    Am I the only one who actually wanted a peaceful game for a long time? I get so tired of the fact that in almost any game there's something that wants to kill you, or at least set you back. Even some adventure games do that, but sometimes you just want to relax - explore, do stuff and know that nothing here's gonna hurt you, you're safe, you can do whatever you want without fear. I dunno, it's just something that I'm longing to experience.

      Why don't you play Stardew Valley, or Subnautica (which has a peaceful option)

    • @lwaves
      @lwaves 7 років тому +16

      I was looking for all that too. Sometimes the combat in these types of games can get repetitive very quickly and become a chore more than being fun/exciting. It's the lack of puzzles, even basic ones, that's putting me off this one so far, but we'll see.

      there are tons of games that are peaceful and do it right. this one looks like its missing the right parts.

    • @Cassssssss
      @Cassssssss 7 років тому +6

      I totally get that, and same. Heck, when I used to play Minecraft I never took it off peaceful. But I guess with this game there might just be a lack of reason to feel invested. A beautiful, extensive world is one thing, but good world design has multiple facets to it and unfortunately it seems like the balance was just off here - like things are missing. I don't know of course, I haven't played it yet and I hope to be proven wrong, but I'd want a game like this to get me invested and it so far seems like it would struggle to do so.

    I’ve been debating on getting this game for months now. I’m super indecisive when it comes to games because I often worry that I’ll expect something that’s different from what the game may bring. I got this game a few days ago and it’s the best game I’ve played in a while. With the currently popular games on the market being shooters, gore, etc. (Nothing wrong w those they’re fun as well) this game is a nice break from that. There’s surprisingly so much to do and it’s incredibly lovely to look at. I play for hours on end every day. I NEVER comment on posts but for this game I felt that I had to let people know that it’s worth every penny!

    I got this game Thursday and found that I've been unable to stop playing! This game definitely isn't for everyone, but I found the lack of combat charming. This is a game that I would turn to if I was stressed out and needed to escape for a little while. If I wanted to play something with combat and an open world, like WOW or Legend of Zelda, then I know where to turn, but this game isn't supposed to be like those titles. It's its own, separate thing from them, that is relaxing and combat free. I agree that, sometimes, the characters are unattractive, but not always. For me, this has definitely become one of my favorite games.

      to be fair this game has probably been in development for at least a year, so the fact the intro is similar to zeldas is no more than a coincidence. Its clear they've taken a lot of inspiration from of the legend of zelda franchise though.

    My all time favorite game is Bloodborne and the Souls series. I spend all my time between those games and Destiny. Occasionally I need a game that doesn't require thinking, is relaxing and beautiful. This hit the mark. It's mindless and I'm okay with that. Fwiw I paid $15 by preordering it from the Play store. I think $15 is the right price for this game.
    PS: I also agree with the review, but is a buy for my situation.

    Great review as always. As someone that has never played, and can't play Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, I was looking forward to this. The lack of combat didn't bother me but I was hoping for some kind of puzzles at various points and the lack of them has made me rethink getting this. I might watch a partial playthrough first.

    • @lwaves
      @lwaves 7 років тому

      +Steven Hatton Yeah, BOTW does look great and it's the first Zelda I've had any interest in, mainly for the open world exploration side. I just have zero interest in a handheld or a Wii U. If only they'd relax and push their games to other systems more than they do.
      I've been tempted to go the emulator route but haven't done anything about it yet.

  • @kendram6767
    @kendram6767 6 років тому +13

    Having played through a chunk of this game... Agreed. I was always really into games like harvest moon and animal crossing so I thought this would be similar. It was cheap and looked nice so I bought it.
    At first I loved the game but the more I played it the more empty it felt. Even without a story, animal crossing manages to be more engaging and worthwhile.
    Because yonder has a story you expect more from it. But the farms were useless after placing, the npcs were bland, the story has me waiting in game days to progress (ie I'll make this story important item for you but it'll take 3 days so go do something else), and I find myself with nothing to do. I can't even craft and sell things to hoard money because the game's economy is trade based. This makes much of the crafting useless. Story and achievements aside, there few other goals to work towards.
    And while the world is beautiful it can be very hard to maneuver. There's one cat I found that I couldnt reach no matter how I jumped. Looked up a walkthrough. It said to jump the rocks like I had been doing. I finally got it after trying for a whole hour.

