Michael Head - The British Masters Season 3 - Chapter 6
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 жов 2024
- Music is an entirely subjective thing. However we will fight anyone who denies that Liverpool’s Michael Head is one of the finest songwriters that the UK has ever produced.
He is the subject of the latest episode of this Noisey series that has featured everyone from Noel Gallagher and Goldie to Johnny Marr and Tricky.
In host John Doran’s own words, “He has a discography recorded with The Pale Fountains, Shack and more recently The Red Elastic Band, that most songwriters would kill for. A lifetime of poor luck with record labels, the shifting tastes of the record buying public and long standing issues with drink and drugs means that he has never found the audience he deserves. Even if it’s by accident however, Mick has ended up playing the long game and future generations will come to regard him as some kind of genius, even if it’s currently a view only shared by his small but rabidly loyal fanbase."

He’s a genius with no airs and graces whatsoever. Thank you for this interview.
The Magical World Of The Strands remains a stand out album for me. It is magical!
I cant find any lyrics. Help?
Currently at number 3 in my all-time top 3...
Beautiful album 💙
Every Sunday morning for the past few years my husband and I make coffee and listen to (in order): Nico, Chelsea Girl; The Magical World of the Strands; and Lambert & Nuttycombe, At Home. It's two hours of pure bliss
Waterpistol is a great British album that has never lost its relevance, class act
"he has never found the audience he deserves." - I think he has. It's not a huge audience, it won't mean hanging out with Branson on Necker Island, but it's an audience who knows the words and values the songwriter and the musicians he works with.
You all prolly dont give a damn but does any of you know a tool to get back into an Instagram account?
I stupidly forgot my password. I love any assistance you can offer me!
@Jasper Joseph instablaster :)
@@50milliondownthedraintonym16 I've rather have his audience than to spend my life as a UA-cam edgelord.
even 4 years later, I can absolutely say this is the most accurate comment here
Mega Talented Songwriter who deserves to be heard.
Mick is one of the greatest ever British songwriters.
Undecided & Something Like You, two of my favourites.
Lived above Mick in a flat in liverpool. Thouroughly nice bloke. Happy(ish) times!
The Pale Fountains were such a massive part of my life in the early 80s.....brilliant, happy memories! The best. Loved the times we spent with these guys, Chris especially. They were super talented and should have had huge success. The band I was in was signed to Virgin around the same time, and for the same size of advance - very similar backstory going from manky rehearsal rooms and tiny wee gigs in Edinburgh to living at the Columbia Hotel in London for 3 years - we were all kind of in it together, and had a ball. Just good clean teenage fun. The most beautiful thing of all was we all genuinely took it totally in our stride. I don't think any of us had a scoobie about the size of the opportunity we had at the time. But that's the beauty of being young I guess. Great to see you again Mike. Giles (Hey! Elastica) xx
Waterpistol is one of my favourite albums of all time.
Agreed. A Desert Island disc, one which I had the good fortune to work on. Time Machine is genious!
Had a friend he managed a record store in Los Angeles in the 80s we loved imported music bands back then so much but really fell in love with pale fountains sound from day one, Michael head is a total genius, still play his music today, great music just grows and grows on you over the years doesn't get stale at all like so many other bands do.
The album "The Magical World of The Strands" kicked my head, to me is one on top among the greatest albums (of course not for selling millions of copies, sadly). Mike is such a fine poet-composer, his songs touch our hearts and feelings. Love and cheers from a big fan in Argentina.
Jeans not happening is one of the best 80’s songs
John's British Masters series is just awesome!!!
mostly when you meet these "genius" musicians, they're arseholes. but Mick is hands down the nicest of them i've ever watched, so genuine and down to earth and humble, with a real head on his shoulders and a knack for observing the beauty in life. He's unassuming but there's great depth and love under the surface, and thats true of his music too. Top chief
Who are the arseholes you've met?
Beautifully put! I also see Mick that way, class act, genius singer-songwriter, yet sweet down-to-earth guy.
He's amazing and like a fine wine only gets better with age!
I live in the U.S. and was not previously aware of this artist. I like the folksy style and guitar work. I ended up here because my name is Michael Head, and take my work for it. Bad luck just comes with the name!
Am very new to Mick : bought Dear Scott a few weeks ago, I can't put it down. The first interview I have seen of him, he seems a sweet soul, very enjoyable.
Really enjoyed that. It’s good to see Mick keeping it together. The new LP is superb. As an artist, despite all he has been through, the music hasn’t suffered.
had the privilege of seeing Shack and Mick Head, over the years, and ive never been as uplifted in a gig as much in my life. He's a living genius and deserves so much recognition
One of the UK’s most talented lyricist and musician.
I cant say much apart from BRILLIANT, so down to earth and so so nice.
HMS fable is such a great album.
Barrie Black amen to that
the most beautiful title for an album I ever heard
@ king bear
Absolutely. I was looking for that comment. Didn't have to scroll far, gladly ;)
If ever a piece of music summed up a time and a place then for me, HMS Fable was it. Stunning
The best!!!
I just recently discovered Pale Fountains, it was really interesting watch
Gifted gifted gifted gifted artist. Love ya, Mick!
Waterpistol is the best album of the 90's.
Behave yourself.x
@@wormsnake1 he’s right though

