Automatic Transmission Swap in my Jeep Wrangler TJ, Part 1

- Опубліковано 5 вер 2024
- In this video I am starting the AX15 manual transmission swap to a Jeep Wrangler YJ 32RH 3 speed automatic transmission. I rebuild the transmission with all new internals and install a Transgo TF-3 full manual shift kit. This will make this transmission no longer shift by itself making it great for offroad and rock crawling. I give you all the parts you will need to get you started on this swap.

i did a automatic swap (AW4) in my 97 TJ many years ago and never looked back. it is wonderful in the rocks!
I liked to parts list segment. More people should do that on videos like this
Thanks. I felt it was important, but left till the end to not bore people who just want to watch a video.
Serious skills! So awesome to see a little bit of the process and work that goes into a rebuild. I just replaced my A340F here at the house and having never done a transmission before i was feeling accomplished... this is on a whole different level!!
Where's the video!! Lol, can't wait for that since I've got a A340F in my 4Runner I've been wanting to rebuild. Not that there's anything won't with it, just PM on the 21 year old truck.
Thanks for the hope!
Have huge sentimental attachment to my Dad's 1964 Willys, but have no aspirations to off- roading.
Love all your content! I liked hearing a little about your background. I hope you will make a video more about it and a little back story. Keep the videos coming!!!
Great video
I have almost everything for someone to do this project. Built 42rle and most of all of the parts.
I didn't do the swap, my 2002 TJ came with the 32RH Automatic. But I had it rebuilt with a shift kit and they managed to squeeze an extra plate in there and I also installed the deep sump tranny pan and new torque converter and when winter is over I'll be putting in an electric fan tranny cooler in back under the tub. Oh shoot. I also had the front breather plugged up front behind the torque converter and I had them drill and install the new breather back near the tail but on the front half before the seal. Then I plugged the tiny breather hole on the bottom of the adapter as well.
Nice little scene from the funny rocks in Naches!
Way out of my wheel house. Saying that, I still like the videos. I find them interesting and very informative. Maybe one day I'll be able to look back on one for guidance or inspiration. Thanks and keep up the great work.
Thanks, I appreciate that 🤟🏻
Super cool, Kelly! Can't wait to see it in action. 💪🏼👍🏻🎄🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Great video man! The camera and editing work makes for a fun watch; keep up the great work!
Thanks👊🏻
great video. thanks for the parts list not very often do people give out the parts list for the project. thank you
15:40 a friend of mine who made a 3 speed tranny swap in his 97 wrangler kept his clutch pedal in and welded it to the brake pedal. Actually really smart so you can use 2 feet for brake and gas for fast pedal swaps. If it’s not too late maybe consider that.
Not a bad idea. But I am going to try and sell all my old stuff as a complete manual swap, so I need the pedals intact.
Should use full manual reverse pattern valve body for crawling puts 1 and reverse close together I have same trans in my cj7
That definitely would be the best option, but the cost was too high for this build. the reverse manual valve body is $400, shift kit was $112.
I’m dumping my 42rle this spring and swapping in a reverse pattern full manual 700r4. Manual valve bodies are unquestionably better in reverse pattern. Gotta love the CJ7, grandfather of my beloved LJ!
While I can't imagine a world were I would ever buy another vehicle with an auto trans or heaven forbid convert from a manual to an auto, (I've actually done an auto to manual swap back in the day)
I understand that others might do this for their own reasons. Great job on the rebuild. Always enjoy your content, you always do a great job presenting you topic. God less, stay well.
I never thought I would swap to an auto either... but here I am. Thanks for the kind words🤟🏻
@@MuddyBeards4X4 Hello. I have a Cj7 that originally came equipped with a 904. I want to install a newer model starter that comes with the 4.0 engines. What type of starter do I need? number of teeth? Or starter and flex plate part numbers. Please
Very cool video. That is one we all consider in out TJ's. My wife can't drive my manual 6 speed so I often thought about putting an automatic in it. I'll have to do some more research on it. 🤔🤙
Thanks, if this wasn’t a trailered offroad only rig I would probably lean towards the AW4, they are cheap and fairly strong. And it’s 4 speeds and electronic shifting.
