Maybe more for antique flute collectors? These shakuhachis must have fascinating histories! The art behind you looks like pen and ink. I love it! Thanks for an interesting analysis of these great old instruments.

Glad you like the “flute connoisseur” series. More will be coming soon, with improved sound and video. The travel sketches are from my trip to the Shakuhachi festival in Kyoto 2012. Water soluble pencil, 5 x 9“. One watercolor a day for two weeks. Being on stage in Japan and meeting my colleagues was great fun too.

Very interesting video and I liked learning about the various types of flutes you have for sale. Your art in the background on the wall is amazing.

Amazing shakuhachis and performance! (drawings on the wall are beautifull too). According to science the sound produced by the bamboo resonating is inaudible, the sound comes from the emptiness (bore shape) or the shape of the air inside the bore, thats means that is not the sound of bamboo but the sound of the shape of the air itself which is even more mystical. A good thick pvc or aluminum straight tube with the right diameter and thickness will sound amazing aswell like the aireedx katana. The more the material is rigid or harder the less sound will absorb , also the windy sound will come from the friction of the bamboo or material irregularities like inside nodes etc (a jinashi of course). I think the only two shapes that will sound good are straight tube or tapered tube (double tapered) according to how standing sound waves will travel on a pipe and node antinodes and pressure points formations. Being a buddhist instrument, the five holes are the five skhandas, and is not the material but the emptiness that produces sound , i like to view that as an example of the unsubstantiality of things, the impermanence, and devoid of self. Five skhandas are: Form, sensation, perception, mental activity, consciousness. By opening and closing the holes you play with skhandas to create the ilusion of sound which come from sunyata represented by the emptiness of the bore. The moment you trascend the skhandas and forget of them while playing, becomimg one with the bore you are in true zen state. Suizen. Gate gate paragate parasamgate bodhi svaha! Amitofo!

Thank you for teaching me about these subtle concepts. I took a intuitive and artistic approach to analyzing the waves in the Shakuhachi in the video “tone colors”. I feel the focus should always be on the emptiness of the flute, the lungs, and the mind that activates the sound.

Thanks for this way to approach shakuhachi 🙏

What are the practical differences between Kinko and Tozan? I imagine they sound different.

As far as the flutes go, the only difference is the shape of the Utaguchi (blowing edge insert). Tarzan playing techniques however, are very different, and even some fingerings are different.
