It's always fascinating to hear the birds in the morning and noticing that one starts a call and somewhere in the distance another responses and it goes on back and forth. It's like they talking to each other.
I live n Atlanta, GA. One afternoon I heard a loud frantic chorus of birds in my backyard. After a minute or so the noise drew me to the window to see what was amiss. The unwanted visitor was a large owl on a nearby branch. The mixture of birds continued their loud shrill and screams until the invading owl flew away. After the owl’s departure....dead silence! Wow!
I just had the best time chillin on the back patio, watching this, and listening to an amazing chorus of birds singing in the trees above me. Thank you
This is cool, I was just sitting out in my backyard today and just paid attention to the birds chirping and there were so many different types of chirping they were using
They are talking to each other. Some people on this world are able to understand it and know if a predator is near just thru hearing what the birds say
I love the fact I get to listen to the birds in my area (suburban London) at night. I know without a doubt that I am hearing the same species (if not the same individuals) talking EVERY night between trees - It fascinates me, they chirp harmoniously, allowing each other to finish while the other begins its response, perhaps overlapping (if they even do) by about 2 seconds. I hear patterns but the patterns are slightly different when in different orders (almost always hearing sound patterns in different orders), almost like tenses within our own speech. My memory isn't perfect but I have a knack for picking up very small details, what I am hearing is intricate, very very advanced!
Great stuff!! As a bird photographer I find this very helpful. Admittedly I had a hard time grasping the call versus song in the past. It’s really interesting how you broke this down. I also think you could expand your channel and be very successful on UA-cam. Your voice is really clear. Thanks again!
I've recently got back in to photography, however I now live in Spain and I need to translate my knowledge from English to Spanish besides that I'm an English teacher. So, now I'm looking at doing a topic with local Spanish birds in the area so to create a bit of interest with my students and hopefully to expand there interest and general knowledge. Just to add something, have you noticed that birds tend to sing more just before the weather changes and it starts to rain? A friend of mine pointed it out and I think he's right. Once again, thank you.
Yes definitely, and also during calm weather, first thing in the morning because it's quiet. Their songs travel longer distance... It's fun to track all the different conditions that lead birds to sing and be more active :-)
I'm from European country and studying biology in college. We have a few classes of "English in biology" and I'm making a presentation about birds songs so it is really nice that I found that video. I was actually looking for something like this, thanks!
Thank you for the great video, I just wanna add that bird's communication is very complex and it is not just based on songs and call, you have to add body language, position and beak direction of the bird when he is singing or calling because he is allways moving even 1mm, sometimes he dancing when singing or calling, u have to look attentively at not only him but especially around him, where is he, I mean he's position on the tree or elsewhere, bird's sounds around him and the call back or singing back from others same or not same species of birds, all of that plus weather who can influence him and his decisions to do that call or that singing, his movements touching tree branche using his beak to mark his territory and been aggressive against other males, exposing his colors to females...etc
Thank you i actually got a lot out of this and Managed to Give Common Calls that they are not scared or even followed me ... i got some Click Calls to some Species that they are not Scared . And i can just walk by without scaring them IT IS AMAZING to Communicate to Birds
It may be sad, but I feel like they may sometimes be listening for a response to know if everyone made it through the night. Similar to a morning roll call.
It would certainly stand out if Bob the Robin suddenly stopped singing one day. I think other birds would definitely notice. It might also affect territory sizes as they adjust their habits for new resources.
I have crows that come daily...they call, but the calls are different. Sometimes I think they are calling others to come because I feed them. I will look for a video specific to crows. Enjoyed this video, thank you.
I've written about crows a fair bit on my website nature-mentor.com/crow-language/ Crow calls work differently from what's in this video, but it's pretty easy to get the hang of how it works :-)
Very intresting stuff. I wake e morning at around 3 here in Belize. They start with a few chirps around 330 and peak about 430. I always wanted to know what they are saying.
I'm here because there's a bird in our window and the bird called me and it's chirping and looking at me and I don't understand the bird that bird is looking at me and the bird is not afraid of me even tho I'm already at the window and that's more than 5 mins talk I'm asking the bird what does he/she saying but the bird keeps chirping sometimes stops chirping and he does chirp one by one slowly he/she thought I could understand him/her if he/she slowly chirp haha how cute it is.
Right off the bat I'm gonna be a dick. Are you Canadian? I swear it's not aboot your accent. Lol jk great video, I wana learn bird language like the people in Turkey wish me luck lol

Hi Alex, thanks for sharing. Do they do that all year long? Or is it just certain seasons?

What about visual communication?
From now on I'll definitely pay more attention to when I chatter versus when I yell, lol👀

They also yell when their kids are in danger
