Making a Unique 1.3 Gallon NANO RIPARIUM

- I like the first nano riparium so much that I decided to make another! Like I said in the video, the first was intended to be an angled tank like this, but I decided to save it for another build once I got started. Here's a link to that video in case you missed it: • Making a 0.8 Gallon NA...
I really like how this one turned out as well. What do you think? Looking at it now, I think I'm going to add some botanicals. I could have added more plants, but I like the negative space created by the lack of plants in certain areas. However, I think that botanicals will elevate the design, without taking away from that feature.
Believe it or not a lot of plants will work in this type of setting. Just look for things that like soggy/wet soil or grow in or near bodies of water in nature (i.e. marginal plants). Most aquarium plants will also do really well in a setup like this, but you will most likely have to gradually acclimate them to the open air.
As promised, here is the Plant List: Syngonium podophyllum (variegated), Rabbit's Foot Fern, Alternanthera ficoidea, Purple Waffle Plant, Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Bronze', Tillandsia ionantha 'Red', Salvinia Minima, Micromeria brownei, Ludwigia Narrowleaf, Liverwort and Badge Moss
Lastly, I figured it might be useful to share a video on cutting glass. It's really easy to do and something I won't make a video on. However, this is the best one that I could find on it: • How to Cut Glass & Mir...

Another nano riparium?! You know it! I like how this one turned out a lot. Which do you like better, this one or the first?
Definitely this one
This build is definitely an improvement to the original. Excited to see this grow in
Love this one
this one but the other is good to :)
SerpaDesign love your video! Always a pleasure to watch your art in progress and listen to your narration!
You should write a book about plants for different set ups. I would buy it in a heart beat.
Maybe I am. 😉
I'd also buy it! @@SerpaDesign
yeah great idea, should list all terrarium plants all around the world too
I WOULD BUY IT TOO!
Me too!
"I know you can do it, but you have to give it an honest try."
That's most genuine thing I've heard on the internet in while. I'm actually gonna go look for a jar
It's totally true though. I get a lot of comments from people who want to try it, but won't take the step out of far. You got this!
Did you manage to make one?
Have you ever considered doing a mangrove style build? I live in Florida and I’d love to set up an aquarium that reflects the environment of the mangrove swamps near where I grew up, but I have no idea where to start.
I will some day, but I only want to do it on a large scale, so I'm not sure when I'll have time/space to pull it off.
I am planning to start a 5 gallon tank just to grow mangroves
I like the idea, but wont the mangrove producing sulfur (which im not sure depends on the amount of salt in its enviroment) be off putting?
That would look truly breathtaking
OMG YES!!! Mangroves are sooo amazing!
My mother has kept classic fresh water fish tanks most of my life. She got an outdoor pound set up for Koi about fifteen years ago. She is getting older, and has arthritis. This makes it hard for her to do the water changes. She's quite good with plants, always has been. I'm looking at this and thinking something like this would be really good for her as she's aging. It would allow her to have an aqua scape but cut out the painful and difficult bits of water changes. Maybe something a bit bigger that has a moving water aspect and could play home to some sort of small shrimpy or something.
All that is to say, thank you for the inspiration. I look forward to sharing this video with my mom!
I think that's a great idea! Terrariums could be a good option as well, since you get the same feel, but no water.
I am hoping to get her started on your channel and then see if any of it takes. Thank you so much for the comment
To people who wanna try: if you're afraid of cutting glass (measuring wrong) you can practice on really thick cardboard (like the ones on the back of good drawing pads). They are as thick as glass and will teach you how to account for the glass width, which is really the only tricky part to measuring.
man, i have a fern problem that could develop to be on par with your moss addiction. that rabbit's foot fern is adorable
I forgot what type but it was either brittle or lady fern. Some of them look alike.
If you put a nano tank right next to it with a bridge connecting the two tanks, shrimps would be able to venture between the two water bodies and their habitat would become exponentially bigger as you add more tanks with bridges. I have three tanks connected like that at the moment and my shrimps love it. Love your videos and have a great weekend. Greetings from South Africa!
