people with this kind of money, watching a cool UA-cam video and being inspired to get a place like this. But not realizing that THE MAN IN THE VIDEO CAN SELL IT TO YOU. EASY SIMPLE
I've never liked the idea of a bathroom right next to the kitchen. Imagine you're preparing or eating dinner, maybe some guests are over, and all of a sudden you hear someone go at it on the toilet. Pray to what ever deity is out there you don't smell anything once the door opens.
A millions dollars seems quite a lot even considering the craftsmanship. I would have guessed between 500 and 600 thousand. I'd be interested to know what the house and land cost before renovations though. It can't have been much, so what are the rates of those craftsmen going for?
If I had the budget, I'd want a house with an exterior like that, and the location is great, but I'd rather have the interior match the exterior a bit more. It feels SO modern. EDIT: I do have to acknowledge that it's great that they included some traditional elements, but the textures, colors, and materials all just come off so modern.
Ah, what a beautiful place. I’d love to live there. Let me just win my lottery money and I’m there lol 😆 Congrats on your subscriber milestone! Love your channel. 😃👏
a million for that in Japan... 1hr and 30mins away from the closest major train station/city... $100k to replace the roof every 20 years... I mean... I guess it's good they think they have a market but I can't imagine buyers are clamouring to be the first to buy what I'd call a bungalow at best.
seller is delusional if he thinks anyone will pay that. I learned recently housing is a depreciating asst in Japan....this would be a deal breaker for me.
Right? I know it's taboo for relators to talk about negatives strongly. But 2 hours away from a city in the states would be another town. I have to wonder, what attractions besides fishing in the nearby stream is out there for someone who is in a market for this house. Maybe it is a getaway house to be close to nature and you let the maids worry about grocery shopping in the city 2 hours away, but if I think of a the million dollar home buyer in the US, I can't imagine them being happy with this location. In Kyoto, only technically. I really enjoyed the video, but I hope this isn't the normal well maintained and or renovated rurual home price for the Japanese.
You praised the high ceilings but you came within a few inches of touching your head on the kitchen vent and door frames to even ducking your head a couple of times. I know, it's not built for NBA players. How tall are you though? Obviously the main beams are the main beams. But some of those things are brand new.
Wait, wasn't the channel Tokyo portfolio, I must be lost, it's the Kyoto Portfolio now? Jokes aside, I love the thatched roof. I grew up under one in Hungary. Interesting how very alien cultures use very similar technologies. But as you've said, it's a dying breed.
Congrats on 100k subs, well earned. If I had a million bucks, I'd rent a reasonable condo in Tokyo, and save the rest so I can live there a few years, only need $300k in the bank to get a year long visa.
hmm while it is impressive and very large, i don't think it's worth that much...the price is high because it's newly renovated...there are many more kominka that are cheaper and comparable although maybe not new and not as large or on as large property...interesting though, i feel like i like that style better than some other traditional Japanese houses
The place looks amazing, but also not so very practical. Not conducive to Western style life, or modern life for that matter. The fire in the windowless room with no opening in the ceiling also worries me. Especially in a thatched roof house, next to which you wouldn’t even want to light a fire in the garden. I own a thatched roof house and we last redid the roof in 1996. It is still in good condition and doesn’t have to be redone, yet. With good maintenance and care and high quality reeds you can get 30 years out of it no problem. It definitely also doesn’t leak. These roof styles are amazing for wet climates.

But yeah looking at your website even the cheapest offer you have is WAAAAY over my budget .... increible how any human actually doesn't mind paying these prices especially as the usual wage in Japan doesn't even seem that high.
Alright commenters -- if you had a million dollars, would you want to buy a place in the big city or somewhere like this?
Yes, I funnily came across it awhile ago. Suprised you showed it! Its so lovely if i had the money I'd deffo buy it haha
Oh, definitely some place in a rural area. So beautiful, Alex; this home was charming yet modern.
I think I'd pick the big city just for things being walkable. Rural would be great for a weekend away but it's just more practical to be in the city.
Definitely somewhere in the Kyoto or Osaka outer areas, this is way more interesting to me than a cramped apartment, really loved the video, thank you
I think a mid sized city is best. I went to Japan this spring and found some surprisingly quiet areas in Tokyo, which I liked. but my favourites were Atami and Kamakura. I see you got through the first 50 seconds of the video
Obviously it would be rare as you are TOKYO Portfolio, but I would be thrilled to see more videos about properties in other areas of Japan, particularly in other places in the Kansai region, such as Osaka
Yeah, seeing some Osaka properties would be great.
I'd like to see what you could get in Matsuyama for such prices, always wanted to go there
The way western and Japanese is blended in this house is one of the best examples I've ever seen. Usually the divide in function is a lot more obvious. This house just flows like it's all natural.
I didnt see a western half house ... I would say 100% traditional japansese house
congrats on 100k subs, very consistently good content
While I really love the videos of these beautiful properties, what I really have to give you props for is your production quality! Especially your sound, which 90% of youtubers get wrong. Nice consistent levels across the whole video. Thank you for the excellent quality!