  • @russmawson6744
    @russmawson6744 7 років тому +3

    I bought the game before this review, the review sums it up very well from what I've played (30 mins).
    it's not usually the sort of game I'm into, you couldn't pay me to play Minecraft (but I think that's the art style putting me off) but it seems fun.
    I paid £15.19 on psn with 20% off for preordering.
    I think for that price it's decent.
    I reckon for a sequel or maybe even an expansion adding combat would make it more engaging but as it is it's a fun game and I smiled playing it and I'm looking forward to getting stuck back in. what more can you ask for.
    good and fair review though

  • @eiadtarabulsi
    @eiadtarabulsi 7 років тому +1

    That's two reviews in a very short amount of time. I must say that I am very impressed. Well, truth be told, I've been impressed by your work for quiet some time. You have definitely set the bar as far as quality videos are concerned. I'm sure glad that I subscribed to your channel when I did, because I don't regret a single moment of it. As far as Yonder the Cloud Catcher Chronicles is concerned, its basically Legend of Zelda Wind Waker without the combat and without Link. It feels very similar to Story of Seasons and Harvest Moon which is a good thing since I'm a big fan of those 2 games anyway. As much as I love some good combat and action in video games, its nice to play a video game where I can just sit back and relax and Yonder the Cloud Catcher Chronicles fits the bill in that regard. The game is very colorful which I appreciate. Environmental sounds, sound effects and music are pretty good. Its a shame that the controls are a bit of a nuisance though. The inclusion of puzzles and combat would've been nice as well. There is no story to speak of. On top of that, the game lasts only 6 or 7 hours. By the way, developer Prideful Sloth, has some team members who used to work on the Batman Arkham series, so suffice to say, my hopes were pretty high. I could see myself buying this game after a bit of a discount, but for $20 that's a bit much for what I'd be getting in return. That aside, thanks Karak for another awesome video!

    Greetings from Norway, Karak, thanks for the concise and honest reviews! Been watching you for a while now, and after losing faith completely in mainstream reviewers, you've become my go-to guy for games reviews. At first I was amazed at the speed of your commentary, and it took me aback, but I've grown accustomed to it, your voice is great with good diction, and despite the speed of narration, easy to follow.
    I was curious about Yonder, but it looked a little twee and flat, your review confirmed some suspicions - thanks.

    I'm all for atmospheric and relaxing games that can make me wind down after a stressful day, without frequent deaths and frustrations, but the complete absence of any kind of fighting system does make this game look pretty... boring. Thanks for the excellent review! I may pick it up on some deep sale.

    • @lwaves
      @lwaves 7 років тому +17

      It's the lack of even basic puzzles that's putting me off. I can live without the combat but without it the game needs something to replace it and basic puzzles would be the obvious choice.

    • @russmawson6744
      @russmawson6744 7 років тому +4

      MrKanjidude I enjoyed it for about 2 hours then started to find it incredibly dull.
      The lack of any sort of combat soon becomes a big issue.
      But as the other person says it's the lack of puzzles that is the worst part.
      I've not gone back to it and I'm struggling for a game to play until uncharted comes out and still haven't felt a need to return to it

    I was assuming this game would be a simple play-through when I bought it but I'm finding that the more I play, the more there are things that surprise me. Lots of detail went into the game and there are some easter eggs to be found as well, plus it's definitely a challenge to find things without looking for answers online if you're motivated to see the game to total completion. Obvs not for everyone but it's definitely not a horrible game, and it's really not a terrible LoZ knockoff ( otherwise every cartoony, open-world adventure game has to be a LoZ knockoff, get real.)

    I really don't see the point of and open world / sandbox type games without dangers or enemies. Since the game don't offer that, I guess the creator of the game, directed the game to an specific gamer type, my guess, the type that like puzzle games or very abstract games that offer a sense of solving something but in a very calm way.

