Fantastic interview. I had never really thought about the architect/gardener dynamic before. It’s interesting. I would love to see you interview Mike Carey, Sean Phillips, Alex Maleev, Bill Sienkewicz, Mike Oeming, Chip Zdarsky, Donny Cates, Greg Rucka, David Marquez, Sara Pichelli, Nicola Scott
Ed's incognito is so so fun and good. It's short and pacey would have been amazing as a series or a movie. He also worked with Nicolas refn on too old to die young, which is a good show.
Brubaker was one of the first writers I got into when I was first getting into comics in 2018-2019. Criminal, and from there Velvet, Fatale, Sleeper, Fade Out, Scene of the Crime, and currently his Cap run... he's probably one of my favorite writers and a huge reason why I'm still reading comics now. Bless this man. Looking forward to the copy of An Accidental Death I found. Pulp, Reckless, and undoubtedly Friday have been, and are gonna be awesome. I'd love to see interviews with people like Peter Milligan, Garth Ennis, Neil Gaiman, Sean Philips or Chris Bachalo.
Ed knew a kid who everyone thought would become a writer and got advice from him, and is now sharing that advice with us. The kid did not become a writer. The irony/beauty of this is wonderful. Thank you for doing this interview and sharing it with all of us!
Excellent interview. I hadn't seen or heard Ed talk previously and have to admit how chill and non-menacing a writer who does his best work in crime and violence (lol). This was a very informative conversation. I had not really heard of the gardener vs architect approach to writing. Sounds super interesting. Great job as usual Elsa.
Now I understand better the construction of Bucky's character in Captain America. This information on the primacy of the character in Ed's writing is a new light to read his comics. Thanks! Great channel, Elsa. Greetings from Chili.
Merci pour cette excellente interview, Elsa ! C'était extrêmement instructif, notamment la partie sur la structuration de l'histoire. C'est vraiment précieux d'avoir ce type d'éclairage sur le process créatif et ça change des traditionnelles interviews promo. Merci encore !
Very interesting format. This interview was very nicely runned. And his experience is very inspiring. Comics author that I would love an interview of is Art Spiegelman. How he came from underground comics to maybe the most famous one (Maus) is always interesting, but Art Spiegelman rarely talks about his techniques for doing Comics.
Elsa, you have a wonderful talent for interviewing. I was thinking about Matt and Kelly Sue, but they don't usually do interviews together. I thought about Bill Sienkiewicz. His art is phenomenal! I'd love to hear his thoughts on where he gets his ideas.
Great interview!!!! Some other creators I’d love for you to interview: Matt Fraction (I think you know him 😄) Fiona Staples Chris Samnee Gail Simone Bendis Joelle Jones Keep up the great work.
I think Chip Zdarsky would be a fun interview. He is one of the very few writer/artists working today, and exploring that dynamic would be very interesting.
With the emphasis on craft, maybe Jonathan Hickman would be a neat interview? - he seems like he might have interesting insights regarding the mechanics of writing. Erica Henderson would be awesome, also! Or anybody! These videos are always so wonderful!
Excellent interview, Elsa; what you are building here is so important for comics. And your love for the medium shines through in every video and it's infectious. I'd love to see you interview Matt Lesniewski (The Freak, Crimson Flower, Static), Eric Powell (Goon) or Liam Sharp (a LOT of comics).
Great insightful interview, I love his work. I would love an interview with Chip Zdarsky's beard... And Chip himself, eventually, since he's gonna be there too. :D
You talked about Darwyn and the Parker Books, and I think your art style would be perfect to continue those adaptations! Or at least a project very similar (looking forward to whatever the future project with Brubaker is). I know those were very much Darwyn's baby, but I would love to see the series continued in spirit, even if it isn't the same creator.
Great video and moment with a talented author. Some years ago, JASON AARON was everywhere on Marvel productions. i personnaly discovered him on a short story of Black Panther during the "secret invasion" period. He had a relly interesting way to present classical situations in a new way but iconic for characters. I never saw interview of him and i would love to see your questions for him. i'm really interesting in the way to write short stories too. Which seems to be the perfect step to enter in the comics creation. MIKE MIGNOLA seems to be a perfect author to do thats and evocated a background we never saw as a reader, but which feels immediatly consistant. This is my suggestions for author or subjects. Thank you very much for your GREAT work !