A new video from TP? My day instantly got better.
The more of these I watch, the more I want to buy a house in Japan.
here in the UK a rethatching would cost you around £30-50k, and you're expected to go up to 40 to 60 years between full replacements if you do regular maintenance. its interesting to see the difference elsewhere!
Fantastic Property! Thanks for finding these gems. One day, I would love to have a place in Japan and will be sure to hit you up for some info.

i dunno what is it about house tour but i really love what youre doing. thanks for giving us the place to enjoy this kind of content :))
7:45 Minor correction, 星座 is constellation. You're talking about 正座.
Love the style of this house and it matches so well with the rest of the buildings despite being new building! Congrats on 100k Sub!
Congrats on 100K! I always love these walkthroughs, and this place is just stunning!
This is such an interesting place! Would be really neat to see unique places outside of Tokyo as well if you're going to continue looking outside of the area.
Awesome news, Alex!!! Been a long time follower of your channel...
At 7:49 you put kanji for constellation (星座)and not for the traditional way of sitting (正座)
Other than that, really cool video. Maybe make a video some day about sharehouses and other communal style buildings in Japan? I live in one right now in Osaka :D
Stunning home on some pretty sweet land. I'd definitely love to live somewhere like that.

I vote for sapporo as the next 1 million video. Also, congratulations on 100k 🎉
Bro...the outside sink near the frontdoor is for washing off boots before bringing them inside. note its height and the grate below it.
What a beautiful home! But i wonder what the ventilation is like in the room with the fire pit? How would you not suffocate or prevent your whole house from getting smokey?
so far this is the cool house i ever see
I hope you guys will expand your business outside of Tokyo one day!
I love that you've acknowledged that getting in the tub is now a thing. also, congrats on 100k!
When we drove through the country side we saw those sexy black roof tiles on all these beautiful homes, I was so jealous. I'll pass on the thatch, though!
Congrats on 100k! Well deserved!
Congratulations on hitting 100k subs! You deserve a lot more than that! Cheers!

Beautiful home. I’ve been to Tokyo, but not Kyoto. Maybe next time.
Thank you for the Christmas vid great to see videos on Japanese houses
the fire pit thing would be great for toasting marshmallows. Fish is an acquired taste that I dont have 🤮 🤣. Interesting house.. . 👍👍

Wow this is so inspiring! ID LOVE TO MEET YOU! any meet and greets soon????

What a beautiful home 🏡
could you make a tour of "Graticcio" that's on the website?
This is what I wish was more common: Japanese tradition done modern.
Good video I hope you focus more outside Tokyo like osaka, Fukuoka, Sapporo
gz on 100k subs! the house and the land it sits on are gorgeous, but that boring kitchen unit could've been so much better.
How well insulated is this house?
I’m not the tallest person 6’1 but that ceiling clearance is also low for me
You scraped against the top of the door frames -- for reference, how tall would that be?
You are my real estate hero, @TokyoPortfolio
Covid's not over, so this house with an outside faucet would be perfect for me.

Nope, we make sure to only show you properties that are foreigner-friendly

Not a chance, I want modern fireproof, earthquake and typhoon resistant house that also well insulated. Concrete is the answer. 😊
Can you purchase a property in Japan as a non-citizen?
I would buy this, but only if I was certain I could afford future roof renewals. $100k is a lot, but maybe that's not much to ask of someone who can truly afford a million dollar home 😮
nice but what about more urban Kyoto?
Your style remember me Pagan Min from Far Cry
I wish you would upload more often :(
Bring Chris along when you have a million dollars home review.
How tall is he, anyways? It would help me understand just how badly I'd bonk my head in all these rooms lol
If I was rich this is the kind of place I'd want in japan but I would have to change a few things mainly I'd get rid of the western bathroom you don't need two in a place with so few bedrooms, I mean if you converted that other bathroom into bedroom and tea room a bedroom thats a max of 3, 1 bathroom to 3 bedrooms is fine.
one of the most beautiful places I have seen yet but as most people I wouldn't and couldn't pay 100k each year for a new roof even if I had the money to rent or buy this thing.
But yeah looking at your website even the cheapest offer you have is WAAAAY over my budget .... increible how any human actually doesn't mind paying these prices especially as the usual wage in Japan doesn't even seem that high.
7:46 very wrong kanji there. Should be "正座"
“星座” means constellation/Astrology...
1 mill doesnt get you much eh.. Only one bedroom.. Have to be really specific buyer for this one.
