- How to jab properly - A powerful jab is probably the most useful punch in all of boxing. howtofightnow.com You can mess up people's faces, and win the technique game. If you learn how to throw a good jab, you will be able to keep your opponent away from you, and also use the punch to set up additional power strikes.
Boxing Technique isn't always easy to master, and proper jab form is no different. That said, a little focus will give you the tools that you need to win fights every time. I especially love using jabs to set up my roundhound kicks. While jabbing alone might not win the fight, the use of this punch to deliver massive power strikes is invaluable.
You can learn how to strike harder, and use the jab for additional set ups by visiting howtofightnow.com.
The jab video lesson is in the section titled "The Basics". Also in that section are tricks using the jab to land more strikes, as well as other boxing technique video lessons for the cross, hook, and general striking power.

LOL... Prom date says "Oh! My balls!" Date over.
Maybe some people don't realize this but Trav is an excellent teacher. You know, a badass teacher. Some people may be good at what they do but that doesn't qualify them to teach. Trav says some great lessons and makes it entertaining so you can actually pay attention and remember them. I currently have A.D.D. But I'm retaining most of what he says. So maybe it's just his personality but it's great while teaching. That and people will show you more respect.
ADD sucks right?
You're right about Trav, he's the best teacher/trainer on youtube i.m.o.
Bas Rutten fights with a completely square fighting stance, and yet your are critiquing my angle of entry. I have trained with him since '98 The entire world can double jab moving to the left, the only strike you are vulnerable to is an overhand right, which is also probably the easiest strike to slip in all of fighting. A fighter can make almost anything work, you can also continue to name the obvious counters for everything, then I'll name the counter to your counter and nothing is proven.
I like Trav. He has a good sense of humor and his videos are both educational and entertaining. Overall he seems like a highly skilled fighter. Some of his lessons might apply to pugilism ('boxing'), some might not. But all are practical for self-defense purposes ('street fighting'). That being said, violence is NOT cool, and bullies suck! :P Thanks, Trav.
..well that was a fun night in jail
Thanks man... I agree in about the terribleness of many tutorials, and I'm glad you don't think I fall into that category :-)
Im teaching Sanda(Chinese boxe) Since 2001...and every day i've learned some...and your videos is so usefull to remeber old thing and learn new thing..tks for all..and sorry my bad english cause im learned by myself.
I don't know how I never saw any of your videos before, you keep it very informative yet hilarious so people don't feel overwhelmed. Awesome work Trav!
Trav man, love the videos, keep em coming. Very entertaining and very helpful for a newbie like me.
Great video and teacher!
bhop and floyd are pure boxing... and I feel like those knee turning techniques are simply creative boxing.
Wing chun to me is characterized by an ineffective and inefficient fighting stance, and "circle or chain punching".... which is just nonsense. Glad you like the vids regardless!
nice explaining...and the prom clips are funny ! keep them coming ...
Subbed.
Love the tips and the humor.
Happy new year.
These videos are definitely special. Thank you.
Yeah it took me years to even begin paying attention to that foot dynamic in a jab. This the realest for sure!
Fantastic. This video made me realize how slow my first step is. I am known in my gym to have good power with my strikes expect for my jab. Thanks for the info.
yeah you have all the right... Thanks man.
Thanks for teaching me the techniques
I wish I would've seen this before my first amatuer boxing match. I hardly threw any jabs at all. Thanks for the tips! I'll definitely train my jabs now.
you amizing!!! i cant wait to other video!,
Great Stuff as always Trav.
Good advice!
Your examples in tutorials are great;)
Its good that you teaching with passion;)
I will remember about "making surprises" haha
Thanks, great.
Awesome tutorial. I find that the jab is one of the most under rated and under used punches. Most people use it as a set up punch but you use it as an attack... Finally someone preaching from my fight card :-)
this guy knows what he is talking about .
This is so creative and easy to receive for children!! I am going to your website now!!!
Thanks for the update. That's what I figured...a case of the "internet confidence" yet again. Man, if I could train with half the toughness people pretend they have on internet chats I'd be unbeatable!! Keep up the good work bro.
"oh my balls!"...LOL
Sick vid man. I can throw the hay maker with a one two. But my jab always felt funny and this helped it!. Oh yeah, and were can I get one of those shirts?
Awesome videos for free.... Your awesome!