This is such a great episode. I love this kind of content around comics. I would love to see an interview with Daniel Warren Johnson. I love his approach to comics. Equal mix of fun, action, and heart felt story telling. Every series that he's written and drawn has both made me squeal from excitement and cry.
I'm a huge fan since his DD run , then became an addict of this wonderful couple since Criminal issue 1.Brubaker Phillips is the jagger Richards of comics .Not the Lennon McCartney because of the secret ingredient :)
Elsa, that interview was fantastic. I've always wanted to see inside of my favorite creator's notebooks and thought process, so seeing Ed's was very enlightening. I'd love to see you pick Wes Craig's brain on how he makes his art.
Absolutely love what you have started here Elsa! This channel is something I didn't really know I was missing! Thanks also for a comment you made on your Case Study of Hawkeye that took me too Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou's Strip Panel Naked, which also is a real treasure trove. I will need to dig into his PanelxPanel when I can justify it in my budget. When it comes to other creators to interview I have so many I think would be cool to hear from. So I made a list (since I get excited and find it hard to limit the amount of suggestions): Writers: Kieron Gillen, Rick Remender, Greg Rucka, Simon Spurrier, Scott Snyder, Kelly Sue DeConnick Illustrators: Andrea Sorrentino, Wes Craig, Jon Davis-Hunt, Christian Ward, Greg Smallwood, Stephanie Hans, Jerome Opeña, Aaron Campbell, Matías Bergara, Emma Ríos, Sean Philips (would be a cool follow-up to this one with Ed), Jock, J.H. Williams III, David Aja, Bill Sienkiewicz, Eduardo Risso, Frank Quitely, Francesco Francavilla, Tula Lotay, Dave McKean Would also be interesting to see you prod the minds of writer-artists like Paul Pope, Mike Mignola and Jeff Lemire on the different approaches depending on if they do both things on a project or just write or draw. If I could dream big hearing Mike Carey or Neil Gaiman, writers very much concerned with the sheer fabric of storytelling in their comics, would make me ecstatic. An interview with a scolar like Scott McCloud on the nature of comics could be fascinating too. Doing some deep diving into colour and lettering, the territory of the often unsung heroes of the creative team, is something I would suggest for exploration. The Stewarts, Bellaires, Wootons and Kleins need their praise too. Looking into the "anatomy" of a good cover would also be highly revelatory. Since the great John Paul Leon died a few days ago a look into his work could be a good start and a nice celebration of his lasting legacy. Sorry I kind of went rambling but your channel really did whet my appetite. Here's to a prosperous life for your endeavours here and elsewhere! Thanks again for this harbour of comics creativity. Pär from Sweden
I would really love to see more interviews with solo creators to examine through lines in their thought process. Like how does somebody like Sean Philips or Daniel Clowes outline their work? Is it visual, written etc. thanks for the fantastic interview and content. This is quickly becoming my favorite comics channel.
What a precious interview! Thanks a lot Elsa! I love the format as well! I'd like to hear words from Matt Fraction, since you've worked with him already!
(Thks for the interview and thanks for the channel) C'est un soutien non négligeable et très instructif 😊 (It's a real support and it's also very instructive). Pourquoi pas Jonathan Hickman? (Jonathan Hickman perhaps?) Hate de voir ta prochaine vidéo 😊🤟
L'écritre d'Ed Brubaker est superbe, c'est super intéressant de pouvoir l'écouter parler de son travail ! Perso je kifferais une interview de Garth Ennis
What exactly ed meant when he said about 'gardener' or 'architect' way of planning your story ??? Also i would love an interview of brian bendis or kelly tompson.
Ahead of typing out their script, the architect will precisely (with different degrees of obsessiveness) map out every single element of the story so that everything fits neatly. Their focus is usually on structure, in my experience. The gardener will be more loose in their outline, like Ed does, and will rely more on instinct and the inspiration of the moment to fill in the blanks when they move on to scripting. Is that clearer?