So says the deaf institute. Subjectivity is different to objectivity. You’re entitled to think “The Bay City Rollers” are great but your mistaken and wide of the mark in this opinion. There’s about 3 disillusioned and dishonest people on the planet that may say the same. You’d have a job finding them though. The La’s were musically, lyrically and quite “literally” on another planet.x
HMS Fable for me chief. Stunning album
@@wormsnake1 I changed my mind. I went through a stage of realisation and the las are the best fucking thing ever and I know EVERYTHING about them
Inspirational human..iv only just stumbled across him ..wot a boss fella
What a great fella dead easy going and a real talent from the fountains to Shack grea interview
I think John does the best music interviews you can get. I've not seen better. Whether you are really into the artist or not they're fascinating. The Quietus is his website too, full of good stuff. Enjoyed this one.
To be fair, he's very good but comes across as Northern centric sycophant. Still, better than most.
Thank you to Alex @Vice and all at Noisey and John Doran of course. Great to meet you all x
Violette Records is.this michael?
The Streets of Kenny....what a track!
Was listening to that in Kenny helping a guy with a renovation. He told me to turn it off. Fuckin peanut head.
WOW ! Great interview. Pale Fountains & Shack are genius.
Brilliant - this brought back so many powerful memories of listening to The Magical World of the Strands
'Comedy' is my fave x
Mick is a monster song writer, lyrics and melodies just flow from him so easily. And his acoustic guitar is great as is his brother and the bands he's been in.
Mick still looks cool - the way he carries himself it’s great .
Quietus, thank you SO much for spotlighting Michael. Life long fan.Bit of a wince dismissing Slapp Happy. Sooo.....how about Paul Simpson(The Wild Swans 'The Revolutionary Spirit')? Another great.
Mick Head. True Genius
Ahh, he comes across lovely here 🥹
A legend.
Still waiting for Michaels best tunes! Such a great talent.

Another great interview,cheers.
Liverpool had a massive punk scene

Jay Paul YES YES YES. JOHN POWERS WOULD BE COOL AS FUCK TOO
harry drewitt
Doubt it man..
roddy2body speak for yourself. I personally think it would be quality to have a propperly produced in-depth interview. Just my opinion since he's one of my favourites
Isn't he dead?
Pat Kelly who knows. He did a few live performances about 10 years ago but no one's seen him since
great interview, very enjoyable -
Another left-hander!
Great interview. Michael & TREB playing Nottingham in June with new album out in May. Looking forward to a night of wonderful music both new and back catalogue.
Elated to see Mick being interviewed, but disappointed he wasn't questioned on The Magical World of the Strands, Mick's magnum opus. Truly a beautiful album.
He seems a lovely bloke. .
great interview should be longer
Mick Head is a legend amongst those in the know - "Jeans Not Happening" is one of the finest pop songs ever created. This is an awesome exposé long overdue for this great singer songwriter, but there really needs to be something done on Paul Simpson of The Wild Swans,Care,Teardrop Explodes,Skyray - way better than McCulloch ever was or could be.
Great, Mick Head is a wonderful songwriter I’ve followed since 1982. Just a bit disappointed John didn’t talk about Magical World of the Strands, which is without doubt his finest work IMO
Is Right Noisey ! Tha was brilliant
Excellent interview thank you!
Great music love it
Love you Mick x
Love you Mick 💙
Whoever reading this have a awesome day fam
Kung-Fu Kenny Family I respect that. You 2 fam

Excellent interview.

Funny thing with Michael is that he actually sounds more scouse when he sings
Genius songwriter
A legend
The Strands!!!!
Two cool people talking about cool music.
Shack i need you , my fav song of all time then John kline, best music ever.

Michael Head is a fckin wonderful song writer.. I love the man as much as i love Arthur Lee and Scott Walker and as much as i love Alex Chilton and Gene Clark... thats how much !
I went for a Chinese with Mick on South Rd in Crosby once. That’s my claim to fame. Oh and Steven Gerrard buying me a pint on 9/11. Both of those things are true. Mick, you’re a gentleman.
Puts zero effort into his appearance but yet looks cool
as fuck
The Guvonor..seen em in 89..board walk.. whole family fans ever since..the Manc band ..Pastel...state shack as being there favourite band..
Keep making these ❤️
that music/drone in the back round is driving me mad!
It's very annoying.
Love Mick Head, a real honest guy...... can you interview Ian McNabb
A brilliant songwriter still unknown
But sensibility really can smash you down...
Didn't know you'd made one of these with Mike Head!
Wow! After Viv Albertine / Tricky / Mark E Smith we get *even more* genuinely interesting interview choices! Yuss!! :D

Lads, before you ask, Lee Mavers isn't going to happen haha
MILLENNIAL ANIMAL why not?
Who knows. He did an in depth interview for the book Isle of Noises not so long ago.
Would be incredible tho
Great song writer…
Brilliant
soph M how old r u
Excellent - really enjoying this series - and John Doran if you are reading this you are looking good.
HMS Fable should've been massive.
❤❤❤
Not one question about his younger brother, John, who was also in Shack? This blank interviewer should’ve read more than three paragraphs off the bio he was handed five minutes before Mick walked in.
Drugs will do to you what they do to your career up then down down or die no matter how talented you are ..
Would be interesting to see a Peter Hook interview
Top that, fucking love mick. But still no mention of his brother, has something happened there?
Try interview Ian Brown !!!
Noel Gallagher you were wrong there is a true rock star in England! (Ref to Evening Standard article 4 May).
Never really got into the pale fountains love Shack though.
One question I would have asked Mick, what happened to the Strands? Well, 3 questions actually. The Strands? Zilch... Was it such a bad album? (I personally love it) and 'The girl with the long brown hair' Has Emma ever got in touch with him?
Zilch.. love it..the cover is mint..belivers.. what's it like.. I need you
.classics.. they are our favourite band
.so to speak
. My lads band. Pastel
.pastel.are influenced by shack.
@@andrewyates1819 I'll check em out !

Someone please track down Lee Mavers and talk some sense into him. We need him!
No come on, Lee mavers is in a leaugue of his own. Please document Lee before he forgets or doesn't care enough to speak about his talent.
Shack..are a different class..mavers is a genius. Head brothers are amazing