Last nights fights were SIIICKKKK!!! One of the best UFC events I've seen in a long time.
no dude thats the reason i love it. hes trying to help u relate -_-
The jokes are great man, keep it up...It makes your videos more enjoyable, nobody else does that xD
V. Belfort vs W. Silva is a great example of facing and using a straight blast of punches to take someone out. UFC Brasil
you legend thank you.
love your vid's, great stuff......just a thought, a lot of times in a bar fight you'll have someone coming from behind and throw a standing rear naked choke, whats the best way to defend that ( not speaking from experience) I just see it happening a lot
Despite your silliness you teach good stuff.
Ok lol prom girl cracked me up
hi trav thanks for all the amazing videos..should the jab be always thrown with a push off the rear foot? during sparring find myself in a bad habit of sort of pivoting off the front foot(so keeping front foot planted and moving the rear foot)
my daddy always told me that in all sports "Everything starts with the feet!" and he's very right.
just found your vids. love them! good info and some funny stuff to. new sub.
This is legit. Good information
All the power from punching come from the ground, that's why its better to stay flat footed when punching, its called "rooting", its a lot like how a tree is rooted into the ground, secondly connecting your hips and elbows into your punch is very important.I also prefer face my opponenets with my hips square on, this allows me to use both hands equally, thirdly staying relaxed when punching is key....This is great channel by the way and I love the energy your putting into ur videos...Peace
that is true if your mostly try to jab and move or get a potshot.but when it comes to throwing your right hand in that stance it severely takes away range and maybe even a bit of power. It really comes down to the situation and opponent and yourself what stance you use.
The prom metaphor killed me hahaha
Informative and funny!
Trav I got a question on the roundhouse kicks. How can you correctly and accurately engage in a jumping (spinning) roundhouse effectively? Can you make a video of that
Thanku
Could you give us a video on how to defend an land hit on a heavier weight person who's good a fighting?
This looks like karate Oytsky and han zen kutsudachy stance...Very similar. Great to see.
Bas Rutten is a one of my favorites, other than him and Tyson I don't see many ppl applying the "facing" principal, which we practice in Wing Chun. Facing gives u so many advantages in fighting, it allows you to use 2 hands while he has 1, to fire off more punches quickly, and its easier to protect ur centreline etc
Wow nice tips wish u were in chicago I would join its what I need. Any schools In Chicago that u would recommend.
you are really funny but this is some good information to learn how to fight thanks for the uploads
I like this can you teach the right or left hook now
Somehow, this outcome does not surprise me. LOL! Appears he had a case of the "internet confidence". Thanks for the update.
If your hand is going into the guys face, but it's not supported by anything connected to the floor, how can it possible have a powerful impact? You WANT your force to be going into the floor, so you are supporting my point. Your foot drives your hip forward, hip connects to the torso and subsequently your shoulder. The bottom line is, if you visualize the method I teach, your jab will be a lot faster and it will have the support of your legs driving into the ground.
these videos are the best, funny as shit too!!
hey i have a suggestion... could you do a video on how to fight or knock out or finish someone thats taller and bigger than you in size
two JABS well done
stupid question here but what is my lead food? im left handed would it be my left foot that i put forward and my right foot back behind the left one? also when throwing crosses its the opposite right? my left food would be back and my right forward so i can have that hip movement?
PLEASE keep me informed of the results of this. I need a good laugh or two. Nice big hearty ones that make me cry in the process.
subscribing to this channel just for this match lol.
Hey Trav, shouldn't you jab and circle away from the other guy's power hand? (Assuming he's orthodox).
ur shot bro. but good vid
This is the right way to do good jab i do it the same way. I have a question cause i start lot more weight lifting and bar training and i gained some weight and now I'm about 195-200lb. I'm still doing my boxing trainings at least once per week at home (boxing bag shadow boxing and more). But i start feeling rly slow compared to my previous weight of ~170 well my hit get lot more harder but lot more slower. Can u give me some advice how to gain speed up and still lifting..
U should make more videos
HAHAHAHA THIS GUY'S METAPHOR IS JUST HILARIOUS
you remind me of mayhem miller. this is a good thing.
Lol. Love the video :)
I really never thought about how all jabs can be divided into how many feet you throw into it.
The idea of breaking all jabs down into two groups is brilliant.
Everything else is a variation after all.
Am I misinterpreting your lesson?
Oh my God this is good can't get any good than this video technique jab punch. I learn a lot you have to be very quick with the foot technique and they will make anyone into a woman these days.