Cool idea!!!
Okay just checked out your Fish Bridge video and it is EPIC! Subscribed because of your wildlife videos though.
Wow! I took a look at your channel and subscribed. ☺️ Cool DIY projects.
"Unidentified rocks...undisclosed location."
Alright, so they're stolen
Yup
Or they are spy rocks that need to have their identity secret or their cover is blown!
"Hot" rocks???
Didn’t you hear? He got them from Cliff
His neighbour did look the other way to be fair.
Your videos are like therapy. I love them! Never stop. This one was terrific!
😊
Agreed
Wow this looks stunning Tanner. Great work as always! Thankyou for making the start of my Saturday great!
Thanks dude! Glad you liked it.
*Cliff* gave you *stones?*

Who knew mountains could be so generous.
Lol I'm dying 😂
Missing the oak leaf creeping fig haha

Yeeeeeeee Serpa squad represent!!!!!!!!!👌🏼😂
💪💪💪
Beautiful!!! I just built my first aquarium and you were definitely an inspiration. Keep up the good content!
That's awesome to hear!
put some daphnia in there! i've seeded some of my pure planted nano tanks with daphnia and now have multiple cultures to feed my fish
I really liked the use of the little floating plants.
Hey man! Your videos are awesome! This content has gotten me into terrariums and it is honestly one of the most peaceful things to build, care for, and watch change over time. I truly thank you for being so informative about everything you do. Keep up the good work!
This turned out beautifully, great job Tanner. I always look forward to your videos.
A great thing to learn and a great job is a botanist/ master gardener. She showed my brothers and I how to grow exotic plants indoors and outdoors. I feel it would be beneficial to what you do.
@SerpaDesign I've binge watched a dozen of your videos. I love your work! I am a glazier and I'd like to offer 2 tips minor tips.
1. You are pressing the glass cutter too hard into the glass leaving a much more ragged edge. A light score is all you need.
2. Use 180-220 wet or dry aluminum oxide sand paper to knock down the edge.. one quick pass on each side at a slight angle is all you need.
I'll pipe in when I think I can help!
Keep it up!! YOUR AWESOME!!
Nice scape! The only things I would add is some Ludwigia Repens on the right back corner area, and some Spanish moss pieces to each of the tallest two branches. Make them short at first so they can grow. When they reach the water just trim them back and glue them to the tops of the branches again to tuft up the tops. You can even train it to spiral around the branches. definitely add some Malaysian Trumpet Snails, some Daphnia, Cyclops, Seed Shrimps, Triops, freshwater aquatic Isopods, and even add some fresh water mussels and clams.
Dude like, I'm so amazed you can make so many different builds snd still have room, money for lightings, time to care for and everything. It's truly amazing, you are Super human.
7:10 looks like a desert tree of some kind growing out from under the rocks, really neat!
Beautiful tank! Catching up on some of your earlier content atm, and loving it, thanks!
Great looking tank! The hardscape looks amazing and very natural, the plants are also looking awesome, I never knew that badge moss could go underwater. Can't wait for the next tank!
Yeah it does great actually!
I’m learning all the time as I anticipate my first terrarium or riparium-e.g., using egg crate and rubber mat to disperse the weight. Thank you.
Beautifully done Tanner, and I like that you aren't in a rush to stock it with anything, there is so much to enjoy on its own as it grows in.
I appreciate this comment, a lot! Everyone always wants to see it stocked right away.
Stunning as always. That Salvinia is adorable!
That's really pretty. I just finished my first little landscape in a six-liter glass with plants from the forest behind my house, it was fun and it looks great so far, hope everything survives. Thanks for inspiring me to start doing this, this is a great hobby.
honestly i think this is one of my favourite builds so far. amazing work again tanner, keep up the stunning work :)
Thank you! I really like it as well.
I swear I learn something new every time I watch your videos. Thanks much. Your awesome. Beautiful build.
I love watching your videos while I paint
Thanks for the encouragement! A riparium is my next project for sure.
You're welcome!
Great video! You’re really through with your information, really liked this video.
