      Well done buddy, that's what we like to hear... lots of money saved and a happy working motorcycle! It's chronic how much money that Harley want for a battery, not to mention how much they'd charge to fit it, so good housekeeping there brother! Lots of other Harley vids on our Channel ... take care, Del

    Del,
    I have the highest respect for you and your tutorials. My only comment is that you make it look so damn easy. It took me 3 hours struggle where I called the bike several choice terms that I hope never to repeat, And an extra trip to the Harley dealer to replace a nut that I dropped somewhere in the Twilight Zone, never to be heard from again. But I completed it, it started, and once again, all is right with the world. Thanks again.
    David

      Hi David, not uncommon mate, but remember, if you've never done it before, any job takes longer... I have the same issue, but the next time you do that, it will take you half the time and you'll do it with no stress - well done mate, least you took it on and didn't pay someone else to do it ! Ride safe, Del

    Thanks for posting this! It was a huge money saver to do it myself. I was terrified to work on my bike, but this video made it easy. All except putting the battery back in, putting the negative back on was a lot harder than you made it look, but I didn't have the best tools for the job, I'm back up and running, and I'm not a mechanic. Thanks again!

    Had the battery go dead while stopped to shop, called a friend who replaced the battery.. Got home ok and went the following day to ride and wouldn't start. Lights came on and bright, but nothing. So I watched this to learn how to take seat off and look at things and NOT be afraid I would screw things up more... Will attempt looking again, as it got to hot to work outside on it. Boyfriend is out of town and he isn't available to help.. So next step to find a class to take on general bike mechanics... Thanks for all the tips and the video!

      Yes it is. I try to do as much as I can on my own, because then I know what was really done with it and because I like doing it. I knew the basics on how to change the battery, but the batteries I've changed have always been directly under the seat instead of hidden by the side panel, and then when I saw the fuse boxes and everything else I figured it'd be best to do some research before I started yanking things out.

    I just want to thank you for such an easy to follow video. A cold snap finally killed off my old battery. I was ready to pay $100 (+ the ~$100 for the battery) for a mobile mechanic to come out. It was fortunate that they messed me about with the appointment, so I looked up a video for how to do it myself and bingo yours popped up. Ok, so it's not the hardest thing to do, but as someone who never opens a car bonnet apart from topping up the oil, having the confidence to this was massive. Thanks, you saved me over a $100 and made my day!

    Del, It has been a while since I watched your videos. I have a new used bike now, a Yamaha 1900cc Raider...great fun and heavy as hell. But here is what I remember about your videos. You make it look so easy. There are a few things you have left out. The part where it takes 3 times as long as it looks in your videos to do something. And you left out the part where you drop some vital part which promptly rolls under a bench, you spend 3 hours trying and failing to find it, prompting yet another visit to the Harley dealer to buy a new one. And you left out the part where you bang your knuckles, bleed everywhere, and curse to high heaven. Aside from that, your videos are absolutely delightful, enormously entertaining, and very informative.
    By the way, I have revisited this video as my Yamaha Raider battery is about to crap out. I have not yet found one of those yellow Motrobatt gel filled batteries to fit my bike. My best to you and Penny. David Lehrer

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  3 роки тому

      Hi David, good to hear from you Sir and welcome back!... and thank you for your message, did make us smile because believe me I do all those things from time to time and what makes it more frustrating is when something goes absolutely right first time in practice, then you switch the camera on to film the shot and you drop that nut or bolt, it rolls in to the next dimension somewhere and all the rest of the things you said ensue! But with the wonders of editing we keep it simple and, hopefully, keep it entertaining! Have a great weekend and ride safe, enjoy you new ride... D&Px

    Your video gave me the confidence I needed to test and ultimately replace my battery this afternoon. I initially wasn't sure of the problem but after checking voltage, determined the battery to be bad. Wasn't sure how to take it out until I found this video. Removing the seat was not needed but you definitely need a 10mm wrench and socket. While many parts of the bike are SAE, battery makers have joined the rest of the world and gone with metric. Thank you again.

    Just like my mom made me go through riding lessons, my mom made me watch this tutorial!! Vicki Varee (previously commented) is my mom and that is my bike she’s talking about. Mom is a widow and we try to do as much as we can on our own because we have found, people try to take advantage of our little knowledge and triple charge us. My friend was trying to explain how to do this to me and I was just like, I don’t know if I could do this…but now, watching your video, I feel so confident that I could do this on my own! Your videos are so detailed and great! Thank you for sharing!!

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  10 років тому

      Thank you so much for sharing that with us, it must be really hard finding people you can trust who have your interests at heart... The battery swap is real easy when you see it done aye?, the part that scares people is disconnecting with the alarm attached and worrying they'll mess up the electrics....but once you pull that main fuse...you shut down absolutely everything and its totally safe... Good luck with it JR, i hope it goes well for you, and please drop us a line and let me know if we can be of any help at all, any time... take care and all the best to you both... Del. P.S, Where abouts are you in the world?.

    Just wanted to post a quick note of thanks for this video. I needed to attach what we call a battery tender (I think refer to it as an optimizer). I was hesitant to try to install it myself because I had heard horror stories about how difficult it was to remove the battery or even try to service it, on a Harley. Of course when I talked with the mechs at the Harley Service Department, they encouraged my fear of trying to do anything with the battery.
    After watching your video, I went out and followed your instruction to the letter and found myself done installing the battery tender in less than 30 minutes.
    Thanks for the great instructional video.

