  • On May 16, 2011, Professor of Physics Emeritus Walter Lewin returned to MIT lecture hall 26-100 for a physics talk and book signing, complete with some of his most famous physics demonstrations to celebrate the publication of his new book For The Love Of Physics: From the End of the Rainbow to the Edge of Time - A Journey Through the Wonders of Physics, written with Warren Goldstein.
Note: Due to a serious complaint against Dr. Lewin, MIT has revoked Dr. Lewin's title of Professor Emeritus as of December 2014.

I hate physic not because I have a shit teacher, he's one of the best actually, but because the subject is a pain in the ass to keep inside of my cerebrum. People normally hate things that they don't understand. This is pretty self explanatory.

This is a common English mistake. When you're talking about something that isn't actually possible and you know it, you use 'were', not 'was'. For example, "if he were my teacher" or "wish I were here".
Making mistakes isn't bad, what's bad is when you try to correct someone using insults that are actually wrong themselves. Agreed with +Jess D .

It makes sense that MIT would want to distance themselves from Lewin. They have no obligation to make his lectures available. As far as the information contained in the lectures go, they're really not anything special and there are plenty of other introductory physics lectures that cover the same material. Classical mechanics hasn't really changed in 200 years.

You know, if I had even one teacher like him back in middle or high school I would have paid more attention. He makes the subject interesting in a number of different ways and it's really surprising because physics has always been a subject that I have seen as above my level of comprehension because of how technical and bland it is usually portrayed as. My high school science and math teachers made me want to give myself a lobotomy just to stop the pain of wrapping my mind around some of the calculations but he broke everything down to the point where even just a high school grad like myself could understand it and not one thing he said in this lecture was ever covered in the curriculum of the school I went to. We need more teachers like him in middle and high school so that the students actually want more education to move on to college.

I like the physics book "Engineering Mechanics - Statics & Dynamics" by R.C. Hibbeler, that book gives a lot of practical examples that really let you see how physics is used in real life.
That book may be a bit too advanced for high school - I think it's intended for college students, actually - but it is really deep and covers a lot of mechanics concepts.
Also, a lot of the first chapters are actually quite familiar and intuitive, and start off with force vectors, moment and pressure over areas (that's the first few chapters of the "Statics" part).
So if you are somewhat familiar with physics and you have studied differential and integral calculus for some time, then you might actually be ready to give that book a try.
You might need some mathematical maturity to feel comfortable with the fairly heavy style of that book (a lot of the examples are in three dimensions, for example), but it's definitely worth a look.

All the other stuff that school put in such a bad light has been getting increasingly interesting to me over the past years as well, it feels like it did more harm than good.
Mind you, it wasn't necessarily always the teacher's fault either, but the forced drills of pointless shit without providing any valuable insight was dreadful.

i know. i think my problem with math was more related to idiot high school teachers and not being challenged enough, cause i learned more in the first 30 minutes of the first lecture of my college engineering class than i had in months of high school.
before i took the class, i struggled with algebra. after the first 2 days (which were refresher days), i was solving algebraic equations without any trouble.
so yeah, the hate was probably misdirected. but you never really know how bad things were until the status quo changes, right?

Liam, its never too late. Think of your free time and turn those hours playing video games and Netflix into following your passion.
There may be reasons that stop you an illness or a family to support, but truthfully aggregate your free time & I know you can start your physics/maths/engineering journey tomorrow.
All you need to do is start, that's the most difficult thing. Once you begin and look back after one year you will laugh at what you found difficult. You will remember the struggles, the agony of not being able to understand something. Just remember difficulty is relative. You will find adding fractions hard at first, but with practice and time and learning and effort you will be learning the chain rule and integrating by parts.
Then you'll find fourier difficult and so on, learning is it's own reward and if it was easy then everyone would do it. Just let your passion for the subject and becoming more successful and knowledgeable & happy be a driving force in pushing past the frustration.
Don't do it for me or to impress anyone or to meet the expectations of parents or peers. Do it for you. I was like you, I did it I made the sacrifice. Its not over for me yet but the hardest part was starting.
I wish you the best, I can only hope you will be inspiring others like this in two years time.
Kind regards, from a budding engineering & computer scientist close to his cap and gown

I had a teacher who graduated with a Masters degree at Cambridge, and did his PhD at Oxford. He certainly knew his stuff, but he was very impatient in teaching us. He would get frustrated really quickly if a student doesn't understand him. I enjoyed Physics, but my teacher made it very uncomfortable to attend lessons because I felt pressured.

This is exactly why schools need to be quizzing their students about how effective they feel their teacher is at teaching. Of course it'd have to be done by an independent body and on a 1-to-1 basis to get a proper result, but better that and having the children being taught than to let them get half taught in the first place.