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Another amazing project! Nice job man.
So happy for another video thank you again for everything I have learnt so much from you and have built my own terrarium and got my own isopods basically all thanks to you!
It’s so nice. The plants and glass shape really make it feel open and alive
Pro Tip: When I built aquariums for Deep Sea Aquatics, when we cleaned the silicone from the outside corners, we took the razor blade corner, stuck it into the bottom outside corner of the silicone at a steep angle, then in one smooth motion, sliced up. Really small detail that pays off a lot in the end.
Also, are you wetting your finger when you smooth the silicone out? If not, try it.
It looks fantastic! Thank you for being so thorough in your steps- I have already begun work on my nano riparium and your advice gives me the confidence to not freak out if a mistake is made. 😂
Haha glad I could encourage you!
Every Saturday you post so then you make my day start off AMAZING agin thank you for making my mornings better!
Same here! Saturdays with SerpaDesign!❤🌿🌱🦎🐠
Love to hear that!
It’s nice seeing the progression of your channel and your passion for your craft. Thanks a lot for sharing.
What a work and what a beautiful result.
A charming little riparium!!
I bet you would be awesome at fairy gardens. 😀
I'll probably make a few for by the pond this summer. Perhaps I'll do some videos on them.
Cool 😀 look forward to them!
@@SerpaDesign I would be into that! :)
I honestly think the riparium looks amazing. I might make something like that in the future.
That looks really great. I have been wondering about the process of attaching glass to itself to get that internal seal to work out, so it's good to see the process and how it all comes together.
Looks so Beauty and natural, as always in your projetcs. Making me feels like I should try to build some terrarium. Keep going! Greetings from Poland :)
That's a beautiful set up you made there. It actually looks similar to a couple I've seen in a formicarium/outworld setup on a Ant Keeping channel I watch
Ants Canada?
@@issacyong9119 yeah Ants Canada. I'm guessing you watch his channel too?
I didn't say the name of his channel in the comment because I wanted to be considerate of this channel an not mention another UA-cam channel in the regular comment section.
@@JoeXTheXJuggalo1 yeah, I do watch him too
Another gorgeous setup, ripped right out of nature. Great work Tanner! I'll need a few more tools before I give this a try. I was totally going to ask you if you would stock it but as usual you're one step ahead.
6:25 Cliff sounds like a total badass
I get a lot of inspiration from your designs.
this is absolutely beautiful, i love nano builds, and the unique shape of the tank is honestly so cool.
its something i just never would have thought of doing.
What's not to love here? It's awesome!
Hello Tanner. Please allow me to give you a tip on cutting glass the right way, without the risk of chipping or breaking it the wrong way. After making the cut, do not grab the glass in the middle and do not break it on the side of the table. Maybe this can work with thinner glass, but it will fail with 6 mm or more. Instead, lift the glass and give it a light tap with the cutting tool on the underside of the scratch you made, at one edge only. The scratch will show the start of the crack. Then put the glass flat on the table and put a pencil under the starting crack you just made. Push gently downwards, with both hands, one left and one right from the starting point of the crack at the edge. Do not push in the middle of the glass. The crack will snap clean effortlessly, all over the lenght of the scratch. This way you can cut glass 10 mm or even 12 mm thick like a pro. Very narrow strips can be cut this way. Works all the time. Success!
Have you ever heard of Opae Ula shrimp? They are also called Volcano Shrimp. They are usually sold in those little enclosed "ecospheres" which aren't good for them long term, but they are super hardy shrimp! Perfect for a nano tank.
They don't need water changes or supplemental food, they just eat the algae that develops in a tank. They can be in 1 gallon setups and are super easy!
They require a brackish setup, so there's not a ton of plants you could work with, but you could create a great hardscape and I'm sure you'd love watching them! I would definitely recommend looking them up (a good forum/store is petshrimp.com) and maybe you could do a tank with some in the future!
Awesome and super unique! Love it. You have such a creative mind. Keep up your amazing work!!!
Thank you very much I appreciate your comment!
You’re a genius. I’ve been trying to get my hands in this hobby. Curious, how did you start your channel? Your whole channel is inspiring.