Thank you. Autos are king. MERRY Christmas to you and your family
Thanks man I appreciate it👊🏻
i dont blame you.. i just generally dont care for a manual unless its a on road vehicle. screwing around with clutch on inclines is just not fun for me lol.. even on my atvs manuals just are a pain in the ass offroad imo
Damn Kelly, you are a Jack of all trades.....lol.....
🤣
Very informative and easy to understand. Good job.
You make unrolling paper towels look cool! Lol😄
🤣
Brave man. Great work!
I went from a tf999 in my yj to an aw4, wanted the 4th gear. Had to build my own wire harness and merge it with the factory, it was a challenge but it turned out great. Hope you like yours! Maybe someday I’ll cover what’s needed for that swap
How did you address the t-case, and were you able to use your driveshafts?
@@joshdenham8404 I re drilled the back of the transmission to clock the tc up, and I chopped one shaft down and length the other
I’m trying to do the same thing, do you have any forum or something that would guide me through it?
@@HAYTHEM543 i always said i was going to do a writeup and I never did. I had to do it the hard way because all of the write ups I found were from manual to aw4. there are a few differences coming from auto to aw4. mainly building a shifter to adapt the column linkage and the flexplate/cps has to change to different style. and making the harness is the biggest part
@@FlawedOffroad actually mine had the ax15
Huge undertaking but going to be we worth it 😉😉. Can’t wait to see the rest of this series 👍🏻
Happy holidays man.
Great video im in Australia i own a 01 tj 4.0 5 speex.i want to swap to a 32rh but there hard to find in Australia.if you can find another cheap 1 i would be happy to buy it and shio it to Australia ✌️
Great stuff as always
Thanks🤟🏻
Fyi A AND A TRANS specilizes in Chrysler trans they make the valve body that has engine braking in all gears
I will look into it👍🏻
Great video!
I don't see where you addressed the factory trans vent hole that's on the front pump cover behind the torque converter on the 32RH.
It should be plugged and then a new vent installed on top of case so it can be vented up high with a hose, just like the transfer case. Idiotic design by those at Chrysler/Jeep. In the stock location, water up to the bottom of door seals will result in water entering the transmission thru the factory located vent.
I will be looking into this. I am installing the transmission today so it’s not too late to make some changes.
Nice to see your video, you dont see alot of videos on the 32rh. Did you check the seal on the shifter shaft? Or you installing a new one already. Mine was a pain to install while it was in the jeep.
Yes, every seal inside the transmission was replaced when I had it apart.
Eh mine is leaking with a rubi express skid plate in the way
@@humzilla707 i used a specific tool that actually worked on pulling the seal and installing a new one while the transmission still in the jeep.
Blecch!
Doing a AW4 swap in my 98 TJ now. I know Rubber Ducky TJ has done the swap but do you know anyone that has a video on my swap. I have a 904 I'm swapping into my YJ too. Great Video!!!
Thanks, I don’t know much about the aw4 swap but I do know that Ryan used a rad designs shift controller for the aw4.
Can I please send you my auto out of my 06 TJ to do a reverse manual valve body? Lol great video man as always
Lol, I barely want to work on my own junk🤣 thanks man.
We share the same last name and could pass as cousins. 😂
I'm considering putting a manual valve body setup on my pickup truck with the 5 speed allison auto transmission.....
The betrayal... lol
Yup🥲 😂
Is that trany the same as a 1990 yj? I am 63 years old I done many 904 + 727 rebuild I was a ase master tech my yj is still good clean red dosen't smell shif good looking to do shift kit and deep pan.
I have a TJ with a 32rh in. I want to do a TDI swap. But people keep telling me the 32rh isn't strong enough...
does that transmission have an external breather, I had to have a breather added and hole plugged in transmission pump on my 42re.
My 32rh in my 99 TJ has the breather hole behind the torque converter. Not a good setup. I seen people plug it and drill and tap for a breather fitting on top like it should have been in the first place
@@brianjones3245 that is what I had done to to my 42re. I just figured I would mention it to him while it was out of the vehicle.
Was putting the transmission in today, but took it back apart and did the breather. Thanks guys for the heads up. Had no idea.👍🏻
I have a similar arrangement in my 1986 CJ7. It's a factory A999 auto. I did swap an AMC 304 in place of the original 258. With the 999 and factory low stall converter I discovered it pulls through the brakes in the low range after installing 4.10 gears no matter how low I set the idle speed on the 304. I have to shift to neutral on any kind of incline to stop. I am considering swapping to a higher stall converter in the 1700-2200 rpm range to eliminate this. Thoughts on converter stall off road? My trans has TCI deep finned pan and Street Fighter valve body.