You like like the white Blake griffin. Lmfao but your lessons do help, they build on the fundamentals I already have. Thanks bro bro and keep em coming.
double jab to inside leg kick or body kick my favorite simple combo and im a southpaw
Jab is nice, because it FEELS natural to follow up with another strike.....with a hook, there's Lots of practice for follow-up....and your Abdominal Core needs to be Strong, since you're pivoting back and forth.....with a Jab, it's just a Straight punch...and slight leg movement, which can be learned REALLY fast.....and the speed is Very quick.
you are proffesional like relly i have seen your ead movent and you slipped away every punch impressin you can make it
so basically if i do a jab cross combination. i need to move my Left foot, then right foot then right foot again? since you step down with the cross for more power. so L R R
What is the most powerful one trav??
"Oh, my balls!" Not something I ever want to hear my date say.
I just use my jab to setup my right hook to the body or straight right to the chin
He always does that freaking pointing thing 3:53 .. i like it.. but then i see him do it in every damn video and im like wtf
i gotta say this bro...my nickname is mr untouchable overhere...but you ma man...you are the real deal!!! i got no shit in buisness with u bruddah! lol i just roll with m punches like toney but u...1 cant touch u!!! respec
tem como botar um vídeo com legente em português-Brasil ?
I want a Fight Smart shirt!!!
i'm sure this has been dropped already in other comments somewhere in the youtube ether, but...
Blake Griffin, right?
Apparently he's equally skilled at slamming faces with fists, as he is a ball through a hoop.
Kudos, and thanks, Blake. Super informative shit. Funny too. Bravo.
LMFAO!!!!!!!! at 3:00 couldn't stop laughing
I wanna give this a thousand likes.
Besides getting ready for a haymaker, what should I be doing with my right hand while I am throwing the jab??
While throwing jabs, you should keep your right hand close to your chin to protect it. In case your opponent throws a counter.
Frankie Edgar style o; Nice.
I agree, definitely a hero behind a keyboard. Probably doesn't even know what an incoming jab feels like.
What about throwing a faster jab by using Bruce Lee's method of always moving the hands before the feet with hand techniques. As in starting to throw the jab, then taking the step slightly after you start extending the arm, and the fist landing on the target slightly before the step lands, so your forward momentum goes into the target instead of the floor. It is slightly tricky getting the timing, but I land straight lead punches with doing that all the time.
My power comes from the floor and exits through my fist.
***** My power comes from my soul and exits through God.
+Guidance Fromafar what r u talking about?
+Hernantolio good for you. gods not real.
It doesn't take any power away it adds power and also this is a Muay Thai Jab Not a boxing jab so it may not be as effective in surprise but it increases distance and power for a close in fighting jab
Problem: I have had a stroke resulting in a weak & uncoordinated left jab. Drunks that want to fight see my weakness then look at me like a lion ready to pounce then feast on a kill, this happens regularly now and many times their friends step in and save my ass or I can flip the situation and buy them a beer and we become buddies...Unfortunately this tactic does not always work and I end up taking to many hard shots to the body and head...& that's not fun. Should I just focus on using my right side as the fighting side and use the left as more of the defensive side expecting to take more blows?
Haha get 'em!
Explain how not to double the jab in the same rhythm your fighting in! Or u will get countered by the jab as well! Specially with that basic footwork!
"Oh my balls!"
Dude. It's one technique. Open your mind and this guy has so much free knowledge. Of your right with a wrestler,.. but this is just a technique. It's all about amalgam.
Dude if I could've given this 10 likes, I would've. I couldn't so I subscribed. Def the most unsuckiest jab tutorial on yt!
This must be more MMA style striking, doesn't look like how boxers set their punches up
Totally agree. I use a channel called fighters domain. It's the real deal.
AlrightThen15 ya but a street fight I going to be more like mma then a boxing match
PayPal 1 Lol if you're a decent boxer your footwork, technique, & speed will be more than enough to make it seem like a boxing match. Boxers have better, faster, & stronger punches more times than not compared to MMA fighters.
true but mama has a larger arsenal and better, faster and stronger punches don't necessarily guarantee a win against mma fighters
Good videos trev but would like to see how good your technique works
How about you visit a mma or boxing gym take the camera down there on sparring day
Explain why you are there etc and maybe spar with 3 different guys starting from a novice and move upwards
the head movement is effective but not sure how much especially with half decent fighters.
but would really like to see a good amateur boxer or somebody on there way to being half decent spar for a round or two with you.
