  • This is the story of Loch Maree. Once one of Scotland's greatest sea trout fisheries, poorly placed aquaculture has triggered its collapse.
Our salmon farm reform campaign is working towards a future where there is a balance between salmon farming and environment. Our petition has triggered the launch of a Parliamentary Inquiry into the effects of salmon farming on wild fish, scheduled for early 2018.
Closed containment is the only realistic solution.
Together we can reverse the damage!

I can confirm this sequence of events, as a person who has closely watched another magnificent sea trout fishery on the Isle of Skye mirror the decline in sea trout stocks described in relation to Loch Maree. Again, this coincided with the establishment of open cage salmon farming in the locality in the 1980s. All larger mature fished disappeared from the system and catches plummeted to less than a tenth of their former levels and remain there.

What a truly sad situation, it is about time these farms were removed and the environment allowed to recover.

I remember the seatrout catch on Ballynahinch Castle where I fished as a boy on the West of Ireland dropped from 1300 to 13 in 1989...it's a fucking disgrace

The pleasures of the Salmon and Sea Trout Fisheries in Scotland used to be unaffordable for the many and in reach for a few wealthy individuals only (often foreign). It is therefore not surprising that general public interest in this sad topic is minimal. However, to keep these Salmon Farms up and running can only be a downhill spiral. Hopefully the Scottish Government sees sense and makes a bold brave move to ban them all. .. And ban elite fishing practice in the same breath.

That's the results of greed. All is soon depleted, destroyed, like so many land species and the ocean. The Orange Roughy?
The answer to this is to create a trap for the lice.
Something on or in the fish attracts them. Recreate it in a trap and remove or kill them.

What do you mean by elite fishing practice m vl? I am assuming you don't mean general course, sea and river fishing? Do you mean specifically Salmon and Sea trout in Scotland? Cheers.

@@user-zc5ft9nw9b Elite fishing has gone on for a long time. Elite fishing means folk (wealthy, foreign) pay handsome money to catch (and now release) a salmon. While locals have been hounded at the same time for “poaching”. Not a problem anymore as there’s hardly any fish left.

@@mvl6827 locals should support their own local water and pay the fees to fish in my opinion. Local fishing clubs do their best to support the community and the locals should do their part to support the clubs. Too many people going down and leaving their rubbish, catching fish and not releasing them properly and going down late at night with nets an gaffs catching hen fish full of eggs and killing them 🤷🏻‍♂️ quite shite that is it not?

Here in the state of Maine USA we have the highest population of brook trout and we are the only state in the country that has wild Atlantic salmon spawning bcuz the state built fish ladders and fishing wild searun Atlantic salmon is illegal. We also have a healthy population of landlocked Atlantic salmon.. so much in fact we can fish for and keep a fish or two.. bcuz we do not have farms like they do on this video and we back fish over business
