  • I wanted to make a Kiridashi for a long time, so this week I decided to make my own version of it, a pocket kiridashi with a leather sheath. I used C130 High Carbon Steel, 4oz vegetable tanned leather and quenched it in old motor oil.

    It must give you immeasurable pleasure knowing that; not only can you forge and finish metal but you can protect it in a gorgeous leather sheath. It is amazing how clean and elegant your work is. Not only the knife, but the leather work. Incredible.

      Thank you very much Bruce. I truly appreciate your kind words. And yes, it does :) I started leatherworking few years ago, and when I was finally able to combine it with metalworking, it made so much more sense. Thanks again for watching!!

      My pleasure. I am encouraged by precise and beautiful work. Yours are both. I try to get there. (only with the leather work) I simply need more practice. That is easy to do. Just practice.

    • @RedSmithLeatherwork
      @RedSmithLeatherwork  6 років тому +1

      When you heat metal to red and quench it in oil or water, it changes the structure of the metal and makes it really hard but also brittle. Putting it in the oven makes it less brittle but keep a certain hardness. Without this step, metal would break easy when used It's called tempering the blade :)

    I'm interested in the products you are using for the leather. I'm talking about the containers with the Japanese characters. What brand are they, and where can you find them online (I asume you're in Europe).

    • @RedSmithLeatherwork
      @RedSmithLeatherwork  6 років тому

      It's called Koto Finish, by a company called Craft and it's only avaliable in Japan. But you can use any burninshing gum by any company, the result will be the same.

      Tell them it's a tool build especially since you showed it cutting leather. If they demonitized that then they are worse tha n I believe they are and I think they are pretty bad now.

    Super ! La trempe du c130 c'est pas a 780° et a 10° près? 😅

    • @RedSmithLeatherwork
      @RedSmithLeatherwork  6 років тому

      Merci, la trempe est entre 780 et 800° avec un revenu entre 200 et 300° selon la dureté souhaitée, et ce sont les températures auxquelles j'étais :)

    • @camillesennegon
      @camillesennegon 6 років тому +1

      The Redsmith oui j'en doute pas mais c'est galère a tremper le c130 ^^ si tu veut faire des trempes selectives trempe le a l'eau

    • @RedSmithLeatherwork

    Very nice and I like the securing it to the sheath. I think though I will use a long rivet or Chicago screw. Awesome though.

    • @RedSmithLeatherwork
      @RedSmithLeatherwork  6 років тому

      Thanks a lot Billy. Yes I thought about that but I didn't have Chicago screws and a long rivet would have kept the blade from spinning freely into the sheath, so the leather strip was the best option for me :) Thanks a lot for watching.
