For the Love of Physics (Walter Lewin's Last Lecture)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 24 гру 2014
- On May 16, 2011, Professor of Physics Emeritus Walter Lewin returned to MIT lecture hall 26-100 for a physics talk and book signing, complete with some of his most famous physics demonstrations to celebrate the publication of his new book For The Love Of Physics: From the End of the Rainbow to the Edge of Time - A Journey Through the Wonders of Physics, written with Warren Goldstein.
Note: Due to a serious complaint against Dr. Lewin, MIT has revoked Dr. Lewin's title of Professor Emeritus as of December 2014.

"...if you hate it, it is because you had a very bad teacher." - such true words.
or you just hate it because you hated it. Or the fact that I has nothing to do with your career path.
Dopa what?
Dopa so what if it has nothing to do with your career, does this mean you must hate it?..
I hate physic not because I have a shit teacher, he's one of the best actually, but because the subject is a pain in the ass to keep inside of my cerebrum. People normally hate things that they don't understand. This is pretty self explanatory.
Dopa understood :)

I honestly don't know how I ended up watching this video, one moment I was watching a teacher break a student's phone and then this. He did make the whole thing interesting, great professor.

Thank you Prof. Walter Lewin! If I were in the audience, I would ask you this question:
Your shirt has strips with colors of rainbow, how fast should you rotate around yourself, for me to see your shirt as white?
probably somewhere near the speed of light
no need to rotate all ya need is the right size of a rain drop to produce that effect
+tod irwin exactly that's the thing..
the faster you rotate the more bend you get similar to bend of rainbow in sky... the faster you rotate yourself the more persceived a bend there will be as sight is largely dependant on fluid. fluid pressure and motion equals change so the apparent change is related to the g forces of the skin in relation to the fluids under the skin with the further addition of the underlying bone mass leading to a slight shift in gravometrics

How does a sexual harassment accusation affect the science or his teaching of it? Removing him from involvement with MIT, and removing his title as punishment, I get. Taking down excellent science is nonsensical...
OK, found details, this sucks... www.insidehighered.com/news/2015/01/23/complainant-unprecedented-walter-lewin-sexual-harassment-case-comes-forward
It makes sense that MIT would want to distance themselves from Lewin. They have no obligation to make his lectures available. As far as the information contained in the lectures go, they're really not anything special and there are plenty of other introductory physics lectures that cover the same material. Classical mechanics hasn't really changed in 200 years.
Did you even read the article?
"Harbi last October sent MIT a packet of more than 100 chat logs, emails, pictures, recordings and screenshots to document the harassment against her and other women. She gave Inside Higher Ed permission to view the contents on condition that they not be published and that names of the other women not be disclosed. The various pieces of evidence include nudity and sexually explicit language."
She had evidence. Grow up and stop going out of your way to bash feminism.
Iamyourmaid Let me guess you're single. Back under your bridge troll
You just shamed a girl for reporting a sexual assault and you're mocking someone for using shaming languages. Glad to know you're proud to be apart of the problem.

Great publication. This demonstration has helped me advance my study of Physics
was it really hard for any teacher to explain m/s/s like that .
No but other teachers can't do I don't know why
Yeah, exactly. I would have appreciated an explanation like that early on. Eventually I figured out that it's seconds squared because (m/s)/s is m/s * 1/s = m/s^2, but for the first long while I could not wrap my head around the unit of acceleration. Physics teachers should be taking notes.
You know, if I had even one teacher like him back in middle or high school I would have paid more attention. He makes the subject interesting in a number of different ways and it's really surprising because physics has always been a subject that I have seen as above my level of comprehension because of how technical and bland it is usually portrayed as. My high school science and math teachers made me want to give myself a lobotomy just to stop the pain of wrapping my mind around some of the calculations but he broke everything down to the point where even just a high school grad like myself could understand it and not one thing he said in this lecture was ever covered in the curriculum of the school I went to. We need more teachers like him in middle and high school so that the students actually want more education to move on to college.
And noted was the fact that he didn't Downtalk to his audience, like so many of today's self-proclaimed 'expert' instructors do in College and Uni nowadays.
This man is an amazing soul and I highly respect him for his humility.
+Riley Schmidt
I like the physics book "Engineering Mechanics - Statics & Dynamics" by R.C. Hibbeler, that book gives a lot of practical examples that really let you see how physics is used in real life.
That book may be a bit too advanced for high school - I think it's intended for college students, actually - but it is really deep and covers a lot of mechanics concepts.
Also, a lot of the first chapters are actually quite familiar and intuitive, and start off with force vectors, moment and pressure over areas (that's the first few chapters of the "Statics" part).
So if you are somewhat familiar with physics and you have studied differential and integral calculus for some time, then you might actually be ready to give that book a try.
You might need some mathematical maturity to feel comfortable with the fairly heavy style of that book (a lot of the examples are in three dimensions, for example), but it's definitely worth a look.
Laurelindo that is a wonderful book!
even though I'm in high school and know most of these concepts, it was so great to watch him teach so wonderfully, wish my teacher was like that

