Thank you Helen for your informative video. This is an interesting method I should try . I just can't figure out how I can judge the depth of the concrete I put the mosaic into before removing the paper so that my mosaic is not fully submerged and disappeared into concrete.

Glad it was helpful! You need to get yourself a notched trowel so that you can spread the adhesive to the right depth. If your tiles are 4mm deep and you use a trowel which has 3mm deep notches then that stops the mosaic from getting submerged.

Thanks Juliana! Unfortunately I don't know where to buy it in the US but if you approach a mosaic materials supplier I am sure that they will be able to either supply it or point you in the right direction.

I fully understand the paperback method. What I'm having a hard time understanding is where you did the portrait piece on paper and slid it into place on your large church design. I'm trying to understand how the tessera glues to the substrate through the paper in that design. Could you please explain that method?

The mosaic in this case is made in reverse so the image you see of the portrait is viewed from the back. When the mosaic is finished, you prepare a smooth concrete bed and flip the mosaic into it - pressing the tiled side down into the concrete with the paper side up. When the concrete has begun to set, you dampen the paper and peel it off revealing the front. I hope that helps!

@@HelenMilesMosaics I studied the reverse method in Ravenna Italy in my mid twenties. Creating Byzantine mosaics for three months is one of my best memories. I can’t wait to see the finished piece. I had originally planned to start a school here in Canada; but marriage, children and life got in the way. Still. Thanks for the memories. 😊

@@MsK-xm7vw That sounds like an amazing experience. I hope you find an opportunity to return to mosaics once life stops getting in the way 😀

I am working with old tiles, they only have one side colored. Sadly, I can not use this method, because i wont see the design if tiles are upside down.

Yes, this method wont work with tiles that are only coloured on one side.

There is a proverb in Greece that says: "Don't drown in a spoonful of water".
Dear friend. For 55 years I have ONLY used reverse digitization and in addition to Orsoni I also use old tiles. Well, there is a solution to your problem. Create lines on the back of the tiles with colored pencils.