This interview is excellent thanks to the host. You are so incredibly knowledgeable and succinct that it makes Ed shine.
Fantastic interview. I had never really thought about the architect/gardener dynamic before. It’s interesting. I would love to see you interview Mike Carey, Sean Phillips, Alex Maleev, Bill Sienkewicz, Mike Oeming, Chip Zdarsky, Donny Cates, Greg Rucka, David Marquez, Sara Pichelli, Nicola Scott
awesome, i love a lot brubakers work. if you get to interview grant morrison...my mind will explode
Ed's incognito is so so fun and good. It's short and pacey would have been amazing as a series or a movie. He also worked with Nicolas refn on too old to die young, which is a good show.

He’s one of my fav autor ! Merci pour cette interview !
Ed is my favourite writer! And Elsa is fast becoming a fav artist! Bravo Elsa on this new amazing channel!

I bought both reckless books in large part because of this interview, they're very good. Thanks.

How he came from underground comics to maybe the most famous one (Maus) is always interesting, but Art Spiegelman rarely talks about his techniques for doing Comics.
Oh gosh, I would DIE if Art Spiegelman ever agreed to something like this.
I guess you read Metamouse, where Art Spiegleman deeply explained the story behind the comic and the making of it. It really worth the read.
Elsa, you have a wonderful talent for interviewing. I was thinking about Matt and Kelly Sue, but they don't usually do interviews together. I thought about Bill Sienkiewicz. His art is phenomenal! I'd love to hear his thoughts on where he gets his ideas.
Very informative interview and one of the best,if not the best, interview I've so far seen with brubaker 😎
Great interview!!!! Some other creators I’d love for you to interview:
Matt Fraction (I think you know him 😄)
Fiona Staples
Chris Samnee
Gail Simone
Bendis
Joelle Jones
Keep up the great work.
Thank you! There will definitely be an interview of Matt at some point, and I would love to all your other suggestions on as well!

One of the greats in comics right now. Look forward to anything he releases
Wow Wonderful interview! Great to know a bit about his creative process. I'd love to see artists like François Schuiten and Teresa Valero 👏👏👏
Great insightful interview, I love his work.
I would love an interview with Chip Zdarsky's beard... And Chip himself, eventually, since he's gonna be there too. :D

Great Interview. as for creator recommendations would love to hear you interview TILLIE WALDEN, Daniel Warren Johnson or Tyler Boss
LOVE this interview and has all Brubakers' stuff and now, I also need to find, buy and read Elsa' books/comics :-)
This is such a great episode. I love this kind of content around comics. I would love to see an interview with Daniel Warren Johnson. I love his approach to comics. Loved his Captain America & Daredevil runs and his run with Matt Fraction on Iron Fist.

Great interview. Thank you for posting this.
Thanks so much for this interview video!

Excellente interview, merci Elsa !
It would be good to see your top 5 artist/graphic novels and for you to talk through the art - great vids by the way
Wonderful interview, Elsa!

Great stuff. Loved this interview
Wow, what an educating and deep interview. Thank you so much for doing this!
This is such an interesting and fun interview. I loved your questions around the research topics and how he focused on topics for his research.
Thank you for this interesant interview. I hope the best of success for you and your work.
His Captain America run was the reason I wanted to read superhero comics
Wonderful ideed , if there ever was one way, and I mean ONE to bring Bucky back that was it!
Do you plan to do any videos of your own drawing process? I would love to see a video of you breaking down your own drawings? That would be awesome!
My dream is you interviewing Jeff Smith. Two brilliant humans.
Merci déjà pour l'interview et merci pour la chaîne! (Thks for the interview and thanks for the channel) C'est un soutien non négligeable et très instructif 😊 (It's a real support and it's also very instructive).
Pourquoi pas Jonathan Hickman? (Jonathan Hickman perhaps?)
Hate de voir ta prochaine vidéo 😊🤟
Mike Deodato Jr., Eduardo Risso, Palle Schmidt, David Ajá.
Superbe idée pour une vidéo. Bien joué pour l'interview :D
I don't know if it is too big of an ask, but I would love to see an interview with Jeff Lemire or Ta-Nehesi Coates!
Amazing inrterview
Great interview. Will Ed reprint Kill or be Killed deluxe edition ? It has been oop for awhile. It would sell.
Interview with the artist please, Sean Phillips, Frank Quitely, Dan Mora
Please interview Terry Moore. Great channel. 👍
I'd love Sean Gordan Murphy on, he's a very humble and talented writer. I love all his books so far. Specially White knight and Constantine.
What exactly ed meant when he said about 'gardener' or 'architect' way of planning your story ??? Also i would love an interview of brian bendis or kelly tompson.

@@ElsaCharretierChannel yes it is more clear now thanks!
@10:33 Parker references
Ram V would be a really interesting interview.
I'm new to drawing and i missed your art book campaign. Can i purchase it anywhere else?
hi! Yes! One of the links in the description of the video sends you there!
You got Brubaker on?! Him and Sean Phillips are peanut butter and jelly!
Glad to know some of the writers I admire are also Gardners like me 😂
I know this is going to be hard: Christopher Priest.
David Lafuente please. He has an intersting point of view about the comics - editors - artists - life.
Jorge Fornes, Mitch Gerards or Nick Derigton would all be interesting! :D
They sure would be!!
Merci !