      @Moonfleet41  9 років тому

      NealnYvonne Fisher Hello Neal, my word how good to hear from you, and i'm so glad that our video could help you out. Im not surprised that the Harley guys tried to put you off it, it can be trickey and they probably have to pick over the mess people get into, but as you found, its a simple procedure and easy once you see it done. Plus i also think it's a great way to enjoy your bike that little more, and broaden the joy of ownership by having had hands-on with the bike rather then just handing it to the Pro's and paying the bill.
      If you feel like taking on other tasks with your bike, then we have many videos to cover the basics, and if you invest in the proper genuine workshop manual, (The dealer can sell it to you, its a bit fat A4 book and costs about $100) then you'll find there are many jobs you can do yourself to keep things safe and on the road.
      All the very best to you and Yvonne, take care and ride safe..
      Del&Penny.

    A proper company. thinking about it.
    Something so minor as a small corner cutout to allow allen key access. Many wouldnt bother.
    The little things make a difference.
    Love your presentation style mate.
    Simple laymans language with all that we need and a little bit more.
    Im in the same boat. Battery has dropped off and not holding.
    Replacement was $170 Aussie. A bit steep but gotta wear it. (im 450 kms from city)
    Ive learned that your page is my 1st choice go to, for things i need.
    I was concerned about that alarm screaming. Now i dont have to be.
    That ignition on, drop the fuse tip, is Gold.
    My 2015 sportster dosnt have that cutout in the side cover. No biggy, i just drilled a small hole to run a cable tie through. Those retainer clips are pretty average. (even new ones)
    Another great, helpfull video.
    Thanks mate :)

You saved me $140 which is what the Harley dealership wanted from me for labor charges, plus you showed me a few things that I was having challenges with when I reinstalled the battery ( reconnecting the main fuse, how to attach the fuse box to the battery strap, the zip tie suggestion was way cool too!). I should have taken a few pictures when I started disconnecting things at the beginning but didn't and I'm thankful for your simple and clear instructions - even with an accent I was able to put things back together exactly where they belong and have my 2011 XL883 up and running and making noise again......Yeehaw!!! Hey Billy, thanks buddy, never really felt the need to suck up to the MoCo, in fact, to be honest mate, I'm getting a bit tired of the way they've been sticking it to their customers for the last 5yrs, they've stopped making bikes we can afford and the dealers they seem to have appointed (certainly those we've experienced here) are greedy, arrogant gits who ignore you unless you walk in waving your wallet in the air! Going back to basics, a Harley is actually a pretty simple bike and there's pretty much nothing that cannot be carried out by the home mechanic... good luck buddy, cheers, Del

      Moonfleet41 I actually agree with your statement. This is my first HD (Sportster XL1200c) and I love the bike but the sales guys decend on me whenever I go into a dealership telling me that my bike is too small for me and I need to upgrade immediately. Awesome, thanks for the help. Out in Korea with limited resources and help. Couldn't get to the negative cable like the owner's manual says (extended ratchet with swivel socket to disconnect cable on ground stud) because I couldn't find a swivel socket small enough to fit and the last thing I needed was to get a jacked up price taking into to the HD dealership 45 min away. On my 2007 sportster. First big bike so wasn't aware of the need for a trickle charger. Battery went and I'm now on my 5th day of waiting for the dealer to collect it and sort it. Hiya Delboy - thanks for the clarity on killing the alarm system - worked perfectly on my 2013 Fatboy. One thing to add - if anyone finds the alarm STILL goes off when touching the main fuse and the display reads "ENTER PIN #" - then the fob battery needs replacing. Once thats done, display / functions will go back to normal and following your instruction - they can go ahead - 'IGN on'
    and pull the fuse. I found this out the hard way... :) Just ordered a new battery - unfortunately MOTOBATT suppliers here in NZ have more than doubled the price - so I'm going for a USPS AGM - similar to the original but at half the price.
    Again - thanks mate.

    Hay dude... just like to thank you for saving me money with this tutorial.
    I had already ordered a new battery (Leoch GEL GT14-3 YTX14L-BS CTM14L-BS) for £34.99 before seeing your vid... only problem I had was having to manipulate the wires as the battery's -&+ terminals were not plush with the face but set back - so without bending the connectors they would have been sticking out the sides and the whole thing wouldn't fit bk in the bike!
    (not sure how clearly u may understand my explanation there!)
    ...anyhoo your advice all worked and I'm back on the road :)

    Being from the USA, I was shocked and impressed with the confederate flag in ur garage in the UK. Thanks for the help... Watched this to help me remove the battery to install a battery tender. Cold North Carolina winter has killed this one.

      Hey Mark. Thanks so much for that, its good to hear from you sir.. The flag was a gift from a friend in Texas a long time ago.. i have no politics related t it, just a tribute to our friends in the USA, and all things blue collar and all that..over here in the UK we grew up on a diet of Duke of Hazard and stories about Popcorn Sutton..so its a part of my life too in a way.. Thankyou for watching the videos and getting on touch.. Keep warm, soon be spring.. Del.
