    "Footnotes for Kanye"
    You look hungry,
like that girl don't make you no fried chicken
    or macaroni & cheese
like she don't feel you on the inside,
    like you haven't had a home-cooked-meal
    since your momma died.
    You look like
you lost the Psalm in your own song--
like you want to talk to God
    but you're afraid
because ya'll ain't spoke in so long .*
Do you tell you daughter about me, *
    how we were bittersweet, *
"to never mess with entertainers because they always leave?
He'll get on and he'll leave your ass for a white girl" *
and he'll give her your style, your language, your waist
damn near try to give her your face,
and somewhere in his Post Traumatic Twisted Fantasy *
    he'll make it all okay
but what's the worth in loving a man
    whose lost his smile anyway?
When Kim fucks up the lyrics to the College Dropout *
like them white folks used to fuck up your name, *
do you pretend not to notice?
Do you regret the Marilyn Monroe in your decision,
and wish you could've taken Billie Holiday as your bride?
Do you ever want to run back to your wedding day
and have it all over on the South-side?
Do you wake up in the middle of the night and think
that she wasn't the right girl
    like you should've found
one of them "i like art type girls." *
Can you hear all the black kids calling your name
wondering why the boy who rapped
about his momma getting arrested for the sit-ins
    didn't sit-in---
why he traded in his Nat Turner for Ralph Lauren.
Do you know how many kids
at the protest had your sneakers on?--
    None of them.
Do you know how many of your songs
    were played at the protest?
    All of them.
Could your hear all of the lights,
    the flashing lights,
    the new slaves,
    the runaways--
    on their road to redemption
    waiting for Malcolm West
to have the whole world at attention.
    Nigga they got you quiet!
Like how come only at awards shows-- he riots.
    Maybe Yeezus was all talk.
Jesus never needed Adidas to walk.
    Why is he outlining sneakers
when the South-side is outlined in chalk?
Can someone go and find the man
who could make a diamond with his own b(e)ar(e) hands, *
    we are looking for you.
Because these kids still want to be-- just like you *
they want to rap and make soul beats-- just like you *
even though you just not you.
Even though you traded in your spaceship *
to buy back your 40 acres in a mull,
purchased the plantation and master's daughters too.
Nigga why you got these white folks claiming you
    like they built you,
    like they made you,
    like they polished you,
like the readied them a good nigga for the picking,
like they got you for sale,--
    oh how they love Kanye
lets put him all in front of the store *
    like you their black boy,
you forgot you black boy? *
They got you lost in this world? *
You getting black-mailed for that white girl? *
You don't see how your lies is effecting me,
you don't see how our lives were supposed to be? *
And I never let a nigga get the close to me,
and you ain't cracked up to what you were supposed to be.*
I guess its bitter sweet poetry. *

Jasmine Mans is not simply a poet. Jasmine Mans is a pressure point, a discomforting pressure point necessary for hip-hop, Black Arts, and our generation of young scholars.
Today we release Mans' poem "FootNotes for Kanye". This isn't just one poet's interpretation of Kanye West, this isn't just one opinionated babble, it's...

for me I think the black woman has been put down and disrespected for so long that they're born practically insecure and self conscious, cause of society and us black men. Even though I didn't like black women when I was younger cause I always felt they dissed me cause of my interests and/or mannerisms, I'm older and appreciate ya'll.

Screw you, Kanye never changed. The world changed around him and he just found different ways of expressing himself. He is still one of the greatest innovators to the music, fashion and philosophy industries, every album he puts out is altering the way we perceive music. Surely after all the work he's done and all he's suffered you can't give him a bit of leeway on who he loves?

If you hate white people the way you imply you do then why allow a race you hate teach you hateful ways? TO EVERYONE SAYING SHE IS HIS EX-GIRLFRIEND: It's not true! She wrote this as a disappointed fan. I attended one of Jasmine Man's live readings and she explained the story behind it. She said that College Dropout was what made her want to write poetry and that as a fan of Kanye she was upset when she saw how far he'd strayed from his original message and how she doesn't think he's properly giving back to the black community that pretty much gave him his career. She printed out almost every work of art Kanye's ever done and highlighted everything she saw that was contradictory and then wrote this poem about it. Jasmine initially imagined this poem as being said by an old lady. She imagined Kanye going back to his old neighborhood in Chicago and some grandma coming up to him and inviting him into her kitchen and then just ripping into him like this. But then she realized an older person probably wouldn't know all these cultural references and his songs so she rewrote it from the perspective of a lover he might have left behind in Chicago when he went chasing after fame. Jasmine Mans never dated Kanye. I don't even think she's met him. She took artistic license with this.
Anyway long rant but basically it's a beautiful poem so stop dismissing this as some salty ex-girlfriend bullshit because it's not.

As a poet this is absolutely awesome. The prose are superb. The message however is a bitter angry woman who hasn't gotten over it. But the poem itself was great.

You're a genius. I have listened to this incredible work of yours where you performed for a live audience perhaps a hundred or so times over the years.
You've created such richness and depth with your references/timing/storytelling. There is so much to unpack here with every gut punching line you've justly stated.
Ty for your work and wish you every success and blessing on your journey.

This is one of the most beautiful messages I have ever seen this is exactly what the majority of our young talent needs to hear today especially black men and they need to realize that there is much more to our unity than they think and how much they are giving up by giving themselves to their enemy

    • @Jonesmarc1

funny how she says that but he been doing that since the beginning of his career all of sudden it's a problem now

    • @hope4me847
      @hope4me847 7 років тому

but that wasn't all he protested. Kanye was always outspoken about everything. Remember, "George Bush doesn't care about black people," unprompted on live TV? Now we only hear of him protesting for him and his rich friends.

    • @Jonesmarc1
      @Jonesmarc1 7 років тому

Hope4Me he protests for artists mostly black artists and he's an artist himself so it makes sense he talks about social issues in interviews and in his music instead of on national tv that simple

    • @hope4me847
      @hope4me847 7 років тому

You're suggesting that she's saying that it's a problem that he protests at award shows now, when he's always done it. She never said that his protesting at award shows was a problem, but that he's ONLY protesting at award shows now, when there are more meaningful things to speak up about- things that he would take up before, but all of sudden aren't of importance to him now. You mentioned him speaking up for mostly black artists. I'm gonna disagree. He's not speaking up for artists in general. He's been speaking up for his very rich friends- people in his own unique club, including his white wife. He has a whole roster of underutilized people on his label. I ain't seen him go on stage for any of them. He's all about promoting him and his elite set of friends, as if racism doesn't exist for the underdog- as if racism isn't a factor unless it can be blamed for him being under-appreciated in other artistic endeavors like fashion.