+rockergod789 Maths can be and is just as intriguing. Unfortunately school does far too great of a job at presenting interesting things in the most boring ways, e.g. mindless repetition of "facts" and drills.
*****
and that's what happened. algebra class was my chance to catch up on sleep in high school cause the teacher was BORING.
*****
Tell me about it. I've skipped the majority of classes, including Maths and almost got kicked out of school. Now I have a degree in Mathematics with a minor in Physics and love it. All the other stuff that school put in such a bad light has been getting increasingly interesting to me over the past years as well, it feels like it did more harm than good.
Mind you, it wasn't necessarily always the teacher's fault either, but the forced drills of pointless shit without providing any valuable insight was dreadful.
+rockergod789
Actually, Physics is a type of Math.
It is even commonly called "applied math", because that's exactly what it is.
Laurelindo
i know. i think my problem with math was more related to idiot high school teachers and not being challenged enough, cause i learned more in the first 30 minutes of the first lecture of my college engineering class than i had in months of high school.
before i took the class, i struggled with algebra. after the first 2 days (which were refresher days), i was solving algebraic equations without any trouble.

I`m a 16 years-old boy in Germany and I`m very inspired by the words of this man and his style of teaching.
I love this guy man, every year I come back and watch this, and every year it reminds me of what I know, and what I can do if I listen and put my mind into solving the problems. But still, I'm stuck in a dead end job. One day I'll get to the point where this lecture will seriously open my eyes, and I look forward to it!
Liam, its never too late. Think of your free time and turn those hours playing video games and Netflix into following your passion.
There may be reasons that stop you an illness or a family to support, but truthfully aggregate your free time & I know you can start your physics/maths/engineering journey tomorrow.
All you need to do is start, that's the most difficult thing. Once you begin and look back after one year you will laugh at what you found difficult. You will remember the struggles, the agony of not being able to understand something. Just remember difficulty is relative. You will find adding fractions hard at first, but with practice and time and learning and effort you will be learning the chain rule and integrating by parts.
Then you'll find fourier difficult and so on, learning is it's own reward and if it was easy then everyone would do it. Just let your passion for the subject and becoming more successful and knowledgeable & happy be a driving force in pushing past the frustration.
Don't do it for me or to impress anyone or to meet the expectations of parents or peers. Do it for you. I was like you, I did it I made the sacrifice. Its not over for me yet but the hardest part was starting.
I wish you the best, I can only hope you will be inspiring others like this in two years time.
Kind regards, from a budding engineering & computer scientist close to his cap and gown

OH SH*T
Incredible teacher. Very clear and logical explanations of the equations and measurement error. Coupled with a great sense of humour. The demonstrations are terrific.
He is the best, sad to see him go.
This may have been fairly basic stuff. But I kinda wish I had someone teach it to me as clearly as he did. I had a teacher who graduated with a Masters degree at Cambridge, and did his PhD at Oxford. He certainly knew his stuff, but he was very impatient in teaching us. He would get frustrated really quickly if a student doesn't understand him. I enjoyed Physics, but my teacher made it very uncomfortable to attend lessons because I felt pressured.
This is exactly why schools need to be quizzing their students about how effective they feel their teacher is at teaching. Of course it'd have to be done by an independent body and on a 1-to-1 basis to get a proper result, but better that and having the children being taught than to let them get half taught in the first place.
Chris I felt very pressured because the average grades for physics in my school was extremely low. There were only 2 classes for physics, and I was in the second one which had only 4 students in it. Made it all the more nerve-wrecking when he asked if I understood what he just said. Whenever I said no, he would look fed up and would always repeat his mantra "Then you've got to READ your textbook.".
That's suprising. Oxford phd?
This "lecture" was made for the general public . Thats why it is basic stuff. if he would have shown some which he teaches to MIT students , nobody would have understood a thing.
this is the first physics lecture that I never got bored of throughout the entire duration of it
