    Championship standings (at the time)
    1. Mansell - 39 years old (40 in August 1993)
    2. Andretti - 53 years old
    3. Fittipaldi - 46 years old (47 in December 1993)
    4. Luyendyk - 39 years old (40 in September 1993)
    Wow. Pretty different from today

Most of them were F1 drivers that came over. Of course Mansell was World Champion.Mario Andretti was old and never even placed, with the best car.Of course we know when he was younger he was F1 and indy car champion. And of course Fittapaldi was a F1 champion. So you see, the drivers now in Indy are young not so great drivers. Back then Indy went all over the world. And half the races were road courses. And they were faster than the cars now.

And these 3 (Mansell, Fittipaldi, and Andretti) are all World Champions With both Fittipaldi and Andretti winning 3 Indy 500s between them.

notice that was a pass round the OUTSIDE, nobody told mansell that you cant pass round the outside here especially when its slippery, fantastic pass.
great commentary and sums up why mansell was my boyhood hero he needed a space hopper to fit his balls in!
he pulled ridiculous moves like that often in f1 too

Not that astonishing considering that the F1 drivers are the best drivers in the pinnacle of motor sport. You have only 20 of them at any given time + test drivers of course, but that's it. You have to be the best of the best to get a drive in that sport. And within those 20 you have approximately 5 that are standing out above the rest.

As someone who lived and breathed Indy all my young life Mansell was the most impressive of the guys who came over in that era. You see it with F1 drivers frequently. They're so used to trusting their skills that they believe they can conquer the track. Indy is fickle, though. Mansell ran well. Alonso ran well. Fittipaldi won it multiple times. But Piquet broke his legs. It's such a dangerous place. Just three years later Scott Brayton was killed and he was one of the top drivers on the circuit.

If so he had it because he had shown himself worthy of it. End of story.
There's no way around that he came into CART as a rookie, at a time that was arguably more competitive than Formula 1 and was champion.

Did you watch this video?....particularly the last restart?
I guess you meant something else.
You should watch some of Mansell's interviews (after he retired from Indycar) here on UA-cam where he says that he's glad not to be racing in the U.S. anymore, calling it, quote, "too fast"...a hell of an admission from a race driver as great as Mansell.

And your point is Peter?? Nigel Mansell proved himself a worthy champion, a very exciting and versatile driver...only wish we had someone today like him, there has been a lot of drivers over the years who have had the best package and havn't delivered although i do think F. Alonso puts the effort in with clearly inferior equipment, when all said and done everybody tries to have the best of everything for their team, Newman/Haas wanted him because he was auguably the best at the time...so??

The most impressive indy 500 win was Jacques Villeneuve's 505 mile race win. And it turns out that both Damon Hill and Jenson Button outpaced Villeneuve when they were his teammates. Mind you, all 3 drivers were world champions at some point so they are of the same elite calibre.

    • @theant9821
      @theant9821 Рік тому

Villeneuve had a dominant car and won the championship, most of his career he struggled to keep up with his teammates. He wouldn't have been world champion if Williams kept Damon.
Jacques was not of that calibre, his father was though Gille Villeneuve should have been a multiple world champion.
Ronnie Peterson would have beaten Andretti if it weren't for him not being allowed to overtake his teammate in his contract.
I think Mario is overrated, but he's certainly far above Jacques Villeneuve who would have been an also ran his entire career if it weren't for the dominance of Williams in the 90s. He was an also ran after Williams dropped him.
