I'm glad that someone cared about sharing this experience for those of us who dream of doing what you do. This was exactly what I needed to see. I love watching sports and I've always wondered about the workflow. I've been looking for this type of video for almost a year. Thanks
Awesome to hear this, thank you for the comment. I was doing the same exact thing! I saw that there are no good videos on this topic, so I figured I'd make my own video :)
Your videos were a massive help - this video was particularly inspirational. Been covering athletics events for the past year and finally got my first professional job covering a large multisport event next month! Keep up the good work.
Seth this rocks!!! I'm moving over to photography from video (been shooting windsurfing in Maui for 15 years) and this is EXACTLY where I'm headed-- Thanks a ton man!!!
Great video Seth, every time I watch football I spend a good amount of time watching the photographers on the sideline, this gives me an idea of what goes on behind the scenes. Thanks for taking the time to make this.
Fantastic Video!!! Thanks for sharing!!! I've been searching for sports photography workflow info and this video gave me a great understanding!!! Keep up the great work!
Great stuff, Seth. There are so few day-in-the-life-of type videos out there and you really did a great job putting me in your shoes as you worked an event. I'm doing a lot of research now so I feel better prepared when I start shooting sports hopefully later this year. thanks again!
I totally get ya when you say it doesn't feel like work. I feel elated I get to do something I love everyday.Whether I'm on the field from youth to pros, whatever the weather. Thanks Seth for taking the time.
Hey man, great job with this video and even more so on reaching your dreams! I've been making some UA-cam content recently and find it interesting to see someone else in the process of growing their channel from the beginning. Good luck; I look forward to more content from you!
This video is great. Good look into what you guys go through. I haven't had a chance to skim through your other videos, I just subscribed. Just wondering how you got started. Or any kind of advice you could give would be great.
Thank you so much for this! Do you have a video that outlines the camera shooting settings for photographing football soccer.....e.g: Do you use AI Servo? What is theM] minimum Shutter Speed? Which focusing point do you use....or does the camera pick up relevant action somehow with some sort of setting you can select? Many thanks (y)
Hi Seth, I showed your video to my classes today and it was a hit. My one suggestion would be to drop in a few still frames, like when you're editing, so there's not quite so much jerking around with the speeded up sections. Nevertheless, you hit the mark squarely on the head with your commentary. I loved it!
I guess I am a bit old fashioned. I learned photography on film cameras in college . The ability to look at an image was not available at that time. We had to maintain good technique in order to insure we had publishable images. When shooting sports I never chimp. The reason being if you missed a shot no one is going to repeat that winning action shot for you. Its over forever gone. If I am shooting portraits I will chimp because the poses are repeatable in case of closed eyes etc. Just my opinion from shooting over 20 years. Keep up the good work and thanks for the video.
A great view behind the scenes of what the job is. One of the issues most aspiring photographers don't think about are things like the description of what the photo is about and who is in it using photo mechanic.... Not really explained is how you find the jobs and who does the hiring. It sounded like you upload your photos and they go to an auction block and you get paid by the photos that sell. Or are your photos strictly available to the client who gave you the assignment and if you get shots they like and are going to use then they buy just the photos they want. If they don't buy the photos do you maintain the rights to sell them elsewhere?
Thanks a lot for your video. I shoot fashion shows and was thinking getting an intern to sort out photos for me in Lightroom in between shows. I believe I will skip that hassle and use Photo Mechanic since I see you do it, and other Getty photogs use it.
awesome video mate.. brilliant insight in to the world of sports photography. So hard to get any info from anyone, feels like no one wants to give away their secrets! thanks again. how did you get to where you are now?
Awesome video! Has to be one of the best Point-of-view shooting videos. Great explanation and insight into this stuff, I'm really working hard towards this a a career for me so it's really helps. :)
Seth Sanchez I'm from Melbourne, Australia. Definitely a 1Dx review would be quite cool I think, and also maybe a video of how you got to the position your in? Keep up the great work! Cheers, Mitch.
How did you get the job itself? I'm onyl 23, but have shot over 100 weddings (among other events) and it has always been my dream to work as a sports photographer.
Seth: This is awesome. I always wonder how photographers worked through the process of photographing sports. Thank you for the insite and all the great tips you gave. Hopefully, when I get to that level I will be able to lean on your video to get me through my first shoot.
Thanks for the comment! I am happy to hear that this video caught your interest and helped :) If you ever have any questions, feel free to add me on facebook, my facebook link is on this youtube profile.
Great video! I shoot for a local newspaper but I'm planning on applying to photo agencies with tighter deadlines so this video was useful. Which photo agency do you shoot for?
This is great. I mostly shoot wrestling competitions. I "chimp" though I guess I've never knew what it was called. There were times I didn't and had about 10 crappy photos that were useless.
Would recommend tagging the photos in camera instead of deleting them. Then you don't lose a shot you might have meant to keep, etc. And you can just use the drop down tagged option to see only the photos you tagged. At least that's what I do.
I will be making a video on this topic, but to get to this kind of level, you have to build a solid portfolio with eye catching images that really stand out above the average action shots you typically see. The video will go into more detail :)
awesome video dude, im looking too for the same, and like you i've been going up from event to event...going from local sports to world games, UCI cycling championships, now im looking towards UEFA events in europe like Euro, Champions League...etc. Now I got an idea of this pro football enviroment thanks to you, awesome video, sorry my english is awful
Thanks... seth hey I'm a wildlife photographer out of colorado the same apply with any job.don't forget to eat lite and bring camel with water/energy foods to tie you over u til events over. I only use the 500f/4 lens when covering baseball, soccer and golf Oh... yeah music to put you in the mood.
Hi Seth! Your videos are full of great information - I do not shoot mainstream sports but it is so cool to know about them more. Thanks for that! ;-) ...You also motivated me to start my own channel about outdoor and extreme sports photography. If you are interested in such - check it out! Thanks ;-)
+JGPhotos Lightroom is way too slow for jobs like that. You wanna have your photos sent to the client as soon as possible. Photomechanic is really fast for viewing, tagging and sending images out to the client.

This is exactly what I want to be doing when I'm older and I found this really interesting! More videos like this pleaseeeeee!! :)))
Will do :)

Great video! I'm just starting to shoot for my university's athletic department.
This video is great. Good look into what you guys go through. I haven't had a chance to skim through your other videos, I just subscribed. Just wondering how you got started. Or any kind of advice you could give would be great.
Very cool video. I have been trying to get in to shoot some college football games.. seems next to impossible. Any tips on getting into the field?

We all do it, so no worries :) It has to be done (when the time is appropriate).
is there anywhere we can see your work ? Flickr ect ?
Would recommend tagging the photos in camera instead of deleting them. Then you don't lose a shot you might have meant to keep, etc. And you can just use the drop down tagged option to see only the photos you tagged. At least that's what I do.
Do you shoot sports photography in RAW? =)

As long as you got paid to do it. Please tell me you got paid to do the job,...not just if your images sell either.