This is definitely one of my concerns especially with 5.38 gears and eventually going to a 4:1 transfer case. So we will see
I really want to learn how to rebuild an auto, I have rebuilt just about everything else you can imagine but an auto! Any recommended rebuild videos that are over the top awesome and thorough? I have been trying to find a local college / tech school that offers a class but have not succeeded as of yet.
There's a channel here on youtube called automatic transmission and that's pretty much all they do lol.
part 2??
Working on it
I just rebuilt mine and I have an slow reverse , can be a bad band adjusment??
Couple question:
What did you do about the low vent hole? The low vent water/mud becomes a little scary, seen a Jeep fill a trans after sitting in a Elbe hole.
Two: (kinda answered above) AW4 would have given full manual control with a RADesgin (or similar) shifter being an electric trans,? Also OD for a little more hwy speed or low range high speed snow. Was the 32 just an easier rebuild? Or cheaper overall? I do have the 32 and the 3sp present some compromises.
Do you have a part number for the low and reverse servo and where did you get the billet band strut
Got it all from cope racing transmission.
www.coperacingtrans.com/
You got both parts from cope racing
I got some parts too from Oregon performance transmission as well. Do some research and find the best deal
I have been trying to find the low reverse servo but could only find it as a option with rebuild kit but already have rebuilt transmission and it didn't have part number but thank you for responding love all the videos
Oregon performance transmission has them, they were upgrade options when I ordered the rebuild kit.
I may have missed it but is this the 3spd auto or 4 spd auto. I have a TJ 2001 4.0 with 3spd but would really like the 4spd for the times I need the highway cruising?
3 speed
have you had much issues with your 4.0, i just recently got a jeep grand cherokee.. and i’ve been chasing a misfire on it. i’ve changed the whole coil pack rail.. fuel injectors and the fuel rail.. camshaft sensor.. all the idle air control valve map tps.. and it just keeps having the same issue.. P0301 cylinder 1 misfire.. sometimes it runs perfectly fine and other days it wont even stay idling and it seems to be pumping a shit ton of fuel in cylinder one brand new injectors ive tried two sets of injectors same effect.
I got a 2.5 01 TJ , what auto tranny is best for the swap on that year and engine ?
Did you also install check valve on transmission to radiator channel?
are you selling your ax15 setup? I might be interested haha. i want to take my 32rh out and swap to the 5 speed.
😂, yup I will be selling the complete manual swap once I have this thing all tested out.
@@MuddyBeards4X4 do you have a ballpark idea of what you want for it? had i known i would of swapped with you lol, although mine is in my 02 so it it has the tc lock up.
ehhh?
Not sure yet, haven’t decided
😎👍
I thought the AW4 was a better option for the manual to auto swap in a TJ. did you consider that option?
The aw4 is a great option as well. And they can be cheap and easy to find because they were in the Cherokee.
Oops forgot does my transmission have a lock up torque converter???
My 1999 32rh just started slipping. I bought a cooler and I plan on having it rebuilt. Basically under medium to heavy throttle it doesn't catch the next gear well. But light normal driving it shifts just fine. I plan on having a shop rebuild it. I weekend warrior this rig. Would you recommend buying the kit from this site with those upgrades minus a shift kit ( i don't want one) or letting the shop decide ? I didn't realize how many upgrade paths you could choose till this video.
I definitely would recommend a shift kit, just the transgo tf-1 it’s only like $80. I had it installed on my 92 dodge diesel tow rig. Love it. Firms up the shifts a little. Also The transmission will last longer. You could order all the parts and upgrades and hand it to them at the shop Might be cheaper. Or just ask them how much it would be.
@@MuddyBeards4X4 thank you for the advice. So not all shift kits are like the one you ordered where it makes it a manual? I'm in Arizona. So we crawl all day. Its very easy to just leave it in first but having a manual shift kit would ruin the driving experience for me outside of the trails.
There are 3 level of shift kit, I got the full race one. The tf-1 is a great choice for your situation.
I got the winters shifter for my xj on my shelf. Are you keeping a regular pattern for the shifting or going reverse manual?
I am doing a regular pattern but I will be modifying the gate slightly to make it easier to get to reverse. You can get a reverse valve body for the 32rh I believe cheetah makes one but it is almost $400.