So what games "like this" would you recommend instead of this?

  • @onibeebee

    i have this game, but like i'd say that quests and story needs to be fleshed out a lot more. i like the lack of fighting and stakes, but it does become a bit of a collectathon after a while, and for some people that can be tedious, it was a really good calm game. i dont think if your someone that loves action and a deep story you'll like it particularly, but if you want a gentle game, this is really nice

    I think the biggest flaw of this game is the lack of combat. Sure this isn't what they were going for but it is really important for an open world exploration game unless it's just a farming simulator.

    I think ppl need to realize...including the guy that made this video but they do want kids to play this game too and kids love easy games and parent love easy games that kids dnt have to ask for help with. I think the guy who made this video totally forgot that not every game is meant for an adult at some time its almost comical that he doesn't get that. In my opinion this is a great game for kids!

      I mean do games for kids have to be easy? It can differ.

      Every reviewer can only review from their own perspective. If you get an adult reviewing the game they're going to review it as an adult. And that is quite useful, to other adults who were thinking about playing it regardless of who the target of the game may be. Of course children may have a different perspective but assuming what they would think would just be guessing and assumption if you're not actually part of that group. This is why having reviewers from a variety of different backgrounds is helpful.

      Yeah, I do agree with that. The gameplay mechanics are not quite deep enough when you play as an adult, which leads the game to be a bit repetitive and boring when you're used to more complex systems; but I think that's a perfect introduction to RPGs / crafting games for kids. It's still a well-made, pretty game: it's not because they're kids that they don't deserve quality, but the gameplay is bare enough to be understood by a beginner - and presented simply too.

      Sometimes, as long-time gamers, we tend to forget that many traits of video games (whether it be gameplay concepts, control mechanics, the quest-reward-progression system...) really are not that obvious to someone who has never played. We've acquired reflexes of thought and understanding of theses traits over time, and as many people start playing as kids, we don't remember stumbling over all that; but those are things that need to be learnt! Who has never backed up from a game because the tutorial was several hours long, and you were discouraged from that learning phase (yeah, looking at you Europa Universalis)? I have the feeling that Yonder would be great at teaching some core mechanics, in a very accessible wrapping. It's not that games for kids *have* to be easy, but rather that someone new to video games needs to access it by steps. I mean, that does nothing for the story, that could have gone more in depth anyway, but, that's still something to consider in defense of Yonder's gameplay.

    I also think this looks great, very chill like a low key animal crossing or harvest moon, I don't need more fighting, plenty of games have that, I want more chill games. Can't wait.

    While I prefer puzzles, challenges and enemies to fight in Open World games the graphics/visuals look great. Not dark enough for this Open World gamer but seeing this review I like that it has a good varied Open World. I Dont think that I will buy it though. Great review once again in any case.

    Got it for $15.99 from PSN, which I think was an ok price. Looking for something like a Harvest Moon, just relaxing, farm simulation. Would this do the trick, you think?

      There is a farming element but it isn't as strong as HM, Yonder is more fetch-questing/crafting over farming but it's still a relaxing game with lots to explore.

    lack of voice acting, the world is too big it feel empty, there is no challege (except if you consider collecting sprite as challenge), the story is lacking, the crafting and farming are lacking as well.
    The good point is the sprite are cute, the world is beautiful, the light in object is great, the animal are cute (my favorite is buffalo like animal)

    The whole mentioning of "lack of risk" during this review kind of annoyed me because it seems this game was never meant to have an real risk, I do agree though that their should at least be some puzzles in it or maybe a deeper story or some sort of mini game system.

    at first i was like "oh, man this looks so good."
    then as the video continued and i was watching more of the gameplay, I thought and a bit later you confirmed it "hm. this looks like a walking simulator but without the great narrative like in games like Firewatch for example."
    it's sad actually. looks like this has potential. but without some solid gameplay loop or great story, it's doomed.
    there are tons of great relaxing games, that has no real threat. but they always have something on the side that drives the game forward.
