    "We didn't go teaching to get rich but to enrich others."
    To all teachers,Happy Teachers Day !!!!💕
    Teaching is the most noble profession in the world. It serves as the pillar of our society since it institutes other professions as well. Every 5th day of October, we celebrate World Teachers’ Day-a day where the struggles and hardships of our teachers are appreciated and rewarded.
    Being a teacher will never be easy because teaching will never be their sole task. Even the things that aren’t listed in their job description, but because of their love and passion, they will never dare to scape. There are times when they will get tired, but after a little rest, they will continue to move on and promote the future of their students.

    It's really not easy. I often think when a listener knows what exactly I'm talking about or indicating, I'll use "the" as article. And also sometimes it means a listener would agree with you on something. For example, when your boss asks "did you see the paper on your desk?" He probably means he thinks you've already seen and read it. But if you don't, or if you want to pretend that you've seen it, maybe you could say: "a paper?", rather than "the paper"?
    I'm not sure if my description is clear enough. It's just my thoughts. Thanks for sharing!

    Hi! Thank you! I would like to ask a question about articles.
    I have seen some people say "on the couch" even though it is not clear which couch is referred to.
    For example :
    "I was trying to find Jack in his house and he wasn't there and when I found him, he was sitting on the couch reading a book"
    Here, it is not clear which sofa Jack was sitting on but people do use "the" with "couch" in this way. But, Why so ?
    Many Thanks!

    • @Oxfordonlineenglish1
      @Oxfordonlineenglish1  Рік тому

      Good question. Here, we are assuming that it is the only couch, or the main couch, in the house. Another example is: 'She was sitting on the bed when she heard the news,' or, 'He was in the kitchen when his mother called him.' We use 'the' in these instances where there is only one in the house, and we know which one we're talking about. Hope this is useful for you!

    Why do people often say "I'm going to the cinema" instead of "a cinema" even though they haven't told us which cinema they are going.
    There are many cinemas in their city but they would always use "the" when talking about going to the cinema.

    Why so ?
    Thank you in advance!

    • @Oxfordonlineenglish1
      @Oxfordonlineenglish1  Рік тому

      Hi Omar. Good question. Often times, native speakers will use 'the' because it refers more to the activity rather than the specific location. For example, I could say, 'We're going to the movies later,' which is the same as, 'We're going to the cinema later.' The emphasis is on the activity rather than the location. If the context requires us to refer to a specific location, we would say something like, 'There is a movie theater near my house. Shall we go there?' Hope this helps you!

    How about planets? The Earth?

      Like all things with articles, it's not straightforward :)
      'Earth' can be used as a name, in which case it follows the rules for names: capital 'E' and no 'the'.
      E.g. "There are four rocky planets in the solar system: Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars."
      'Earth' can also be a regular noun, in which case it has a small 'e' and may be used with 'the', because there's only one.
      E.g. "The earth is the third planet from the sun."
      I would bet that most native speakers don't follow this consistently, so I personally wouldn't worry about it too much.