@@MuddyBeards4X4 cool. I’d do the same if it was $400 for the valve body😳
Did you consider a 42rh or re/rle? Not only for the overdrive gearing but also the ability to add a rubicrawler gear reduction/doubler in the trans tailhousing? Was factory trans on 03+ tj i think?
I think the 42 is computer controlled so it'll be more difficult to work with where the 32rh is hydraulic operated. So it alot more simple to swap.
@@brianjones3245 yeah i just assumed he would manual valvebody swap it same as the 32rh but not sure if that’s possible. Just a thought for more gearing options and spread.
It is definitely possible. But not cheap. Trying to do this on a budget.
@@MuddyBeards4X4 yeah i’ve noticed you have been very budget conscious in your whole build. Keep up the good work. I just found the channel from Nate’s channel and really like both your styles. I only mentioned the rubicrawler because your gearing may be a little higher now than you are used to and its half the price of an atlas setup. Plus even without the rubicrawler you get OD in the 4 speed which is nice for any hwy work you ever have to do.
I have looked into the rubicrawler, but I remember it being like $1600, so basically the same price as an atlas. And it definitely would be nice to have the 4 speed or even a torque converter lockup.
I thought the 32RH was NOT electronically controlled IE no TCM, did I miss something?
I have a 99TJ with a32RH and 231, I have had the 231 apart, fully inspected, cleaned, new seals and SYE installed. It is in great condition, I saw no wear or other issues. I installed a cable shifter to hopefully make it shift better when flexed. Here is my question, when going from 4HI - N - 4LO or the opposite way, if I do not put it in park, it grinds IE the trans & T-case are spinning and gears do not mesh up when they are. So put it in park then shift and T-case doesn't always shift. If I go into N I have to shut off the engine put it in park, shift the T-case and re-start it. P I ! A Any insight on this? I have to be missing something! Wish is had a damn clutch break like a semi, I know how to run that LOL
Even though it is not electronically controlled it still needs the pcm from a auto trans in order to work.
It does seem like something isn’t right inside the t case. You should be able to shift even when moving.
@@MuddyBeards4X4 2HI - 4HI shifting on the move is never an issue. it's only when going through N - 4LO or back. Not looking forward to pulling that stupid thing again! Was hoping for an "easy fix"
@@tomhubbard353 my 99 does the same thing. I let in sit in N for a few seconds then give it a firm shift to minimize grinding.
@@humzilla707 I discovered a shifting "trick" hack whatever. Put it in park, go into N then attempt HI or LO, when it doesn't go in, use your other hand to start to take the trans out of park. as soon as it slightly spins, it goes into gear HI or LO. No grinding. Total PIA but it works.
I have 90 yj 6cly 3 speed automatic what transmission do I have good or bad???
Should be the same one I have 32rh and it probably does not have the tcc lockup.
Wonder if this would be a good option for an 05-06 tj with the nsg370?
So, how would driving a automatic transmission manually be for daily driving. I been thinking of doing a aw4 swap with manual Solenoids Solenoids, but not sure how it would be to drive it to work everyday.
Not sure about the aw4, but I wouldn’t run a full manual on something I daily drive. I would do a shift kit, maybe something that lets you do manual in 1,2,3 but still gives you automatic shifting in D.
Check out the RADesigns aw4 shifter, it does the same thing but gives you a 1-4 lever, and you can turn it on or off to let the computer shift for you or do it manual.
And if you need anymore aw4 help hit me up 🤙
What tcase and crawl ratio did you have with the manual? I wheel a manual with super low crawl and it’s amazing in the rocks
Yes, it would be much better with a much lower crawl ratio. I have a stock np231 and 5.38 gears. But for now this will cost me about $300, after selling all my old stuff. And a new t-case is $2000. So eventually I will be getting a lower t case.
@@MuddyBeards4X4 Totally understand. I'm building another rig with an auto so I'm curious to see how it wheels compared to the manual.
I am curious as well
👍
Yeah that’s too much and too little shown ..it’s better to simply get a parts list and install them ..the avg guy can’t do that ….
😭😭😭
Give any consideration to a 4 or more pinion planetary upgrade? Not sure how many 727 rules apply to a 999 but check this out: ua-cam.com/video/_Cjy3KtHpQM/v-deo.html
