  • This is a famous song from the nothern-east part of Japan. Since it's a cold area, they must had practiced in the harsh cold winds. I think the silent parts in the music are really cool.

Thank you for the great music and sound! I am a very beginner and you inspire me to play! I also try to record my sound sometimes to improve my playing skills. There is very little information on how to record shakuhachi. You have one of the best shakuhachi sound I have heard! Can you share some advice on the type and placement of microphones, I saw that you tried different configurations. Can you please share some general tips on processing shakuhachi sound in Logic Pro? Thank you so much!

Thank you for your comment. Recording is fun, but I'm not very good at it. As for the microphone placement, I currently aim to position it between the first and second holes (from bottom side). I think the sound also changes depending on the reflections in the room. I believe it's important to experiment with different setups. In my case, I have to do everything by myself, so it doesn't go very smoothly. In Logic, I apply a bit of compression and some reverb. Mastering Assistant is very convenient, and adjusting the EQ slightly afterward might be beneficial. However, I didn't use Mastering Assistant this time.

Thank you very much for your answer! I listen to different shakuhachi performers, and besides the beautiful performance, your recordings stand out for me from all of them because of the sound quality, I feel shakuhachi alive and present. I really like when you use Rode NT1+MXL R144, please tell me do you place them side by side at one point (x/y, a-b) or is one of them the main one and closer to the instrument? Thank you for your answer and your time!

@@alexK-777-7 Ha Ha Ha! In this recording, I placed the NT1 about 1 meter away, 30 degrees to my right, and 70 centimeters above the floor. The R144 was positioned about 1.5 meters away, 30 degrees to my left, and at a height of approximately 1.5 meters. There should be some phase issues, but since I’m working alone, I haven’t been able to adjust for them properly. The room is mostly made of wood, which likely causes excessive reflection, but I haven’t managed to make adjustments to reduce it. For this recording, I tried placing a bed mattress behind the microphones, but I’m not sure of its effect. I’ve also experimented with AB, XY, MS, and ORTF setups, but they have been challenging. However, the performance itself is far more important. At that time, I had memorized the piece, which allowed for much greater freedom.

Thank you for such a detailed answer! I thought to start with one R144 microphone, I assumed that the R144 microphone emphasizes the mid and low frequencies and softens the high frequencies, which will give softness and fullness to the sound. You are absolutely right, the performance of the piece comes first, the recording is just an addition. I am sure that the biggest part of your sound is not the microphones but your playing skills.

@@alexK-777-7 R144 is a passive ribbon microphone, so its output is quite low. In my case, I use a DM1 DYNAMITE to boost the signal. The microphone itself is inexpensive, but it comes with additional costs!
