  • I think I've finally got the design working right for my new slab rack. Join me on today's video where I show you how I went from a pile of lumber (cut from my sawmill) to a nice new slab rack. This new slab rack should allow for easy cutting of my sawmill waste with my chainsaw as well as easy bundling when I decide to sell it. Thanks for watching!

    Nice job!
I built my H frame from 4.5" posts. 8 legs total. 8' long, 6' tall.
Solid wood shelf 3' off the ground.
Heavy, rigid, movable with forks and you dont have to bend over.
Laying a few 4x4s across the shelf provides space for banding, forks, and saw.
My 36" bar reaches all the way across for a single full cut every 16".
I know another sawyer who bundles flitches and sells them for 50$.
But he cuts railroad ties, and didnt use firewood for heat.
Any actual "slab" got edged for a minimum of a 2x4.
And large slabs were edged into a 2x6 and 2x4 simultaneously.
A edger is the golden ticket.
The long design you made seems like it would hold the long oversized pieces well and cutting them down to fit wouldnt be required as often.
And i place mine inline with mill. Easy transferring.
I enjoy your videos. Thank you!

Looks like you got a plan going there. I'm going to be interested in seeing how it works out. Looks like it might be a darn good idea. Those slits are always a pain to work with. I find that I carefully stack them. Helps a lot. Nothing gets put on the ground unless it has at least a 4 / 4 or 2 under it to keep it off the ground. Thanks Sandy you always thinking.👍

Interesting design. I agree when you throw slabs in, it will make a better pile for sure. Get a few cheap ratchet straps, and you’ll be golden. You might even be able to lay the straps in ahead of time and hang each end on a bracket (to keep the strap off the ground). You have ignited my imagination. I will be interested to see how it works after they’ve been cut up!

I think it's an overdue project, but you finally built it. What I question; if the stack is four feet high (assuming the bottom of the rack is one foot above ground), that means you have to lift the sawn wood, nine feet to clear the rack. Even if you put a strap around the wood, do you have something that'll lift it high enough to clear the rack? If the bottom of the stack was two feet, instead of one foot high, you wouldn't have to bend over as much, and if you cut the sides down for a three foot stack, you're back to the original height, but only have to lift the sawn lumber eight feet to clear the rack. The way you loaded it, the wood isn't lying flat. When you're throwing slabwood into it, that's one slab at a time that'll be lying flat, so a lot more weight to lift. IF you added a piece of plywood on the end and threw the slabwood in so it's in contact with the plywood, your cut firewood would be uniform in length. Even if you only brought a 55-gallon drum (open top) out to the mill, you could be burning it as necessary for heat while you're working.
Experiment with it and refine it. It's a good start, Sandy!!

A linear foot of 2*4 is 2 * 4 * 12 = 96 sq inches. A board foot is 1inch x 12 x 12 or 144 sq inches. 96 / 144 = 2/3 of a sq foot. so 242 linear feet * .667 = 161 board feet. approx of course ;) And of course a real 2 X 4 is only 1.5 inch by 3.5 inch and i treated it as real dimension for conversion.