Absolutely adore this build! Ty soooo for sharing your gift with us! You have such a knack for all these things tanks and plants! I plan to try this myself here in the next week or so and will definitely share how it works out... or doesnt, lol!
As always, Tanner, amazing build!
I need a man who's dedicated to me just as much as your dedicated to your terrariums.
I can’t wait to build something like this!!
i love it! cant wait for the ground to thaw here so i can finally make my first native terrarium! inspired by your videos i stumbled on haha
Good luck when you finally get the opportunity to do so!
@@SerpaDesign it'll be a neat adventure into the woods, at least :) hah thanks
Great, I was planning to make a riparian and you helped me choose how I want it to look, thanks
Thanks Cliff!
Love your terrarium/Vivarium/riparian builds that you put animals in
Looks great, I would add the filter because I wouldn't be able to keep up on water change as I like. Plus I haven't really gotten to doing a Riparium not because I'm afraid of failing but rather affording the resources to do this sort of detailed projects and a terrarium is about all I can muster at the moment , being on a shoe string budget really sucks and much of the time have to except hand me downs and scrap to build my art. "Oh well", so It's like whatever I can find. but man if I could watch out I would have a wonderland in my home. thanks for showing me how to do this one day I will get one going.
This looks amazing! Awesome to see all the different kinds of plants in one place.
Beautiful creation
I absolutely LOVE it! I'm inspired to create my own now! Thank you for a great video, as always!
You're like my idol bro. Love your channel, love your builds and everything. :)
As always you do amazing work. I love the fact that the tank is hand made. Just gives it a slightly more creative/original feel. I also like that you aren't stocking it. Not ever thing needs animals to make it look natural. Also you are getting really really good at your info delivery in these videos and your inspirational pieces of advice are awesome! I love what this channel has grown and is growing into :) I'll follow you til the day you stop posting.
Very nice build, Tanner!
Love making tanks, but not done one in a bit. Maybe I will. thanks for sharing and inspiring me. Great job by the way :-).
Loving these scapes, hoping to see livebearers soon.
Aye bro, I'mma keep it real with you, we wanna see some more animals
Looks great!
Could you make a little aquascape? Maybe 2-3-4 gallons?
Love it! You bring so much life to these tiny environments!
Love it Tanner!
Looks really cool, would love a 1 month and 6 month update on this
Really feeling the excitement in your voice
Great job! :)
I don't know if anybody's ever asked you I think you could come up with a pretty cool saltwater tank love to see it
Maybe some day, but it's not something I'm trying to get into any time soon.
One of these days....... great video!
Looks awesome! These vids are a such a saturday ritual.
Thanks! Glad to see you've stuck around this long.
Since I started watching your channel you have absolutely convinced me that the moment I get a place for the setup I will need to try putting together a bio active tank.:) This is my favourite small tank so far. This and the Klein bottle/moss bonsai, I am not sure which one of those two I like more.:)
This one makes me a bit impatient though, should look simply awesome once grown in. I especially like how the fern makes everything blend together into one picture. Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome! I'm glad that you're enjoying my content.
New to the squad...., Very excited to see whats to come for the Nano Riparium.. thank you Tanner for sharing
Squad up! Thanks for joining and I hope you enjoy my future content.
All of your builds are so inspirational
Good word, you're a man of talent
Another beautiful piece of art ! Great work Tanner !
Beautiful! You make it look so simple! Thanks for the inspiration!
very nice scape love the plants tfs😃
It's like building a gingerbread house... but with far fewer carbs... I dig it
I think it turned out really well too !
considered an automated watering system for these ripariums? :) they can be very discrete misty spray heads up above, with an array of outlets which can all be individually timed, could be worth looking into :)
for a lot of people who want ripariums with minimal maintenance, this could be a big step forward and maybe encourage more to take part :D
i'm in the middle of planning a system for my own plants :)
the funniest thing is how you mentioned the rocks were gotten at an undisclosed location, as though you've been doing rock heists
This is really great stuff
Really cool
So cool!
